Friday Night Debate Topic...
Figured I could keep everyone from being bored on a Friday night...
Just dropped DH off at the airport. He called me and told me that he was sitting at the gate and an announcement was made for another flight - saying that there was a young child on the flight that had a severe peanut allergy and that they hoped people would refrain from being peanuts on the plane.
What do you think of this? Should a whole plane of people be possibly inconvenienced due to one passenger? What about the other young children on the plane whose parents may have packed them PB +J sandwiches to eat on board? What about people who are on diets like Atkins or something like that - I used to bring peanuts with me on board because I knew there wouldn't be no-carb snacks I could eat on the plane?
What about people who ate something with peanuts in the terminal and are now sitting next to this passenger? The family wouldn't know that anyway...
Do you feel that if someone is so deathly allergic, that maybe air travel is not the safest or smartest choice?
Interested in your thoughts...

Personally I think that it is unfair to think that if you have a peanut allergy you shouldn't fly. That being said, perhaps if you do have a pb j sandwich or something of the sort, you sit and eat it in another section of the plane for a few minutes. In addition, I would hope that the parent of the severly allergic child would have an epipen ready and available. It was just a suggestion on the airlines behalf but I would hate to think someone would knowingly then eat something that could possibly harm someone else!

I think that it's ok to comply with this, and it's good they made the announcement. the poor kid can't help his allergy situation it's got to be hell for the parents too...
DH and I always pack PB&J's when we travel, but don't always eat them b/c we bring other snacks too.

Re: Friday Night Debate Topic...
Depends.
I would sure hope this kid is DEATHLY allergic of peanuts for the parents to go through this kind of trouble.
If it's something that's very rarely done or announced, I guess I wouldn't have an issue with it.
But if I am a frequent flyer and I am hearing these announcements every third or fourth flight then it would start to bother me.

Does anyone ever wonder why when we were younger hardly anyone was allergic to anything? I think I knew one lactose intolerant person growing up.
But to answer the OP, I'm sure the airlines are trying to minimize their liability in making the announcement, but it would suck if you had packed only peanut products to eat on the plane.

interesting point and I agree. the worst I saw when I was a kid were other kids using an inhaler for asthma.

We were on a Southwest flight where they announced that there was someone on the plane with a peanut allergy so they were serving pretzels instead.
I don't mind it....
I know Bella's school is very vigilant about that as well. One little girl has an allergy. They have a list of snacks/food that we aren't allowed to use and if we have birthdays, we have a list of approved group stuff.
I know if I was in that position, I would definitely want people to abide and care about it.

apparently vaccines and cleanliness against germs have worked against us in this way...my ped told me that many children aren't exposed to many common types of germs and bacterias, so the body develops natural antibodies against sometimes common things...it makes sense.

my DH ALWAYS says that! he says if you wash your hands too much or aren't exposed to viruses and germs, your body won't be able to flight them naturally and build immunity towards them. that's the reason he won't take antibiotics (and never has).

i think it's wrong to think that people with allergies should change their lifestyle (by not flying) to be accomodating. i'm sure people on the flight can go like 3 hours without a peanut so a kid can breathe....JMO

This is part of the reason, but the biggest reason is that in the US peanut oil is used in the manufacture so many products that people are being exposed to much larger does of peanut at younger ages than when we were kids. My son's allergist told me that in the US peanut allergies are reaching epidemic proportions and researchers are working on developing a vaccine for them. Within the next 10 years peanut allergies will no longer be an issue in the US. Israel is facing the same problem with sesame allergies due to their high use of sesame oil in food production. Many people don't realize how much peanut product is in their food b/c US food labeling laws have big loopholes and allow manufacturers to use other names for it to hide it. My ds is severely allergic to dairy, there are about 20 different ingredients I have to look for on a food label to make sure he isn't exposed.
Obviously, since I have a kid with a food allergy I'm sympathetic to the parents and would hope that adults could control their urge for a PB&J sandwich or a bag of peanuts for a few hours in order to keep a child safe. But I can also understand why people would be annoyed. There are a few airlines that have peanut free flights, but maybe the parents were not aware of that or they weren't going to the destination they need.

