Ear Wax?
so em & i were playing with her mickey doctor kit...and she has a little light thing.... i showed her you can shine it in the ears and see...etc.
well, i do this and she has a TON of ear wax in one ear - like i can't see past it - it looks like a 'bubble' of ear wax...and the other ear just has some - but not terrible.
can i do anything??? she is just getting over a bad ear infection in both ears....

Re: Ear Wax?
Try to clean as much of it as you can. It can relieve some pressure. They make a bulb syringe for ears. Maybe try that. My DS had a really bad earwax problem in one ear for months...I had to clean it 2-3 times a day. They make q-tips for babies...

Same here. My sons get this from DH -- I have to swab their ears every night, otherwise it builds up and they pull on their ears. Ew.

You only put the tip of the syringe in the ear. You don't insert it all the way. It is like how you would use a q-tip..I had the Dr clean DS's ears one day and he screamed for 45 minutes after wards. It was very traumatic for him. I said never again unless it is medically necessary.

i may give this a try - the one ear is the one she's been sticking her finger in lately - which made me think the ear infection was still here (and her follow up isn't until next monday)...
eta: thank you!!!!

Re: Ear Wax?
My ped suggested Debrox (over the counter drops). Put one drop in each ear with extra wax one time per day.

Re: Ear Wax?
How often do you clean her ears? That seems like a lot of wax build up if you can't see past it. Is it all the way in the ear or visible?
Clean her ears with a wash cloth and warm water.

i have never cleaned her ears - she's never had any issue whatsoever....when we bathe her - we're careful to not 'aim' the showerhead at her ears...
this is her first ear infection - so i'm wondering if it's because of that...and one of them was 'really bad' according to the doc...

I have to clean the boys ears daily.
Yes infections can make it worse but it should be done on a normal basis and maybe it wouldnt of been so bad, the buildup.

I would take her to the PED immediately and have it removed. She probably has issues hearing out of that ear due to all that waz build up. For you to not be able to see past the ear wax seems quite excessive. You should be cleaning the outer area of her ears with a washcloth and warm water on a normal basis. Some wax in the ear is necessary.,.but not the amount you are describing.

Never? Really? Can she hear you guys? Some wax is good or normal, that much is not. Some water is good in their ears. I do ds with a warm washcloth with soap and clean with a qtip like 4 times a week.

Re: Ear Wax?
You might need to have the Ped clean them out if they are that blocked up.
I clean DS' ears every night. A little warm water and q-tip, just at the outside of canal.

Re: Ear Wax?
inside of her ears? no - we've never ever cleaned inside her ears - behind them - yes - even her ears themselves - yes....but inside??
i always thought it was better to not do anything rather than do it and mess them up.
i'm also very sensitive to things going in ears - as i punctured dave's eardrum once when we were joking around...that was HORRIBLE.
she hears 100% fine - i just whispered with the TV on and she heard me....
i did use baby q-tips (we actually had some) for her last diaper change (in hear ears - not her booty) and she found it funny and giggled....
eta: please keep in mind - we see the ped. when we're supposed to (and had just seen him at 18 months) and he ALWAYS looks in her ears and has never seen a problem.

Re: Ear Wax?
My ped says leave it or if you MUST only clean the outer ear area. Do not go in or near the canal. So that's what i do no matter how much wax I see.

Ditto.
The way my ped talks about q-tips is in a tone usually reserved for weapons of mass destruction.

Yeah, I was under the impression using q-tips was not a great idea as you could push the wax in. SIL is an audiologist and she said we shouldn't use q-tips in our own ears and definately not on a baby.

my dr said same but to dip qtip in peroxide it will help breakup the wax. so a little could drip in ear. I just had my ear irrigated and they used peroxide too

My ped whom I trust with the highest regard told me not to trust the baby ones, you still have to be careful. And she doesn't really want anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.

Re: Ear Wax?
FYI: DD#1(10) has ear wax issues. Her Ped said that some people produce A LOT of ear wax and it tends to be hereditary(I do too) She is Clean, very clean, she just produces it. NEVER put a q-tip in the ear of a kid that has that much wax. It will push it in. We have to put Debrox drops in her ears on a regular basis and flush her ears out with warm water and a bulb syringe about every 2 weeks. In 2 weeks time, I can not see past the wax some of the time. There have been times that the Dr has to use a power ear flusher thingy and a tool to grab it out. It is not always about being dirty

Re: Ear Wax?
Jess, Ask your ped what he recommends. I am sure if he thought it was a problem he would have mentioned it.
My DD also gets a lot of wax too. I was told NO q tips, I will admit that at times I use- but I am very careful them not to push in but to sort of clean the external part (but I am very careful.) My dr is against Qtips so you need to check first.

These are what I use. You can't go into the ear canal with these. They work really well...
