driving age: spinoff to teen car accident death
As a kid, I couldn't wait to get my permit and at the time I would have told you how mature and ready to drive I was. 6 months later, i totalled my car around a curve and almost died. Now, as an adult, I think it's INSANE to have kids driving cars at 16-years-old. You can't have a wine cooler until you're 21, but you can operate heavy machinery which could potentially kill you or other people... it just doesn't make any sense....driving a car requires good judgment and planning, etc. To give children all that responsibility at such a young age isn't right, IMO.

Re: driving age: spinoff to teen car accident death
I know there are jerkoffs at all age, but I do feel like kids tend to be reckless, especially new drivers. I personally think I am a better driver now than I was 10 years ago. However, I also feel that as people get older they should be retested. Reflexes are just not the same.

Re: driving age: spinoff to teen car accident death
It's funny, I was one of the few kids who was not looking forward to getting my DL at all. I waited and waited to get my permit - months past when I could have gotten it. I almost waited until I was old enough to actually have the DL to get my permit. I was NOT looking forward to it at all, for some reason. I know - I'm crazy.
That being said, I don't think I was old enough or experienced enough at all - It took me years to feel comfortable and feel in control. Luckily, I have never had an accident - well, I was rear ended once while SITTING STILL AT A LIGHT lol lol so yeah but other than that - nothing. I was careful but I did like to drive fast, I've slowed a lot in my old age.

Re: driving age: spinoff to teen car accident death
Not for nothing...there are 18 and 19 years olds joining the military, fighting for our country, coming home in body bags. Meanwhile, these same kids can't have a beer until they are 21
Yes, 16 and 17 is young...but at 16 you shouldn't just be handed the keys to a car to drive wherever, whenever. Part of the responsibility needs to fall on the parents...making sure they are taught how to drive, know the rules of the road, are responsible enough, knowing where they are going, when they are going, etc.

ok...so let's increase the driving age to 18 or 19 then... 16-year-olds are babies, no amount of parenting is going to change that... i didn't wrap my tree around a pole at 16 because of my parents

Re: driving age: spinoff to teen car accident death
My family was just talking about this over the weekend, since my cousin's daughter is turning 16 in a few months. It made us think of all of the stupid things we did when we were younger and how lucky we were. I really do think that "kids" are reckless, feeling they are invincible. If it were up to me they would have to have more training - longer driver's ed or waiting longer to get their license. It is just so sad how many young people are killed in accidents.

Re: driving age: spinoff to teen car accident death
I got my license at age 17 and that was after pleading with my aunt to let me get it and she sent in a long one page letter with my application with why the driving age should be 18 and not 16. 6 months later my car went head first into a tree after underestimating a curve, broke my arm so badly the surgeon said it was one of the worst breaks he had seen, now i have a plate, screws and a long scar on my forearm. Now they have a period of 6 months where the newly license driver cannot drive with anyone but immediate family. Personally, i think the driving age should be raised until teenagers are more mature. Not that 18 is mature but it's a little better than 16.

I agree with this - make the classes longer, more pratice time on the roads, licenses should be more retricted for newer drivers (of all ages). I think the only way you really get good at driving is by driving but there needs to be a safer way to do this then had the keys of a car over to someone that doesn't really have the experience to get on the road by themselves - especially in a densely populated area like LI/NYC.

Some adults aren't responsible enough to drive a car.
I think there should be a maturity test along with a driving test.

At 16, you are only given a permit and I believe you are not supposed to drive alone...you are supposed to have a parent or licensed driver with you at all times.
At 17, you are given a jr. license which is used to drive to and from work and school and I believe they are supposed to be within a certain distance of your house (maybe the rules have changed, not 100% sure).
I think that parents need to be a little more strict with kids and where they are driving and when. In most households, both parents work, sometimes long hours and are not able to drive their kids around so I think parents give their kids the keys to a car to do it themselves.
Unfortunately kids think they are invincible and nothing can happen to them and get carried away. They like to flash off their new cars (which from recent accidents seem to be expensive, fast sports cars) and drive their friends around, windows down, music blasting. A new 17 yr. old driver should not have a packed out car and certainly should not be driving on major parkways without experience.
ETA: I think drivers ed needs to be longer than a few weeks AND restrictions on driving should be made longer.

Re: driving age: spinoff to teen car accident death
I have to admit that growing up, my parents had very good driving skills. They didn't drive recklessly and I attribute a lot of my driving skills to having them as good role models.
I hate to see when young people just drive recklessly coz either
a. they think it is cool and want to show off to their friends. b. really didn't get a good driving education.
I got my license a very long time ago, 22 years ago to be exact and I could have sworn that you needed driving school lessons or driver's ed to take the road test. I know people, recently, that never took a driving class and just took the road test until they passed it.
I just read that the DMV recommends to take professional driving classes or get lessons from someone experienced. What happens if you don't want to spend money on lessons and you don't know any good drivers, how do you expect not to become one of those reckless drivers.
I think that since driving a vehicle recklessly can be very dangerous, I think the DMV should enforce people to take driving lessons.

Re: driving age: spinoff to teen car accident death
A. don't buy them a freaking muscle car or even a new car in general
B. they are only to drive to school/work and if they abuse it they don't have a car
C. If your kid is a immature little prick then no car, let them walk.

My parents taught me all that and I have always had good reflexes. My parents thought I was responsible, cause I had a good act. Yet I could have been killed the way I drove my car. And its not my parents fault.

Same thing here. At the time we had an open campus and we basically would all race back to school to see who could get there the fastest.

I agree, 16 is way too young to be driving.
I've said this before. My mom's rule was that we could get our permits at 17, but we also had to have a job by age 17 and take Driver's Ed. We were then allowed to get our license at 18.
Same rules will go in my household.

I'm not arguing with you. I'm not sure if I'm not expressing myself clearly but you seem to be getting defensive.
I was not referring to the 17 yr. old that just had a car accident. I am talking about in general, the number of young kids 17 and 18 yrs old, involved in car accidents lately. I think in general we have become too lenient with giving kids cars and licenses because it is more convenient.
I think things need to change across the board...laws need to be stricter, more restrictions need to be placed on young drivers, parents need to be more strict and aware of their kids driving habits and kids need to be more responsible or actually, understand the responsibility of getting behind a wheel where they or someone else can be killed.

And you know as well as me about car accidents because of several students we went to school with dying in car accidents, even during school hours which is why we ended up with a closed campus when we got to HS.

I agree 16 is too young to operate a car but I guess the theory is it gives than two years of driving experience before getting their full license at 18. Most people have their full license at 18 because they are going to college or working f/t. Unfortunately I think some 18 yr. olds are too immature to be driving

I know 25 year olds that are too immature to be driving. I also know 45 year olds that think it's ok to have a bunch of drinks and then drive because they are only "buzzed not drunk". It all come's down to the individual. I got my permit the day I turned 16. I scheduled my road test the same day (this was before there was a mandated waiting period). I took driving lessons, passed my road test the first time around and **knocks wood** have never been in an accident. There are always going to be immature people that shouldn't be behind the wheel... regardless of age. But, I know plenty of 16 year olds that are more then responsible enough to be driving.
