Re: Ear Wax?
I've clean DD ears every night in the bath with a washcloth and after bath with a baby q-tip, since she was a newborn. I spoke with the PED about this months back b/c I saw a post on here about q-tips and babies. He said as long as you are not stucking it into the eardrum it is fine.
I would bring her to the PED and have him remove it. I would not suction it out yourself.

My ped says leave it or if you MUST only clean the outer ear area. Do not go in or near the canal. So that's what i do no matter how much wax I see.
Ditto.
The way my ped talks about q-tips is in a tone usually reserved for weapons of mass destruction.
I was told never to clean the inside of my ear with q-tips. I have wax build up and they say it lead to ear infections. I went to an ENT.

Re: Ear Wax?
only clean the outside of DC 's ear with wet cloth and IF you really have to (like if you see wax coming out) use the baby Qtips *picture was posted of * but don't go deep, just clean the outside of the canal. We -adults and babies-need wax to protect from dirt, dust.... and from infections, plus when you go too deep inside the canal you just push wax deeper. I have known this from few different ENTs for years now (my sister has ear problems, she even had surgery and I used to get frequent infections as a kid) and then I was watching DR. Oz show the other day and he said the same thing ...

Did he ENT tell you he cleans the wax better than you do? They say nonesense like that sometimes to get you to make more visits to them.
Wax actually protects from a lot of types of ear infections. A build up should be cleaned because it affects hearing.

What she said. I've had loads of ear infections over the years, and also needed surgery on one ear, seen quite a few ENTs, and each one told me do not use q-tips ever. You either pack the wax further in which can cause problems, or you can scrape the outside of your ear, causing further ear infections. And truth be told, my ear infections have reduced SIGNIFICANTLY ever since I gave up q-tips. I use a washcloth now, that's it. So my advice is to not use q-tips, even the baby variety at all.
If the wax is that built up, I would bring DC to the ped. to have it removed. Or try Debrox for a couple days first, but I'd be careful about putting water in if DC just had an ear infection. You want to keep the ear very dry.

Re: Ear Wax?
We just use the baby q-tips when we can see the extra wax. other than that we clean then once every 2 weeks or once a month. as our ped says the wax i there to protect the ears you have to leave some in there and cleaning them tooo much can lead to excess wax production.

Re: Ear Wax?
Does she have ear tubes? Liam does and when he has an infection the fluid runs out of the ears. So we are supposed to wet a q tip and just clean the wax out without sticking it in the canal.
ETA: I agree. I am an SLP and we had to take quite a few hearing classes in school and we were always told "nothing smaller than your elbow goes in your ear".

Re: Ear Wax?
I have been using qtips all my life...Been using the baby ones on DS since he was a newborn. He has never had an ear infection and I never had one until I was 26 (started to work in a nursery school at that time.) If you use the the right way, there is no need to worry....I clean the inner part of his ear. The wax comes out that far. I don't go into the ear canal..You can't with the baby ones...

Re: Ear Wax?
There are ear drops that you can get at CVS and put them in her ear. It breaks up the ear wax. I wouldn't put anything in her ears...it can push the wax further back. Ask the Pharmacist. I would tell you what I bought but I can't remember and I'm not at home.