Re: Friday Night Debate Topic...
First of all, I doubt they would let you through security these days with a PB and J sandwich, so thats a moot point. Too gel like.
I think that it is a very short time for people to be inconvenienced. There are plenty of alternative snacks that people can have.

Me too!
Plus I doubt you could bring a PB&J into an airport let alone a plane.

I don't see a problem with keeping peanuts off of a flight so a child doesn't have an allergic reaction - especially since that reaction can result in death! I love a good PB&J sandwich....but I can go without for a few hours!

Re: Friday Night Debate Topic...
Honestly, while it may be an inconvenience to some, it's literally a life and death situation for this child. Should he not be able to fly because of it? No, IMO. Other kids might be cranky if they don't get their PB&J, and Atkins or low-carb folks might have to eat some extra carbohydrates if they get hungry, but they'll be alive at the end of the flight.
Yes, it is inconvenient, but to be so concerned about yourself over the health and safety over a child who has no choice in the matter is a little insensitive.
Don't mean to offend anyone, it's just my honest opinion.

Re: Friday Night Debate Topic...
We all live in a society where we value life. We have to weigh our sacrafices (in this case not eating peanuts) with not risking a child's life. We sometimes need to inconvenience ourselves for someone else's safety. To ask someone never to fly, I think it a little absurd.

i have to agree with this.
ets: let's say they did not say anything... you are the person by this child and watch him suffer because of this reaction he has... how would you feel then to find out it was because of you and the peanuts you where eating.

Re: Friday Night Debate Topic...
I wouldn't think twice about refraining from eating anything peanut related. All I can think about is that poor kid and his parents. Boarding a plane is so scary, that must really stink for them.
And think about how germs get recycled through the air in a plane, one person in ANY section on the plane and that kid could die!
I don't think its right for anyone to think of it as an inconvenience!! I think that is extremely rude. Its not as if the child could help it. Like another posters said I hope the parents have an epi-pen ready in case.

Re: Friday Night Debate Topic...
I understand that it can be a life or death situation for the child with the allergy, but it can more than just an "inconvenience" for other people.
Other people have dietary needs too, and may bring the food they need. If that happens to include peanuts, they have every right to eat it on the plane, especially if this announcement is made as they are boarding & there is another other alternative for them to buy that fit their needs. In the small airport I fly out of, there aren't any places to buy food at all, after you go through security.
How dangerous is it for someone to be eating something like peanut butter, near an allergic person? I understand actual peanuts have can create dust & that can recirculate in the airplane air, but unless you are in the same row & can touch them, can peanut butter be as dangerous?

Yes sitting near someone eating peanuts or even in the same room sometimes can cause a severe reaction in some people, it is a very serious allergy and can be a life or death situation.
I don't think its such a big deal to refrain from eating something for one flight, we as the other passengers have lots of other choices to eat even if we are on diets and such, unfortunately they do not have a choice in being allergic,
Also can you bring food from home on a plane? I never have only what i bought in the terminal, so i really don't know and am curious

I had a student once who had such a severe peanut allergy that being in a room where peanuts had been could cause a reaction, and possibly death. None of the students or teachers using any of this student's rooms were allowed to have peanuts in the room. It can be really scary!

For the people who are the most severely allergic to peanuts, being exposed on a plane can be deadly. There are kids that are so allergic that if they go on a playground toy after a child who had peanuts at lunch and didn't wash their hands did they go into anaphalyptic shock. Epi-pens only work for about 30 minutes, if you don't get the child to an emergency room in that time they can stop breathing.
If *my* child were that allergic to peanuts I wouldn't be flying for fear of what happens when people don't want to refrain, but that's just me.
