I saved like crazy since I first started working and we used that for 20% but we realized we were a little short for our closing costs so we took a loan out from my 401k. Got married a month later and that $ was used for home improvements.

No investments that hit big
We are using plain old fashioned savings from working our hineys off
us too and sometimes it seems like we are never going to save enough to buy a home.
same here...we did it..you can too...it just may take some time.

DH cashed in some brokerage accounts he wasn't happy with. We put about 33% down. We also just sold DH's condo for full asking price. There was no mortgage on the condo as he had paid it off years ago. We're taking half of that and paying down the mortgage, which we just did also with our bonuses from work. After next week, we'll have paid down just about half our mortgage 
We've been in the house since last August.

Saved for the 20% downpayment for our condo. We'll be using the condo profit as downpayment for a house.
