Help! DD is sick for the first time... (update pg 2 - more questions)
MIL just called, she said she feels really hot (is going to try to take her temp, I only had a rectal theremom in the diaper bag), she threw up earlier and sounds phlegmy. She was crying the background.
I called the ped office and the nurse said we can wait til tomorrow to take her in. Is that usually what you guys do? Luckily I guess, i'm new to this so what kinds of things do you do for your DC when they are sick? I forgot to ask the nurse but do I still give her milk tonight?
MIL just gave her tylenol and I will go buy motrin tonight. What is considered a high fever? Nurse said to give motrin over 100.3 but what temp really concerns you?
I feel like i'm going to get no sleep tonight, checking on her every minute in the middle of the night to make sure she's not burning up.

If she is congested, try not to give milk. If she has a fever, do the tylenol and motrin. Run the shower hot and sit with her in the steam for a few minutes at a time. Run a cool midst humidifier. Aspirate frequently and use the little noses saline drops. Hope she feels better soon

all of this, and if she sleeps on one side of the crib, elevate it a bit. when he's congested he always sleeps better elevated!!
I hope she feels better. poor thing.

There is not a lot you can do for throw up-it stinks!
It will pass, but brace yourself it can be so tough.
Over 1 year, I don't get concerned unless the fever hits 102 or 103-but I know that is not high for doctors, they think 103 or 104 is okay, but those numbers scare me.

yes, this is the other thing.
I was freaking out b/c Luce's temp was almost 105, but he was playing!! the doctor said to look at his behavior more than his temp. that babies can withstand a temp that would land any of us in bed for days!!!
just keep an eye on her and it. but let her mood/behavior guide you!

I mostly agree No milk though.. it would make AJ more phlegmy. Vicks Baby Rub for chest & neck For me, no motrin until it was over 101, Fevers help fight the infection. If you lower the temp it may just give the bug longer to live. I'd grab a wet papertowl with lukewarm/cool water and wipe down her face, back and feet. Loose cool clothing, if she's hot to touch and not shivering. If she's shiver in cold sweats I'd cover her but still wipe her face and head, back of neck.
ETA: AJ only 'throws up' when she's phlegmy. So I don't give her milk unless I have to then I 'wash it down' with some water if not I cut the milk with water. But throwing up the phlegm does always help clear her up.

Re: Help! DD is sick for the first time...
I agree with all of the above.
Not to scare you, but do not give her a cold bath to bring her temp down. Drastic changes in body temperture could cause a siezure.
I just reminded DH of this last night. He's home today with DS who is also sick. I told him if DS throws up and he needs to bathe hm, use tepid water, not cold.
(Tip learned from other LIF moms. )

Re: Help! DD is sick for the first time...
If it's a stomach virus there's really nothing to do...just wait it out and keep offering liquids (my doc always says not milk)
If it's a cold then we do a humidifer, vicks baby rub, tylenol, aspirator. I also try to give warm baths and let her sit in there a while to see if it loosens anything up.
DD#1 had the stomach virus last year and her temp was 105.6 but she was acting fine and the ped said to call back if it reached 106. I was shocked. I don't really give motrin all that often, because we haven't dealt with a lot of fevers, but I start to worry when their temp reaches 103/104 or if they have a lower temp but are acting not normal.
Hope she feels better soon

Thanks, i'm bookmarking this. What about the middle of the night? Do you wake to give tylenol/motrin or just check to see if they are hot? I have a feeling she'll be sleeping in our bed tonight...

Another thing... do you always take the temp rectally? It is NOT going to be easy to do!

Re: Help! DD is sick for the first time...
I wouldn't wake her just to give her medicine. Make sure you have a medicine dropper so you can give it to her. (Most infant motrin/tylenol packages come with a dropper, but the children's versions only come with a measuring cup.) Put it towards her cheek, so she doesn't choke on it. I also like to give a chaser of water with it. He doesn't always want the water, but it's nearby just in case.
I know when DS isn't feeling well, I hardly sleep. My eyes pop open and I check the monitor at the slightest sound. I do check in on him through out the night too.
ETA: I've never taken his temp rectally. We have a temporal one that scans his forehead. He's never had a high fever though. Ask your MIL to show you how to take it rectally just so you're more comfortable doing it on your own tonight.

Re: Help! DD is sick for the first time...
DS was sick about 2 wks ago with fever, phelm, throwing up... I was told to use suppositories to lower fever quicker. I also had to do 4 ozs of pedialyte 4 ozs of formula. This was to keep him hydrated and full at the same time.
Good luck and try to get some rest bc you'll need the patience.

Re: Help! DD is sick for the first time...
rectally isn't so bad. you just have to make sure she's clam and relaxed and BE GENTLE.
I always put a bit of petroleum jelly on the tip. It doesn't have to go in very far. have Len with you to keep her soothed and distracted.
I use the ear one as a base after that one. it's usually off by about 6 degrees, so I take temp rectally, then use the ear, figure out roughly how much it's off, and then use the ear one throughuot the night. I don't wake him to give him medicine, usually when he's fever is up again, he'll wake up from discomfort anyway.

Re: Help! DD is sick for the first time...
My DD is only a little over 5 months old, but has already had 2 colds. (stupid daycare!) With the last one, she was very phlegmy, my ped told me that she might spit up or throw up because she doesn't know how to actually cough up the phlegm just yet and it makes her gag.
I don't know if that is still the same with an older child, but it was something that came into my mind when reading this.
Hope she feels better soon!

I got mine at TRU/BRU. Here's the link. It's good, but I think rectally still might be the best. But it's great to check them in the middle of the night or when they only want to be held.

Aw, Jess... I can't believe she hasn't been sick yet! Up to 100.3 is considered low grade. It could be a stomach bug. Also, if she's phlegmy she can throw up simply by swallowing a lot of phlegm. It'll be ok. The first cold/illness is always the worst. For the mom.

Re: Help! DD is sick for the first time...
She's been sleeping since 8pm and I didn't want to put her in the crib!
She had 102.5 right before bed so we gave motrin. She went down easily although she wouldn't drink the pedialyte DH bought and didn't even want it in a bottle. She has a phlegmy cough so I didn't want to give her milk.
We put the humidifier on but forgot to elevate the crib mattress too, do you think that's a big deal?

How congested is she? That's what the elevated mattress would be helpful with. If she's super congested and wakes up, I'd elevate it a bit then (I wouldn't go wake her though).
Fevers ARE scary (I've seen 105 a few times on my oldest!), but the body is doing it's job, which is a good thing! I'd check on her quietly in a little bit, but she'll definitely let you know if she's uncomfortable when the medicine starts to wear off...just be prepared that it usually takes a little bit (with my daughter it seems like about 30 minutes) for the medicine to really kick in and help ease the discomfort, so you may have to snuggle her until it kicks in and she's comfy enough to go back to sleep if she needs another dose in the middle of the night.
Poor baby, hope she's feeling better soon!
ETA: We took DD's temp rectally until she was 2, since she does have a history of running high fevers I wanted the most accurate way. Now we use the temporal one on her.

Re: Help! DD is sick for the first time...
I agree with everything above
I usuaally give Motrin close to 11:00 pm as I could get so the baby will sleep
I do check my sons heads for burning up ---u will be able to tell when she has a fever
for chris i let the fever ride and only medicated him if his behavior was off
BUT carlo is prone to febrile seizures and I need to give meds until the fever comes down
