Formula Fed Babies. QUESTION

My son is two weeks old today. He is on formula, we changed from enfamil to similac sensitive. He is still really miserable after a bottle. takes a while to get a burp out and he isn't having many bowel movements.
He also only sleeps two -three hours. he is only taking 2 1/2-3 oz at each feeding.

Does all this sound normal at his age? We have a dr appt tomorrow.
TIA

The amount sounds normal to me - DS was a big eater and was eating about 3-4 oz every 3 hours at 2 weeks.

If he is extremely cranky after a bottle, you might want to have him tested for milk protein allergy if it doesn't seem like it's just gas. Have you tried to give him mylicon?

My son didn't have many bowel movements per day either. Some kids do, some don't - you have to learn what is "normal" for your baby - that is the hardest thing in the beginning!!!

at that age the amount of formula sounds about right. DC should be pooping pretty much after each feeding. I would try some gas drops or gripe water to help things along. The sleep sounds about right too.

Ah, my kids were the same way. It's like New Year's Eve when we get a poop out of them as newborns - lots of hooting and hollering and general merriment Chat Icon Chat Icon

Was he having more bowel movements prior to switching to Sensitive? My younger son gets a 'cocktail' - Similac Advanced mixed with Similac Sensitive - because he was having a lot of trouble with the full Advanced but when we switched him over to Sensitive (which my older son was on) he had no BM's at all.

The way my ped put it is some people can tolerate the amount of lactose in the milk in their coffee but can't go so far as to have an ice cream cone. Apparently with the Advanced, we had hit his ice cream cone. But he does need some lactose in order to have BM's (whereas my older son was fine with the lactose-free Sensitive).

If he is uncomfortable now that he's not having regular BMs I would try the combo. We had to play with the amounts to get to the right place, and as he grows it gets adjusted every so often.

Yes he was def poopinig more on the enfamil before we switched. Also..I thought formula fed babies slept a lot longer than 3 hours at a time!!Chat Icon

Also the mylicon didnt seem to work. Once he gets the burp out he seems ok but it takes SOOO LONG and it seems worse at night. now with the one or two bowel movements a day he seems to be straining to get it out!!
thanks ladies

Mason was the same way. He was on 2 to 3 oz every three hours at that age. He also had issues with his stomach so we were giving him milycon b4 each feeding. At around 2 - 3 months he was fine and didn't need the milycon anymore.

My Ped said to wait it out b/c he wasn't too bad and he wasn't spitting up enough for any concerns. She said it takes a while for babies digestive system to get strong so not to switch formulas right away unless there really is a reason for it. Talk to your Ped about it.

ETA... I remember when he did pooped he was miserable. It was every other day and he would cry and look like he's working so hard to get it out. i felt so bad. Now... at 6 mons he's on the same formula and he's totally fine pooping. I don't even know when he does it now. He'll go and then I'll smell it where b4 he'd be crying a little when he was going and making that "face" like he was pushing out a kid,

yeah Im hoping he grows out of it.. but 2-3 months sounds like a lifetime!! LOL

John,, too isn't spitting up enough for the ped to be concerned about reflux or anything like that. I can count on my hand how many times he spit up since being born. I guess that's a good sign. Yeah Im going to avoid changing the formula again. I think its too much of a shock to there little systems this soon. I may be waiting too long to give they mylicon. I gave it to him after he started fussing after half the bottle. I'll try it before a feeding and see if that makes a difference.

When did your Ds start sleeping longer than 2-3 hours..if he has?

Then I would definitely start with half and half to see how that goes and adjust accordingly.

I just realized he's only 2 weeks old. Honestly, FF or BF - they don't sleep much at that age. He'll grow out of this - his little body is still adjusting Chat Icon

Re: Formula Fed Babies. QUESTION

My two week old wakes for a bottle about every 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on the time of day. He eats 3.5 ounces at a shot and we will probably up him to 4 ounces over the next few days, because he is still hungry afterwards. Maybe your son is hungry and that's why he is waking up sooner. Will he take more than 2.5 ounces or does he just not seem to want more?

And my son only has 1 to 2 bowel movements a day. The doctor said that is normal for formula fed babies of their age.

FYI, I think I read somewhere that you have to give Mylicon before the feeding in order for it to be effective. Hope that helps.

Hey Linda

travis is a month and we cant get him to sleep more then 3 1/2 hours maybe 4 if we are lucky. He currently eats 3 to 4 oz about every 3-4 hours.

When Travis was on plain enfamil he pooped a ton, then we switched to gentleease and noticed somewhat of a difference, but where still having some problems. Then on saturday we where switched to soy and we are seeing a difference. Burps are easier to get out, and he is not as fussy

Really? I heard gentlease is great!!! What were travis' issues? I just hate to keep switching him you know.. that can't be so good on their tummy's either!Chat Icon I just hate seeing him in pain.

Oh btw..the last feeding I gave him the mylicon before and same result. He won't take more than the 2 1/2-3 oz per bottle. He gets to fussy and falls asleep even when I try to wake him he'll suck for a few secs and scream again. Burps are hard to get up too. (to answer some of the pp) Chat Icon

Re: Formula Fed Babies. QUESTION

Sounds like my baby who's 2 months now. My little guy is/was impossibe to burp. And he was fussy and crying after a feeding. Honestly, feeding continues to be the most stressful baby activity for me.

I just switched to Dr. Brown's (we had Avent before) and my son can now burp! Sometimes the burp comes out in 1 minute whereas before we could pat/pound his back for 10 minutes and nothing! With these bottles he now burps between 85-90& of the time.

As for bowel movements, that's a never ending struggle also. It could very well be the formula. Joshua could not tolerate Similac Advanced after 2 weeks - he was gassy and couldn't poop. On Enfamil Gentelease he started spitting up horribly. Now he's on Similac Alimentum (no milk allergy though but GI put him on it) and the spitting up is almost gone BUT its hard for him to poop sometimes. He strains and strains and when we stimulate him, his poop is soft so I'm not sure why he can't go. We too celebrate each bowel movement. We got 2 on Saturday which never happens and we were beyond happy. Prune juice made him gassy and fussy and so we put dark Karo syrup in 2 bottles a day (only 1 tsp). Not happy about that.

Formulas are all about trial and error. And 2-3 hours is absolutely normal, it will get better.

What bottle are you using??

Try the drops right before he eats. This is what my doctor told me to do, and put it directly in his mouth rather than in the formula.

As for the BM...I spoke to 3 doctors and was speaking to my obgyn yesterday about this. Babies do not have to poop everyday. I freak when my DD doesn't go every day, but it is not uncommon.

Re: Formula Fed Babies. QUESTION

I have my 3 week old on similac neosure and when we switched her from similac advance she didn't poop for a few days and seemed kind of miserable. When I asked the doc she said keep her on it, it will get better. It did. It took about 4 days and she has been fine.

edited to add:
She still only takes 2-2.5oz at a time.
