Finally a MOM!

Had a weird first appt with my OB...
So I went to my new OB today and it was strange from the moment I walked in. Her receptionist was asking me for labs and paperwork that I "should have brought", but no one told me to bring when I made the appointment. Not such a biggie, but OK....
Then the OB comes and she is kinda short and to the point. My RE said that she "bubbly" like me and that I would love her. Well, then the OB says that her dad died last week and she is not really in a good mood. So, I offered apologies and we continued.
I asked if we could see the baby..."no", when can we see the baby "not til you're 20 weeks". w.t.f? Is that right? I'm 10 weeks now. I told her I thought we'd see the baby between 12-14 weeks. So, she actually asked me "Why would you want to see the baby before that?". w.t.f again. I told her we would want to see it because we're super excited (this being our first pregnancy after a long time of trying) and that I cant wait to find out the sex. She said to me..."I just told a couple today that their baby has no brain, you need to focus on the health of your baby and not the gender". Uhm, ok. Of course the babys health is #1..I kinda felt bad for even mentioning the sex. She made me feel really awkward.
Then we listened for the heartbeat with the doppler. We heard nothing. She then said "If you were only 100 lbs we would hear it, but we wouldn't be able to hear the heartbeat at 10 weeks with you." Meaning what? I'm too fat. Ouch.
It was just a very weird appointment. DH was there the whole time and he doesnt want me to see her again. I am hoping she just had an off day because of her fathers passing. I really trust my RE's judgement, so I think I'll give her another chance...but really....this was sooooo not how I was expecting this appointment to go! I was so excited for it and now I just feel deflated.

I am totally crashing here but this sounds HORRIBLE!! I would find a new OB assap!!!!!! This does not sound like the kind of office you would want to be with from now till 40wk

OMFingG!!!!! that is downright HORRIBLE.
IMO if she cant act professional she shouldn't go to work - especially if you are a doctor and bedside manner is a requirement. i am sorry i would never ever see that dr. again. what if shes in a bad mood the day you need to deliver and she talks to you like that?? i would RUN to another doctor!!

That is awful!! I'm so sorry you had to deal with that!  If it were me, I would honestly find another doctor ASAP. You may be right in that she was having an off day because of her father's passing (I've been there, I had plenty of off days), but how unprofessional can someone be and still be able to use that excuse?? I find it odd that she even shared with you that her father had just died. That, to me (I apologize if this sounds really harsh), says she was looking for sympathy. And even if she was only this rude because of her grief, I would not want to have to see a doctor (especially for a pregnancy- such an exciting time- no less!) who is that emotionally and psychologically un-self aware to be able to keep themselves or check, or realize that they need more time off to grieve.

She doesn't sound like someone who should be practicing medicine-- let along be an OB. Change docs immediately. You do not want that person to be the one answering your crazy questions or being your support in delivery. Also, you should have had a vaginal sonogram at that appt, and then you will have your nucal at 12 weeks.

I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience! I would definitely look for someone else right away and maybe even talk to your RE as someone else suggested. Did she mention an NT Scan? If you want to do one you need a doctor to order it and you would need to schedule it soon.
I'm so sorry she took out her rough day on you. I would not want to work with someone who can't be professionally. I would excuse her not being bubbly but you should never have to feel that uncomfortable.

Go somewhere else!!! No matter what is happening in her personal life she should be able to treat her patients with the respect they deserve or take some time off work! I also think that no sono until 20 weeks is a huge red flag!! I believe in a sono by 8 weeks if not before to make sire everything is as it should be and also no sono around 12 weeks sounds strange since it is part of the NT testing.

OMG! Do not go back to this dr and like pp said tell you RE as well.
I am so sorry you had such a horrible first appt. Not only would I never go back I would also tell that dr that I am sorry for her loss but she should take sometime off until she is ready to be a responsible and profession doctor the is no excuse for how she acted or spoke! Plus she is also wrong about not seeing the baby before 20 weeks! Most have at least 1 sono and/or an ultra screen around 12 weeks

She didn't offer you an ultrascreen? A nuchal transulency sono?

Ummmmmmmm.....that's not just weird....it's horrible. Never go back! Call tomorrow and get a new dr. Even if she was having an off day, she shouldn't have acted that way. Completely unprofessional and unacceptable!

Do not go back. Take it from me I felt like I should switch Drs but I kept sayign to myself nah it'll get better. It never did and I switched at 20wks.
Find a Dr you like now....its a lot easier than later on...Trust your initial reaction.

I know you're trying to give this OB the benefit of the doubt because her father died. However, one thing to keep in mind is what happens if she has another bad day and you're 20 weeks or 25 weeks? It will definitely be harder to change then because you'll have invested half or more of your pregnancy with her. If I were you, regardless of what your RE said, I'd find a new OB asap!

Um, yeah, what a biotch. Call another OB, you're supposed to get a sono at 12 weeks, no???? 
and with the "i saw a couple the other day that had a baby with no brain" - while that sounds completely tragic, she didn't need to share that with you and put stress on you for that because if it were me, I'd be thinking the worse and that's unhealthy! I'm sorry.
Find a new OB ASAP.

I would definitely find a new doctor. While I understand her being upset and not bubbly, the things she said were downright offensive and rude (and by the way wrong). She should have definitely told you about the NT which would happen around 12 weeks. I would tell your RE about it too.
