Does your town have a noisy helicopter problem?
http://www.newsday.com/news/local/suffolk/ny-liheli1220,0,5525780.story
I have been following the fight against the helicopters in some towns, as posted in Newsday. How many of you would say the helicopters are a problem where you live? Or do you just hear them once in a while? Or is it constantly and are they low flying?
Give any details you wish.

Re: Does your town have a noisy helicopter problem?
We are not far from McArthur airport so yes it's bad but my dh grew up in Howard Beach and compared to the concord I think he can deal with anything. My daughter on the other hand LOVES it. Honestly I have learned to tune it out.
We are in Ronkonkoma so we are central Suffolk so I put other.

we live very close to the LI sound in Eastern Suffolk & in the summer only on Friday afternoons & evenings & Sunday nights we have way too much helicopter traffic. They are low flying at times. Its the shuttles to the hamptons, they need to change the flight path or fly higher.

We hear them once in a while - we live near SB Hospital, so if anyone is sent there via chopper, we'll hear it, but in the far distance. It doesn't bother me.

I've maybe heard one once in our new home (South Shore in Nassau). Then again, I'm rarely home...

Re: Does your town have a noisy helicopter problem?
When I lived in Long Beach, about 5 blocks from the beach, I heard them constantly and they were pretty loud. But so were the planes flying overhead constantly.
Some of them were private, some Nassau County PD, and some Coast Guard (there's a station at Jones Beach)
In St. James, I never hear them. But I'm pretty far from the coast.

I know in the article it stated Smithtown was getting hit hard. Are you in the TOS?

We do and in starting Thursdays in the spring/summer the helicopters out to the Hamptons are non-stop through the weekend!!!!
And I used to live in Queens near LGA and my apt building was in the cloudy/bad weather flight path and I almost don't think it was as annoying!

Re: Does your town have a noisy helicopter problem?
I'm north shore Nassau and I hardly notice them. They do go by, but I guess it doesn't bother me. We see them a lot more in the summer (and maybe so because we happen to be outside more).
I work in Woodbury, in the Crossways Park Coporate Drive area, and there is a helicopter landing pad there, right off the Seafod Oyster Bay Expressway (Rt. 135). It's freaky coming north on 135 and see one hovering right about the lanes of northbound traffic

We're in Ronkonkoma (Central Suffolk) but not near the airport. We never hear helicopters.

Re: Does your town have a noisy helicopter problem?
I live in Southampton and during the summer it is a CONSTANT problem... people from the city love to fly in to the Hamptons by helicopter but they forget about the locals that have to hear it allllll the time

I lived in LB right on the beach and never remember them bothering me - I guess I tuned it out.

I used to work in 300 Crossways on the 3rd floor and they used to fly right above my head. I wouldn't hear them until they were right outside my window and it never ceased to scare the crap out of me.

At first it was visitors that would point it out, and I wouldn't notice. But now that I'm gone, the difference in noise is like night and day!

Then we worked in the same building I'm in 330, which is just the opposite side. Who ever was in the 300 side moved out because the parking lot is empty now!

Re: Does your town have a noisy helicopter problem?
We had the whole 3rd floor (Military Car Sales) but the rest of the building was individual offices. I think Cablevision had a bank of suites there too.
I used to think it was Charles Dolan coming in in the chopper. I never knew it was a public pad.

I'm north shore Suffolk (bordering Nassau) and I hear them in the summer. We seem to be under the flight pattern for Manhattanites flying out to the Hamptons. Doesn't really bother me.

Re: Does your town have a noisy helicopter problem?
I never hear helicopters by us - Suffolk South Shore - but my sister lives on the North Fork and in the Summer you hear many on the weekends.
We hear the FI ferry in the summer - I love that sound.

Re: Does your town have a noisy helicopter problem?
I live on the south shore of Nassau In Massapequa, One of the things i love about my town is that there arent alot of planes that fly over low enough to make alot of noise
When we rented in long beach, a low flying plane flew over every 60 seconds, low flying helicopters, Army helipcoters flew over and were so loud they scared the crap out of you.
I DO NOT MISS LONG BEACH!
