Re: Help! DD is sick for the first time...

Thanks again for everyone's help! I felt like I should know what to do but I had no clue. We gave her motrin last night before bed b/c she had 102.5. She actually slept through the night with not a peep from 8pm - 7:30am! I checked her several times and she didn't feel hot so I left her alone.

I went into work late so I could wait for her to wake up and check her. Her temp was 100 even this morning and she just wanted to be held. DH said she fell asleep on the way to IL's (less than an hour after waking up)... is it normal for them to sleep more often when they are sick or is that not a good sign?

She still has a phlegmy cough and goes crazy putting her hands to her mouth when she coughs b/c she doesn't know how to get it up. We gave her pedialyte this morning instead of milk and she drank it all. Should she have milk at all today?

I do find that my boys tend to sleep more when they are not feeling well especially when a fever is involved. If she is not as phlemy, I would give her watered down milk (that is what I do all the time with DS)

If she is congested, try not to give milk.
If she has a fever, do the tylenol and motrin.
Run the shower hot and sit with her in the steam for a few minutes at a time.
Run a cool midst humidifier.
Aspirate frequently and use the little noses saline drops.
Hope she feels better soonChat Icon

Agreed here

Wanted to add-if she is vomiting, keep her hydrated-water, Pedialyte are both good.

Feel better soon Sienna! Chat Icon

DD#1 never really got sleepy when she was sick except the time she had the stomach virus/really high fever. DD#2 we have noticed gets very sleepy/lethargic when she is sick. Her body is fighting off something so it's perfectly fine for her to be sleepy. I know when I don't feel well all I want to do is close my eyes and go to sleep.

We still give milk when they are sick with a cold or whatever, but maybe not as much. A day or so of cutting down on the milk won't hurt her. Or as a PP said, maybe water it down for her.

Totally normal that she'll sleep more when she's sick. It's her body's reaction to the bug - she needs rest to get rid of it.

If she isn't vomitting and is still keeping stuff down, you could probably give her milk. If she has even one episode of vomitting today I'd skip the milk and just stick with the pedialite if it stays down.

Good luck!! I hope she feels bette soon!!Chat Icon

Its totally normal for them to sleep more. My DD was sick over the Holiday week with a fever for 2 and 1/2 days. 104 was the highest it went..wound up at the hospital. They just told us to do tylenol/motrin alternating every 3 hours. I felt so bad for her..But we let her sleep as much as she wanted. and she loved dring plenty of water. Also at the end she did get the runs..sorry if TMI. I guess that was her body getting rid of the virus. Hope she feels better!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks, we'll do watered down milk later. If she seems sleepy all day would you take her to the ped? Or only if she still had a fever?

It really depends. With DD#2 we knew she wasn't feeling well, didn't have a fever, so we didn't really worry about it. She was still responding to us, still drinking, still eating...she was just very blah.

With DD#1 when she became lethargic it was coupled with a very high fever so we immediately called the ped.

If it will give you peace of mind then give them a call. Chat Icon
