Having a hemangioma removed
Has anyone dealt with their DC having one? Did it totally go away or did you have to have it surgically removed?
DS has one on his forhead. He's seeing a Ped Dermatologist. He's only 6 months, but I've heard different things... some pple said they had it removed and others said it went away, but b/c it's on his forhead I think it may have to be surgically removed. Just wondering how the procedure went

Re: Having a hemangioma removed
I had one removed from my ankle when was 11. But it came back (don't know if that is normal)
I do know that I saw a vascular surgeon though

Re: Having a hemangioma removed
My oldest DD had one on the outside of her vagina. We left it alone and he went away. If it had caused a probelm we would have had it removed. I have one on my thigh and wont have it removed because its too vascular now. (and its just a vain concern for me to have it removed!)

Re: Having a hemangioma removed
Thanks! Hoping it'll go away on it's own. If not, in about a year we'll start discussing with surgeons what to do b/c they will only remove it after 14 months. Keep going to the Ped Derm just to make sure it's not growing anymore

Re: Having a hemangioma removed
ds has two, one on his leg and one in the "swipe ZOne" on his butt.... we have been seeing a ped derm since he was 2 months old because the one on the butt opened up and then it became infected.. my pediatrician wanted it removed but the derm told me not to... basically he said i can be painful and that most of the hemmangiomas go down... i can tell you that the one on ds's butt at 14 months is barely visible and the one on his leg (which is 4cm long) is pink and no longer raised... i am so glad that i went to the derm....

Re: Having a hemangioma removed
i think i told you this before, but my cousin had one on the forehead right between her eyes that was a little smaller than mason's. it went away before her second birthday and you'd never know it was there! it completely disappeared. she's 29 now and you'd never know. it just went away on its own

Re: Having a hemangioma removed
I started a thread about this a month or so ago--DS has 2, and the general opinion seems to be that they DO usually go away, but it can take to age 10 or so. My ped. did say that the surgery to have it removed is extremely painful.
Here's the thread I started: link

Re: Having a hemangioma removed
DD has one on her head. When she was born it was flat and then started to raise. We saw a ped dermatologist and he told us that it could grow up to a year and then it would slowly shrink on it's own and be gone by the time she is 5.
It stopped growing way before one and now at 11 months, it is starting to fade in color.
We asked about lasering it, but he told us that it would only get rid of the color, not the actual growth and that it would be very painful for her. He also said that it is more of a concern if it is near the eyes/mouth and could interfere with other things like vision and feeding.
HTH!

I have....they have there own blood supply - it is quite strange.
My girlfriend's 1 year DD has a large one in the center of her back and on her eye lid. She is sleeing all sorts of specialists.....dermetology and opthemology. No surgery is recommended....they will slowly get smaller and eventually go away!!

Re: Having a hemangioma removed
From what i was told, btw, they arent actually removed... the current procedure they use involves lasers and it only reduces it.... and while it isnt visible to the naked eye, that is why it can come back

Re: Having a hemangioma removed
Both DDs have one. Neither one has had it removed but I wanted to let you know - The older one's had gotten pretty big. It stopped growing around a year and now at age 2 it is a lot smaller. Have they said it has to be removed?

I was the one who said mine came back and my surgery was not a laser surgery. It was done when I was 11, so it was 18 years ago.
I have a keloid scar now along with it

No they actually can remove them but only a very skilled surgeon can do this safely.
Other option is a laser, but that only takes the redness out of them.
I know b/c we have seen a specialist for my DDs and I have a few friends whose dds had them. All of them went away on their own in time.
