Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Torticolis - UPDATED (spoke to the doc)
Someone on here mentioned to me that based on my pics of Em - that she might have torticolis...
I totally appreciate her reaching out to me (sincerely) - and i wanted to know if anyone had any experience or stories to share... Based on the info below - i think that Em may have it, but a slight case of it, if that's possible. She DEFINITELY has a tilt (and was even tilted in my uterus, which is why she never dropped and i had the c-section) - but she turns her head BOTH ways and is not flat headed...
Here's the definition: Torticollis is a condition which affects the neck and spine in many infants. A common name for Torticollis is "wry neck". The literal translation is "crooked neck". It is a very treatable condition, but should be taken seriously and treated by your child's pediatrician.
The first signs of Torticollis may not appear until the infant is 2-3 months old. You may notice that your child stares into one direction. Your child may seem to hold his neck to the side, and you may even notice a sizable lump just above the infant's collar bone.
The condition affects the sternocleidomastoid muscle which connects the base of the skull to the collar bone. This muscle is the main muscle that is used to move the head from side to side. In an infant with Torticollis, the muscle is shorter on the side that the head is tilted to. With treatment, the muscle will grow and stretch; but if left untreated the condition may cause a permanent limitation of the infant's neck movement. If action is not taken, the infant's head may flatten on one side and the face may become mis-formed.
_________________________________________
so we saw the doc today because of a heat rash emmy has and we asked her about her head. she said she doesn't have torticolis - she can freely move her head around fully any time she wants to. She suggested maybe in the carseat to put a facecloth under the head rest (we have the noggin nest) to force her head straight in there - but she didn't think she needs therapy or stretches.
thank you all so very much for sharing your experiences! i truly appreciate it!

Re: Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Torticolis
My niece had it. She was always had her head tilted to one side. She could move her head, but it seemed that she favored one side. My sister took her to the ped and then to a specialist, and that is where she was told what she had. They monitored her, and had some scans done on her neck. If it makes you feel better I would ask the ped.
My niece is now 2 and perfectly fine.

Re: Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Torticolis
Frankie had it! We luckily treated it early (My mom noticed it when he was 3 months). We took him to the ped, who recommended he get evaluated by a physical therapist! Turns out he had torticollis. He was in physical therapy once a week, and I worked with him everyday, 2-3 times a day! He just recently met all his goals a few ago at 9 months!
Its actually fairly common and not that big of a deal when treated early on!
Feel free to FM me anytime if you wanna talk about it

Heres some pics of when it was bad (he always hugged his right shoulder, so that was the muscle we needed to stretch)

Re: Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Torticolis
my DD had a slight case of it...she favored one side when sleeping and looked all the way to the one side, but not to the other...she was also a late roller so that combined..she had a flat head and had to wear a helmet!
But your DD looks older and able to move around so not on the back of her head as much!
We saw a physical therapist for a couple of months and it helped...but I thought of it as more of an education for me and my DH bec what she did with my DD, we had to do at home as well and we continued it even after we stopped going...
Now she is 2.5 yrs old and has no signs (she didnt even before the helmet came off - she wore it for 4 months or so) and a perfectly shaped head!

Re: Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Torticolis
My DS had it - my SIL noticed it as her 2 kids had it. We went for EI but it was not severe enough to qualify. We took him to PT for about a year, and then he was fine. He is 2 1/2 now, and fine. If you are concerned, ask your Ped. He should recommend a PT if he believes it might be an issue.
Please feel free to FM me if you would like any other info. I can also send you some pics...

Re: Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Torticolis
My son had it. He was diagnosed at the ped's office and a physical therapist came to our house to assess him. He had a very mild case. For about 2-3 weeks we'd just try to get him to turn the other way (make noise, call his name, etc.) and then he was fine. Supposedly it's very common, esp with big babies - mine was sort of stuck on my tailbone.

Re: Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Torticolis
It's more common than you think.
Usually adults get it by sleeping the wrong way at night and the "SCM" muscle gets into spasm and the next day you can't turn your neck. Takes a few days then goes away.
For babies, sometimes it's from birth trauma and takes much longer to correct.
Go to your PED. Usually a PT will work on it. I have seen amazing results.

My son could move his head but definitely favored one side. If you don't need a referral you could get a PT eval. Having PT helped him a lot.

Same with my DS. His head leaned to the rt side when he was resting but he always had full range of motion.

My oldest had it when he was an infant. I had never heard of it but looking back, he had a tilt in every pic. Physical therapy for a few months was all we needed and they showed us a few easy things to do at home. Unless it's severe, which you would have noticed yourself irregardless of if you were familiar with it before, it is generally corrected fairly easily.

No offense to you or your ped, but I may get a second opinion with a PT. Maybe your ped is "missing" something that needs to be addressed.
Doesn't make her a bad doctor, but sometimes opinions vary on this type of stuff

Re: Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Torticolis - UPDATED (spoke to the doc)
Both of my boys have it. My ped did not think it was an issue and thought they would grow out of it. Since my boys were in the NICU, we were provided with a healthcare nurse the county to come to our home. We also were told to see a developmental doctor which is recommended for preemies. The healthcare nurse recommended an EI eval. My boys did not qualify for EI, but since 4.5 months they have been receiving PT 2x a week. The dev. doc recommended that I take them for PT. They were able to turn their heads side to side but they both favored one side. It's funny b/c they favor opposite sides so I always have to arrange them so they look to the opposite side. I would def. recommend getting a 2nd opinion. Your daughter looks in your avatar the way my son always puts his head. My boys are much looser now but I still need to stretch them regularly. Good Luck

ITA- I'd get a 2nd opinion if I was you! Torticollis is so easy to treat, eps if caught early on.

Re: Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Torticolis - UPDATED (spoke to the doc)
We thought AVa had it at about 2 months. We noticed that she really favored one side. We always put her down on her back and her head automatically would turn to one side.
That was in fact why I called peds. I didnt know anything about torticollis at the time.
He examined her and said she had the start of it but it wasnt severe enough were it needed to be evaluated further.
So he gave us the exercises to do and me, my mom and my DH did it with her everyday multiple times a day to help stretch the neck muscle and by 3 months it was gone!
Honestly, I just think being educated on changing the position of the head would have prevented this.
Good luck to you. I am guessing since emma is 6 months now she probably does not have it bc pediatrican would have mentioned it by now. (they would have noticed it)

I agree, I would def get a 2nd opinion or simply insist to your Pedi to give a presciption for EI. I did and had the services for about 6 months and my DS is fine now. He preferred his left and his head was semi flat. At 2 months I noticed by the 3rd month his pedi said he will grow out of it and I said well, I don't want to take any chances I want him to be seen by EI and will take it from there. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Best of luck! THey will teach you exercises (simple), come to you home about 2x a week. I learned a lot with them as well.
