Halo Sleepsack Users: WARNING
This was posted on the forum of a local mom's group that I belong to here in NC. It really made me think--thought I'd give you all a heads-up.
Yesterday I put Taylor down for her afternoon nap like always in her Halo sleepsack. I went downstairs only to hear her screaming frantically!! I ran upstairs to find the zipper stuck in her mouth (feet in the air because the zipper is at the bottom). I could not see how or to what the zipper was was stuck to (her lip, tongue?) because it was dark so I lifted her up and either she kicked or the motion set her free. I still didn't know what was going on, except blood was coming from her mouth. I placed a washcloth over her mouth, opened the shutters and went to unzip the sack only to find her tooth stuck in the hole of the zipper pull!!!!!
So needless to say, having a zipper pull with a hole in it down at a baby's feet is not safe. Since babies can put their feet to their mouths so too can the zipper that is located down by their feet. My daughter is now missing her tooth and is without her comfy sleep sack. I have contacted the company and filed a complaint with the consumer product safety commission. I am sharing this so that it doesn't happen to your child.
Taylor is doing well and will have to see a pediatric dentist to deal with the spacing issues this will create for her teeth. Mom, however, is still sick over this and can't erase the image from her mind!

Re: Halo Sleepsack Users: WARNING
OMG Thanks for the warning. I am so sorry for her DC. We actually have some sleep sacks not made by Halo that have the zipper end at the top. I prefer them for just this reason.

Re: Halo Sleepsack Users: WARNING
Thanks for posting this.
I use one but I worry about it b/c my DD tries to YANK the zipper part open. I am afraid she will yank it and the zipper will break, leaving small metal objects in her reach....or in her mouth.
Hmmm what to do now....I am not sure what I want to do.....keep her in it or not.
Thanks again. just something else to obsess over.
That poor little girl to lose a tooth like that.

But a child can still yank it up to get into their mouth, no? What brand also, maybe I need to get these.

That's what I thought, too--the sleepsack is one of the few things I thought I DIDN'T have to worry about.

Re: Halo Sleepsack Users: WARNING
oh my good lord - what will i have to worry about next? Jack still wears it, and will continue to - but that is just scary. He's also at the age where he knows how to unzip it so it's ok. But, I was planning on using them with Tyler.

No, because the zipper is under the flap at their chin. The zipper starts at the bottom. It is in DDs closet and she is asleep. I will look tomorrow and bump the post.

That is horrible!!!!! I have some made by carters that have the zip at the top. DD is in the miracle blanket now, and I was thinking of switching to the carter's sleep sacks soon.

Re: Halo Sleepsack Users: WARNING
The hole on the zipper is so small - it would take a lot for a baby to get tooth stuck in there. I am sure if this was a common problem Halo would recall the sleepsacks and change the design. How horrible for the child it happened to and how scary to think it could happen, but I think the chances are pretty low. There is a chance of something happening with anything, unfortunately.

ita....
the chances of this happening are slim to none. that poor mom was the one though... but really, what are the chances your child's tooth is going to fit exactly into the zipper and then be pulled down? not very likely. i will continue using mine.

Re: Halo Sleepsack Users: WARNING
Target has some really good sleep sacks with arms to keep them warmer, and the zipper remains at the top, under a little flap. That's what we use...

Poor kid -
I never used those sleep sack things - they made me nervous. I don't like the fact that they are competely confined and can't move their own legs/feet if they want/need to
I know it's a 'no no' but I gave Sean a blanket very early in place of those things -

I agree also - definitely something to think about, but I think the likeliness of this happening is so small...

Wow, that is a terribly sad story. Although part of me feels like it was probably more of a freak accident than defective merchandise.

They are not completly confined in a sleep sack and can most definately move their legs and feet.
As I write this, I'm watching my DD on the video monitor (who is SUPPOSED to be napping), walking and crawling all over her crib in her sleep sack.
While it's AWFUL this happened to this baby, it sounds like just a freak thing that happened, which like SweetTooth said, can really happen with just about anything.
I will continue to use the sleep sack as *I* feel it's safer for my DD to use then a regular blanket. But that's my opinion.

I know they're not tied up in there - It just made me uncomfortable - Maybe I was projecting b/c the though to ME being in that thing freaked me out i'm not saying people shouldn't use them, I know it's recommended and *I* did the 'bad' thing by giving him the blanket - *I* was just more comfortable doing that ..........
No matter what, freak accidents just happen (like this one) .......
