I would take whatever money you were planning on spending and send it to a charity and give them a card saying a donation has been made in your name...maybe those teachers will get the hint it's better to give then receive.
I did this the last two years and all DD's teachers really appreciated it. I donated to Sandy Hook Promise. This year there's a class gift but if the budget allows I'll make another donation.
