Does anyone have their DS in Dance Class?
I brought my DS to Hip Hop class today. He did really well and enjoyed it, so I signed him. I was just curious if anyone else on this board has their son enrolled in some type of dance class?
Im usually secure in my parenting decisions, in that if a parent has a different opinion or does things differently it doesnt affect me. In other words im very open minded in accepting other people's beliefs.
However, I got such opposition for this one from 99% of my fam & friends that they had me second guessing myself & why I think I procrastinated taking him. He seemed to have such a good time, so im glad I finally did take him.

If he had fun then who cares what others think. I grew up with two guys that danced well into their twenties. Not that this matters but both are straight and married with kids.

Re: Does anyone have their DS in Dance Class?
LOL, yea Idc what others think. Reason why I took him.
My family did get in my head a little bit because everyone was so adamant with their opinions. Which I thought was crazy cause I have two boy cousins who are brothers. One was in dance classes as a child and the other never took any. The one who didnt take classes, is gay. LOL, i know it doesnt prove anything. I just couldn't understand why my fam members of all ppl were being so silly about it.
I was just curious if anyone else had their son in dance class on the boards.

Re: Does anyone have their DS in Dance Class?
A friend of mine has her 6 yr old son in hip hop. He loves it! I think he is only 1 of 2 boys in the class. But he doesn't care. He has a great time. He's also in gymnastics. But his mother was an elite gymnast.
He's also in Soccer and Baseball in the Spring.

My DS takes hip hop and I'm his teacher. My DH didn't love it initially, but he got over it. My DS also plays soccer and basketball. He just enjoys dancing too.

Re: Does anyone have their DS in Dance Class?
I don't have a DS but the dance school we used to go to had a hip hop class that was taught by a man and the class had more than half of it's students boys. I think hip hop is fine for boys to take! Are there any other boys in the class? I have to be honest and say I would only do the class if there was at least one other boy in it.

Re: Does anyone have their DS in Dance Class?
My first thought was that I wouldn't put my son in dance... But then I thought of the Disney channel and Fresh Beat Band junior beats and all those boys who can dance. They had to start somewhere...and I quickly changed my opinion on this! Kudos to you for not letting others sway you, especially since your DS had fun!
I've been thinking about putting my DD in karate for awhile...but she's only 2.5. I took karate as a kid, and I know it's not the same bc it tends to be more co-ed, but I think it's good to let kids try out all different things to see what they like.

Re: Does anyone have their DS in Dance Class?
My LO is obv. to young but I will 100% be enroll ing him in dance class. Ideally I'd like for him to take tap and hip-hop but I'm open to ballet for a good dance foundation.
I'm going to get some opinions from friends more then family but whatever.

Re: Does anyone have their DS in Dance Class?
My brother was in hip hop as a child. I think he did it for 5 years he was really good at it and competed. He was also a hockey player, bmx rider and wrestler. He did what made him happy. My dad didn't love that he went to dance but my mom could have cared less what anyone thought and my brother really didn't care what people thought of him. He also loved that it was a great way to meet girls if your son likes it I think its great! If I had a son and he wanted to dance I would totally enroll him.

Yes there were three other boys in the class. I think he was even more relaxed because there was a little girl from his kindergarten class taking it as well.
Funny because when the little girl was finished taking the class she told me that she was going to ballet. She said but Ajay isn't going because that for girls. Her dad said no that's not true. And she chimed in "oh yea, we need them when they are older and strong so they can pick up the girls."
I was dying, lol

Lol that was my defense, I told my DH I think a guy who knows how to dance is sexy. I love to dance, my DH is a two stepper and only when typsy.
My DH the comedian said you want our son to be kevin federline. I told him no, maybe Justin Timberlake or Chris Judd. Lol
DS also tries all the sports: T-ball, tennis and basketball. Next month is soccer. He also takes Kung-Fu and loves It. I want him to try everything and see what he likes.
For those who mentioned Karate, I strongly recommend it. I wish I put DS in it earlier.

My DS wants to do hip hop bad! I would have signed him up but it is expensive. DH doesn't mind thought and DS dances all the time so its not a big deal to us!

Because they are nuts. They associate dance as a girl thing.

Re: Does anyone have their DS in Dance Class?
Don't people understand that pushing kids to conform to gender stereotypes doesn't do anything to encourage creativity? Telling a little kid they can't do something because of their gender is just wrong. Let your little guy dance if he wants to! If any of your family members give you a hard time just remind them that Patrick Swayze did ballet!

Re: Does anyone have their DS in Dance Class?
Not currently but, when my DS was five he was really into break dancing and he took a class - the kids ranged from 5-10 yrs old and they were all boys with the exception of one girl and both instructors were boys.

I can't understand why anyone would take issue with it. So weird. We have a 4yo who loves to dance and have looked into classes for him, just haven't yet been able to find an affordable one that would fit in with our schedules.

Honestly, I looked for DS and never found a class with boys in it.
We just kept him in Gymboree.

DS is 7 and is in his third year of hip-hop. It is an all boys class taught by a male instructor. The boys routine gets the most applause at the recital. They are so entertaining. He is also on travel soccer and plays basketball and baseball. They have so much fun!

What is more manly than being surrounded by a room full of athletic females, all to yourself?
If it's "dance class" it's girly, but if it's at a "club", you're the manliest man on the planet....
