Help this new mom with a pumping/storage question
I have a bottle of breastmilk that my LO only drank half of. Can I store the remaining in the fridge for a later feeding or do I have to throw it away?
Thanks so much!!

Re: Help this new mom with a pumping/storage question
I asked this once. There were varying responses. Here is what I do. I've actually never been home when DS takes a bottle, but I tell DH if he doesn't finish it right away, allow him to finish it w/in the next two hours, otherwise toss it. Don't know if it's the right thing to do, but I feel comfortable with this.

Re: Help this new mom with a pumping/storage question
Depending on who you ask, the answer is either to throw it out right away or to use it for the very next feeding. The problem is not the milk itself but the backwash - baby's saliva gets in the milk and it is full of bacteria that can multiply. This is why you can never reuse a bottle of formula, but some sources show that it happens more slowly in breast milk.
If we're not sure that DD will take a whole bottle we'll only heat up like 3 oz. We can always give her more right away if she's hungry and this way none goes to waste.

If they drank out of it, I always threw it out. It stinks...try smaller bottles...you can always add more if she wants more

Re: Help this new mom with a pumping/storage question
I would use it at the next feeding but I wouldn't combine it w/ any new milk.

Re: Help this new mom with a pumping/storage question
agree with a lot of the others..I would use it at the next feeding but not after that! I also wouldnt put it back in the fridge (too much heating cooling heating cooling) I also changed the nipple to a fresh clean one..not sure if this does anything..but it made me feel better! HAHA

Re: Help this new mom with a pumping/storage question
i always threw it out. bacteria can develop in the nipple and backwash into the milk. its not worth the risk.
i just gave smaller bottles of breast milk and would continue to add if she was still hungry, instead of giving too much and wasting it.
good luck

Same here. I have always heard/read that it should be used up within an hour, otherwise toss it. I know it hurts, but to me it's not worth the risk.
