i did not register for one. i want to make sure i am capable of breastfeeding first. Worst case scenario - i'll rent from the hospital for one month and then get my own....

That's what I was thinking of doing at first too, but a lot of the BTDT mom's were giving me the cost of the rental per month and it almost doesn't seem worth it.

I bought the Medela Pump In Style® Advanced Breastpump in Shoulder Bag 2008

It has a different carrying case...but I thought it worked GREAT.

Ok I registered for this same one

I did just take a breastfeeding class last night and the Nurse was showing us all different ones. She really liked the hand held one I think it was avent made one. If I knew that before I registered I would of gotten this one.

BUT - one thing you can do at the hospital is request a pump for use there (to be sure you CAN pump) and then on the way home, or the next day - get a pump from the store. Many friends of mine have done that - on the way home - they sit in the car and the husband runs in to grab the pump, or something similar.

I will be registering for Medela Pump In Style also...My SIL used this one & really liked it. My insurance will not cover the rental of one, so I figure it is better to just get it.

Re: HELP! I am sooo overwhelmed by the breastpumps!!

It depends on your needs. If you will be working FT & pumping, it's best to have a double electric pump. If you just need something for time away or working only a few hours a week, a single electric or even a hand pump would be sufficient. I had the Avent Isis for my daughter. I used it for when I'd be away & to work PT. It worked perfectly for me. I bought another one for this baby.

Re: HELP! I am sooo overwhelmed by the breastpumps!!

coming from a BTDT

I am exclusively pumping because my daughter has some medical issues and can't go to the breast yet, we are working on it but for now I pump every 3 hours.

GET A HANDS FREE PUMP!!!

I have teh Medela Freestyle, it's pricy but SO WORTH IT so I can be hands free, it helps you not to feel a slave to the pump

I actually didn't buy a pump until 2.5 weeks after she was born, I was using a hand pump for the first 2.5 weeks because I refused to aknowledge that I had to pump Chat Icon AFter my hands fell like they were going to fall off one night and I was about to give in I sent DH out and he came back with teh freestyle and I've been MUCH happier ever since!

THAT is a whole lotta running around for nothing. I would also NEVER trust my DH to buy the right item. Buy a pump, don't open it until you need it, return it if you don't need it.

BTW- many hospitals actually have stores that will sell all BFing supplies (including pumps).

I have the PIS Advanced and love it. I highly recommend it. I've also heard great things about the Medela Frrestyle (which wasn't available when I bought my pump).

Second that. The Avent is useful in a pinch (Like the time I left my pump at WORK Chat Icon ) but I would poke my eyes out than use it all the time.

You ladies are the greatest!!!

Now, what kind of accessories would I need? How many bottles? Bags? etc. etc.

I'm thinking I'll wait to see if I get any gift cards for my shower to put towards one............

I have the Medela Pump in Style-Double Pump. You can either use it to pump one or two sides. I used it with 1st DS, 2nd DS and I will use it with this pregnancy as well. I never had a problem with it and even used it to pump at work.

Re: HELP! I am sooo overwhelmed by the breastpumps!!

It really depends upon what you will use it for. If you are EBF and a SAHM I would get a single handed one to alleviate pressure and help in an emergency. If you are going back to work, then with ouy a doubt, you will need a double pump. I loved my medilla PISA, but since having DS I think they have a newer version out. I have both a single handheld (free from the hospital) and the PISA.

The PISA comes with 4 bottles, I purchased 8 more to start and then every 4 months got 12 more because the plastic (BPA Free) breaks down - same thing with nipples. DS used the bottle until 10 months so I used about 36 bottles for him. I got the 100 pack of the disposable bags to pump in when I bought the bag. I got about 150 more so 250 total. Sometimes I would pump directly into the bottles. It depended upon what I had clean and if I needed to freeze or use. HTH

Can you put the milk in the baggies and then transfer them to regular bottles? Like a Dr. Brown's? Just wondering......

Yes, that is exactly what you do. You use the bags for the freezer and the bottles for fresh. If you put a medilla bottle in the freezer it will break when thawed. This comes from first hand experience.

I have the Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump and I LOVED it!!! It is a double electric pump which was great because in about 15 min. (usually less) I was done pumping. Very easy to use and clean and it's all stored and built into a nice black shoulder bag. I highly recommend it!! Chat Icon

Re: HELP! I am sooo overwhelmed by the breastpumps!!

Everyone is different. For me, based on my confidence, research and advice from peers/relatives (who rarely if ever pumped), I registered for the Medela Harmony hand pump. I will be a stay at home mom with positive plans and anticipation of successful breastfeeding. I wanted to have the small pump on hand to help with engorgement or medical situations. Same with bottles, do not plan to bottle feed formula or breast milk but I'll have one of a few brands small bottles on hand for the just in case moment.

Re: HELP! I am sooo overwhelmed by the breastpumps!!

Honestly I wouldn't buy one until the baby is here and you try to BF for 1-2 weeks first. Renting is expensive if you plan to buy after b.c you pay that money then the cost to buy.

I waiting a week to buy mine to make sure I was comfortable BFing and it was going well. I saved my gift cards to buy it and DH just ran to BBB and picked up the one I told him to (I picked one out before I gave birth).

You will be really tired at the hospital that you probably won't want to pump there unless you plan on exclusively pumping or there is some issue that you need to pump for.

My friend really liked this one too. I registered for this one and figure I will use it right away. If I need a different one, I will get it later.

Re: HELP! I am sooo overwhelmed by the breastpumps!!

I did not register for one.
What is your purpose for it?
Different pumps serve different purposes.
I pumped full time for 1 year for my daughter who got BM only. I can help you figure it out if I understand your needs.

The first few weeks you should have a rental pump. If you have any supply issues you will need a rental pump just to help you get over the supply issues.
