Estimated Weight by Sonogram

How accurate is this, really??? Chat Icon

I'm watching Deliver Me on Discovery Health and throughout this girl's entire pregnancy, they kept tellng her how big her baby was. They ended up inducing her at 39 weeks which was unsuccessful and ended in a C-section. Her baby girl was born at only 6lbs 13oz! How could they be so far off?! I would actually be super annoyed if that were me...

I have no idea. With my last sono at the end of my pregnancy showed my baby at 8.5 lbs. Two days later I had a c section with 10lb 6oz baby coming out!

I think the farther along you are, the more the margin of error can be bc it's so hard to get accurate measurements bc the baby is so big.

Besided the 2 pp I have never heard of them saying the baby was smaller then it actually was :O I always hear how the baby is so big and then once its born they are usually way off. None of them are really accuarte its impossible to be!

They're off more than they're right. They induced me because they thought I was going to have a 10 lb+ baby, DS was 8.11. Still on the above average side, but nothing ridiculous. This time around I don't even ask what the weight is, or care. Baby will be what baby will be.

Re: Estimated Weight by Sonogram

I was pretty annoyed when DD was born. Throughout the pregnancy, the sonogram tech told us that by the time I deliver DD would be around 8lbs... NOpe ! I had her at 37wks and she weighted 6lbs 8oz. So I guess, it's not that accurate !

It can be off but I think it has alot to do with the dr/tech doing it and mostly what machine they are using...ie the better the sono machine the more accurate. but I think my high risk said it could be 10% either way

Re: Estimated Weight by Sonogram

honestly, i think the biggest factor that skews weight estimates is head size...

they measure the babies belly, femur and head and get an estimated weight. if your child has a large (or small) femur, belly or head, the estimation will be skewed...

BUT, mine was right on. at 40w1d, they estimated DS to be 8.5 lbs. He was born the next day at 8.7 lbs and his head is average Chat Icon

Very true...

They estimated my LO at 7.5lbs at last week's appointment, so I'm guessing he will be approx 8lbs today. I'm curious to see how big he will really be!!! Chat Icon

Yeah. They gain approximately 1/2 a lb a week, so they would have been right on for you!
