I would definitely recommend flying in the day before! I wouldn't want to chance flying in the same day just in case in the flight is delayed...

We've always flown in the day before.

I also never book my airline tickets through the cruise line, because I've always been able to find better fares than what the cruiselines offer.

ITA! The prices are soooo much higher when you book the airfare through the cruiseline!

Fly the day before. We were lucky and left the day before a cruise and we were glad we did, the plane was delayed for 10 hrs.

I've been on that ship out of Ft Lauderdale. I used to fly out very early the day of (6am flights) but I have learned (we were snowed in one year) to fly in 1-2 days ahead if your schedule allows for it. We usually stay at the hyatt pier 66 - but my family has also stayed in the Renaissance, and several others. We even stayed 2 days post cruise once at the Hard Rock in Hollywood (which was 10 mins from the pier.)

When are you looking to go? I used to find that flying in 1-2 days early was less stressful (no worries about missing the ship) and often a bit less expensive. We usually fly back the day we dock. It is rare we will stay for an extra day - but going home is much easier than getting to the ship. Remember if you miss your flight you have to get yourself to meet up with the ship. Which may or may not be easy to do - esp if you have the 1st day or two at sea - you will miss those days and you might not be able to meet the ship at the 1st shore day. If you can't do that - which many can't try to get the earliest flights out.

We just got a great price from NY to Ft. Lauderdale for a cruise with Southwest.
We are leaving early that same morning.

We are doing an 8am flight, landing in Ft. Lauderdale at 11am. Our cruise does not leave until 4 or 5pm so we should be fine.

For all of you that fly in the day of - remember that Federal regulations require that you be on the ship at least 90 minutes BEFORE scheduled sail away time....

That being said - we take a flight the day before and get a 99 dollar hotel room. Not worth the stress for me to save 100 bucks. Plus, you usually can get a cheaper flight considering you have all day's flights to choose from.

There is also a federal law about this - you just can't goto the next port and hop on the ship. I believe that you need to pay an additional tax, depending upon where you are boarding (foreign/domestic) and where the ship has been prior.

By the time everyone gets off the plane, gets luggage, gets lunch, and a taxi, blah blah blah..... too close for my comfort, but that's just me.

You already paid for that day of the cruise; if you don't use it you're wasting it. Especially if you're going on Oasis; you're already spending double the price of a regular RC Caribbean cruise just to go on Oasis; why not use it for all the days?

6 hours too close? We don't plan to have lunch until we get on the boat and a taxi ride is only a few minutes from the airport to the docks.

We actually spent the same amount (don't remember to the dollar right now) as our last cruise out of NY on NCL and our cruise with RCCL last time would have been the same with 4 people.

I appreciate the advice but I am really not too worried about missing the boat. My girlfriend just did the same thing (different cruise) last week and they had no problems at all.

I've done it every time I have cruised (even in the wintertime) and we haven't had any issues (and they lost my father's luggage once as well - as well as many other people's - and we still made it on time).

It's not 6 hours - that's the thing. You need to be on the ship by 3 for a 5PM departure. That's 4 hours; from the time that the wheels hit the tarmac. ASSUMING that the plane is on time. Plus then there is the time to get off the plane, getting luggage, going to the bathroom, getting a taxi, going to the port with 6,000+ other people, blah blah blah. It's too close for ME, I wouldn't do it. I'd rather not rush and worry about plane lateness, weather, etc. But of course it's your cruise. Chat Icon

Have prices dropped that low on Oasis? Last month I looked and Oasis was 3x more expensive than our upcoming Liberty cruise! Did you use a TA?

Re: has anyone done this cruise? and questions for ppl who have flown+cruised.

Just got back from our Ft. Lauderdale cruise.
We flew down the same day, early morning flight that got us into FLL at 10am.
We were on board the boat by 11:30am.
We booked Delta flights on our own.

For our Alaska cruise that left from Vancouver Canada, we flew in the day before. I'm so glad we did because we were exhausted by the time the plane landed at 11am local time .

Next year's cruise leaves from Puerto Rico, so we will fly down the day before.
We will be booking the airfare with Delta shortly, since we have travel vouchers from the Ft. Lauderdale flight. (we voluntarily got bumped from the return flight).

Bottom line - if you think that weather will be a huge concern, then fly down the day before. If not, then fly the same day on the first flight out, BUT keep handy the schedules of other airlines going to Ft. Lauderdale in the event something should happen to your original flight.

That flight is a painful one.. We took Cathay Pacific, it left NY at 11PM; I don't even remember what time it landed. We couldn't sleep on the plane, it was just TOO uncomfortable! The only people awake were us and the flight attendants. The Vancouver stop was the first stop for the plane, it was continuing off to Hong Kong - I feel bad for the other folks on the plane, they had another 6-8 hours ahead of them flying.

Vancouver is great - so many things to see like the Capilano suspension bridge.

It's about $300 pp for August.

Yeah, even 4 hours doesn't bother me since the boat is about 10 minutes away from the airport. I think my gf said it took 20 minutes which was a long time as she has done it many times and they had 7 people all together.
Dropped? I really don't know. We booked 2 years ago with a TA but booked the last cruise on our own and it cost about the same and NCL was an inside room and much smaller.

Our cruise was the Oasis, there were 9 of us on the flight and another 9 coming in later.
We landed at 10:10, got our luggage and I called the shuttle I had reserved. It was about a 10 minnute drive and we were on Oasis by 11:30.
