Help me settle a debate with DH.......
Does "clean" have a smell to you? For about a year, we've been using a powder based detergent that we order off Amazon (Charlie's Soap) and its fantastic. Only requires a tablespoon a load, better for the machine itself than liquid detergent, and very cost effective. It's gotten rid of stains of all kinds -- grass, grease, food, ink, etc but it has no fragrance/perfume at all. DH recently started commenting that his laundered clothes don't "smell clean". To me, smelling clean means it doesn't emit any odor at all. A lack of any smell is clean. DH thinks I'm crazy and strongly believes that clean is a smell (what smell exactly I have no idea but I'm assuming flowery or like some of those Bath and Bodyworks candles? Fresh cotton? Beach escape?). He doesn't understand my stance on clean being no smell at all. Anyone else agree with me? Or am I really off base here?

Help me settle a debate with DH.......
It took me awhile to get used to the no smell thing for clean. We all have very sensitive skin so I use free and clear for everything and there is no smell. Now I equate smell with dirty. My cousin gives me hand me downs for dd and I rewash everything because the detergent she uses is overpowering.

I think you're right, but I prefer a smell because I'm conditioned to it. My cousin recently told me if your clothes smell like detergent you're using too much - so it's wasteful and not good for your clothes either.

I know what he is saying, but I know what you are saying as well. Sorry I am NO help! LOL
But I wanted to say that if he really likes a scent and you still love that detergent, try these. You throw them iin with your detergent. They make everything smell - well like he wants it to smell.

I think clean smells like laundry detergent. LOL. Like when I smell a piece of clothing, if it smells like detergent, it's clean. Can you just throw in a few dryer sheets to give it a smell for him?

I too use tide unscented and do not care for scented laundry detergent. Ask your DH if he recalls a time when he felt his clothing smelled clean. Is it the scent his mom used when washing his clothing? If yes, ask her what brand she used so you can add in a small amount for the same smell.

I get what both of you are saying. Yes, there are certain scents that smell "clean", but I also use fragrance free detergent because of sensitive skin and I think my clothes "smell" clean because they don't smell at all. Recently though I had to buy a small bottle of scented detergent (ran out and ran to drugstore for some and they only had fragranced detergent) and while I loved scent, it was very strong and overpowering, after using fragrance free for so long. So, I guess I would say either way can be "clean smelling."

Re: Help me settle a debate with DH.......
I've had the same problem with DH and his family. I wash all of our clothes in natural detergent. It took a while to teach DH that chemical smells do not = clean. We let DS sleep over MIL's house and she actually had the nerve to say his clothes smelled "weird" so she rewashed everything from his overnight bag in Tide. I was so mad. DS has very sensitive skin and she knows that. Now when I drop him off I have to say "it doesn't smell like detergent but I swear they are clean" just to avoid her rewashing his stuff.

I am guilty of wanting things to smell clean. I know it doesn't have to smell that way but I like the clean smell. I like when my bathroom smells like bleach and when my kitchen smells like lemon.

I hate clean smells. They're chemicals and fake and not great to breathe in. I use a detergent that smells like nothing yet my clothes still smell nice. They smell fresh and not dirty. I also use essential oils in the house so the house smells nice.

This is me too kind of. I love stronger scents. Like when I wash clothes I don't like that the detergent smell wears off so quickly. That's why I got the unstoppable. At least then the sheets smell like it for a few days instead of half a day.

This is us, too. DH is sensative to smell so I had to stop wearing perfume when we first started dating. Since then, almost everything is scent free. When I get hand me downs, the detergent smell is overpowering for me and I have to wash them to get rid of the smell.

Charlie's Soap isn't real detergent, so in essence, if he is smelling any other kind of odor or "not clean" type of smell it's because the soap is building up in the fibers of the clothes and are not getting clean, like soap scum. The clothes should be stripped and you need a detergent with a real surfectant.
As an aside - yes, I do like my clothes to have a clean fragrance to them.

What do you mean by a real surfactant? I don't use this brand (never heard of it until this post) but I was just looking into trying it.

Pretty much all of the "natural" or "organic" or "homemade" laundry soaps are just combinations of softeners, boosters or soaps. They don't contain any chemical cleaning agents which is what actually cleans the dirt and grime out of clothes. If you strip your clothes after using natural laundry soaps you will be shocked at how the water looks afterwards.

I love this stuff! They actually have Dreft ones that I got for my DD's clothes and I sometimes put it in with my stuff.

I understand what he's saying and I understand what you're saying as well
I like the "clean" smell. I can only use a mix of tide original , oxiclean and April fresh downy on my clothes. It's give a very specific smell. Not over powering, but enough of a scent to feel and smell "clean"
The best scent ever is when I wash the clothes and hang them outside to dry. I love it.
Maybe try adding white vinegar to the wash. It may help with the clean feel even if it has no scent.

Thanks for the info & wow... those pics are gross. I don't use homemade soap but I do prefer natural cleaners. The brand the op mentioned contains: C12-15, Pareth-2 (Vegetable and mineral sourced surfactants) so I was just wondering what you meant by "real". What do they use to strip the clothes? I wanna test my laundry to see what the water looks like after the natural cleaners I've been using lol.

Re: Help me settle a debate with DH.......
Clean to me is a very light. Heavy perfume like scents make me ill. Original Tide and April Fresh Downy are what we use for laundry, Mr. Clean for kitchen and bath. I'm not a huge fan of bleach for cleaning, but will use it on occasion to keep mildew at bay. We don't use scented candles or sprays in the house, I can't stand them. If I need to freshen the air, I boil some lemon and rosemary.
Clean to me is a "fresh" scent, like outdoors on a warm sunny day, fresh cut grass, the air after a rainstorm.
