Gift lists from teachers?

Ok I need some opinions. My DD goes to a Christian preschool 3x a week for 2.5 hrs. She has a head teacher and an assistant teacher, and 17 kids in the class. I have already had a few experiences that make me not like the school, so I'm questioning whether my past feelings are clouding my judgement.

I just got an email telling me the gifts the teachers would like to receive for Christmas presents. Expensive restaurants, specific lotions and bath products that are designer and places like pier one and michaels. It also says in addition to gifts for them, they need additional things for the classroom.

Is this normal? We just moved so it is our first year here, my son has gone to preschool years prior and they have never expected gifts. We always give gifts, and usually give a gift card as well as something handmade by the kids with a nice card. This email now makes me want to not give anything.. Am I wrong?

Gift lists from teachers?

As a teacher, I wouldn't even dream of doing this. I have never heard of any of my colleagues doing this. This is extremely tacky IMO. You are not wrong.

Re: Gift lists from teachers?

Thank you guys! Glad I wasn't losing my mind lol. Counting down the days till this year is over, because all the other part time prek are full and she actually does have fun when she's there. I just won't be sending my youngest DD when it's time for her to go to school. Thanks again!

Tacky. Holy cow. Might be one of the more tacky things I've ever heard of related to holiday gift giving.

Gift lists from teachers?

That is rediculous. I would email the principal/director to address it and attach a copy of the list- Is it possible the teacher initiated this and it is not a reflection of the school as a whole?

Re: Gift lists from teachers?

Not normal and incredibly tacky. I would inquire with the school administration to see if this is standard.

Re: Gift lists from teachers?

I am a teacher and never expect anything from my students. I would rather they make me a card and their parents buy them an extra gift. That is very tacky and I would definitely not buy something from the list.

Gift lists from teachers?

Did the director know about this?? That is terrible. I am very generous to my boys' daycare teachers but if I got a letter like that, they would get nothing.

That is definitely not the norm. I guess I could see patents asking the teachers and making a list of teachers favorite places (like target, or home goods, l&t) in case someone wanted to do something specific. But I think it is definitely not the norm and I think strange to list expensive places or things. I agree with maybe finding a new school.

I do think it is nice if they gave a list of things the classroom needs. Some parents might want to give back to the school,so that could be helpful.

Re: Gift lists from teachers?

This actually came from the director of the school, she basically asked certain questions and the teachers answered. I don't mind the assistant as much because she wrote normal things and not soo detailed, but the head teacher got so specific it was ridiculous.

After talking to DH, we will be making a nice card from DD and buying the items she stated she wants for the class. I don't feel comfortable giving nothing because I don't want my DD feeling left out, but this greedy behavior will not be rewarded by us.

This is appalling. What tacky, disgusting behavior. I sure as hell wouldn't be buying anything off their "wish list." I'd probably give her a frame with a handmade picture in it from my DC or an ornament DC decorated or made. Something she should or would appreciate if she wasn't a greedy person. I'm oppositional though.

Gift lists from teachers?

I would take whatever money you were planning on spending and send it to a charity and give them a card saying a donation has been made in your name...maybe those teachers will get the hint it's better to give then receive.

Re: Gift lists from teachers?

Our kids prob go to the same school
Last year I was half appalled half jealous. I'm a teacher too and would never have the ballz to deck my hallway with my wish list items. There's no easy way to say "please don't buy me a bra" or "thank you but is this an actual crack pipe?" Yes this has happened to teacher friends lol

On the one hand I think it's a little obnoxious. On the other hand I guess they figure if you're gonna spend $5 it's prob better to mention a specific coffee place than to have people wrack their brains

I can only imagine (or hope, anyway) that they don't expect to receive something more expensive, like a perfume ,unless several people pool money together

Either way, people should give what they feel. It's not an answer to everyone's prayers, it's a token gift for the holidays. Crack pipe, it is lol
