Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

Thank you everyone Chat Icon I really appreciate all the support. It's scaring the cr@p out of me. Especially since it's just developed now at 3 years.

Ugh, why is parenting so hard!!! Chat Icon

I plan on taking her to the ped cardiologist and getting every test they need. I am praying it's as "innocent" as you say Chat Icon

Thanks again everyone Chat Icon I will keep you updated

At 7mo, the ped heard a slight murmur and recommended a ped cardiologist. At that appt it was determined that DD has pulmonary stenosis--basically a narrow valve opening to the heart. I was totally distraught, but the cardiologist assured me that it's common and just needs to be monitored.

I TOTALLY understand you freaking out!

They heard one in DS a few months ago. It turns out it is completely normal...he has it & they fell it's just a normal murmur & may even go away at some point!!Chat Icon

Hope that helps!

Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

Noah has one. It appeared when he was 3 or 4. He went to a cardiologist and had allll sorts of tests that made my heart pound. And it was an innocent murmur.. functional.

My nephew also had one. He actually had a tiny hole in his aorta. It healed itself and he is now a strapping, healthy 14 year old.

I'm sure it will be fine.Chat Icon

Our second DS has one...They told us in the NICU it was very common in preemie babies. They told us it will fix itself in time. We are being followed by a cardiologist

DD had both a murmur caused by a premature heartbeat, and a small hole between the ventricles of her heart, detected at birth. Cardiologist assured me that both are harmless, and will likely go away over time. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: My sister has one as well, and is totally fine.

Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

My MIL has one and is fine...delivered 4 babies without a problem as well..not that we are trying to rush Bella.

Last time I was in the ER I had a doctor tell me he heard a murmur (not the first time a doctor told me that but both times were extrememly stressful) but nothing was ever mentioned when I had an EKG and no one else has raised concerns. I haven't had a problem otherwise.

That's all I got mama. I hope that everything is okay Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

She heard it on Madison when she was just under a year. We took her to cardiologist she recommended, Dr. Vallone. The office was great the first time. He said it wasn't anything to be concerned about and it should probably clear on its own. He wanted us to come back a year later. We did and everything was fine and we don't have to go back. Hopefully it's just one of those things that goes away on it's own. I know my brother has mitro-valve prolapse since he was a kid and it never caused any problems. I know how freaked out I was so make the appt. ASAP so you can clear your mind of all the bad thoughts!!

Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

Crashing.. My brother was born with one.. he gets an EKG done every year and it was quite scary in the beginning. He still has it, and he's just careful with everything that he does. Nothing strenous, nothing to over extert himself, which was a bit hard growing up, but you figure out what works for you and stuff.

He keeps his weight in check, and is cautious. It can be quite devstating when you first hear it, but for small children it will clear on its own, but if it doesn't, don't worry at all. Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

My baby had one but it is gone. Apparently they are common during a growth spurt. He also had a PFO but we just found out from the pediatrician that it closed up. It could go away on its own, but they seem to be fairly common.

(PFO - While a baby grows in the womb, there is a normal opening between the left and right atria (upper chambers) of the heart. If this opening fails to close naturally soon after the baby is born, the hole is called patent foramen ovale (PFO))Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

My DD has an innocent murmur that goes in and out. She's been followed by a Pediatric Cardiologist since she was born. I think you are in LI- but I LOVE LOVE her cardiologist and if you want a recommendation in NJ I have one. Some background:

Long story short- they heard something when DD was born, sent her to the NICU for it. We followed up with the Ped. Card. 1 month later. At that time, he noticed a hemangioma on DD. She's now getting treatment for her hemangioma with a Cardiac medicine and goes for follow up 1x per month- she's 12 months now. So for the past year, we've seen the Card. every month- sometimes he hears the murmor- sometimes not. My sister and I BOTH have innocent murmors and have never been anything our whole lives. The Dr. said they are SO COMMON and NOTHING to worry about at all. If it's something more, they can pick that up immediately with an ECHO or other tests.

FM me if you have any questions. Chat Icon to you and I hope all is ok with your DD Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

We just went through the SAME thing last week. The ped found a murmur in Emerson (4months) at her last appointment and we were freaking out. He said it didn't sound like a bad one and we could wait until the next appointment to see how it sounds. To be sure, however, we took her to a Pediatric Cardiologist the NEXT day. They did a sonogram of her heart and it turns out it is an innocent murmer and there is nothing to worry about. They say it is SUPER common and should go away when she is a teenager. I would go to the cardiologist to put yourself at ease. THe doctors there said they get parents calling for this all the time, we went to one in Babylon...let me know if you want the number.Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

As others have said, I've heard it is very common too, though it's probably still so hard to hear about your own baby Chat Icon

Mine was detected at 18 months old....I was monitored every year (still am)....needed antibiotics for dental work/antibiotics/if I bled in the mouth (the recommendations for that have since changed in the last few years actually, no antibiotics needed-- I needed them when I had C, but when I had M it was after they changed the recommendations so I didn't need them).

I actually have something more complex than a regular murmur, it just makes my heart make a murmur sound that's why it's called a murmur casually....I have a bicuspid aorta with stenosis. Hasn't limited me at all in life. Will probably have to have surgery in 10 years or so....but not thinking about that yet!

Hoping you get all the answers you need and that it's just an innocent murmur! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I tried posting this before..

Deleted it...

But now Im back....

Cause I know you will know what Im trying to say...Chat Icon

My daughter Ariel has a very very very slight heart murmur. Most peds cant hear it but a cardiologist can. In her case it isnt an innocent murmur. She has a hole between the upper two chambers of her heart. It's called an Atrial Septal Defect. She was born with it.

In 16 years it has never caused her a single problem. It's small and it doesnt need to be fixed. She doesnt need meds when she goes to the dentist. Nothing.

My point is that even when it's something...which Im sure isnt what it is in Bella's case..it can still be "nothing"...

my ds has one. ped. noticed it recommended seeing heart doctor. Went and saw the Head Ped. Heart doctor and was happily informed if he is sitting up you can't hear it only when he is laying down. Also, said it means NOTHING...Yay! I am sure it will work out, good luck.

I have a heart murmur and mitral valve prolapse and I am ok Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would take her to a ped. cardiologist to do an echo and make sure it is nothing more serious but lots of people have murmurs and nothing ever comes of it. I could give you the name of my ped. cardiologist that I went to and also took TJ too when he was born but they are way out by me in Roslyn, affiliated with St. Francis. I am sure you can find someone closer to you.

I also have a murmur and MVP. I was diagnosed at 13 and am now 26 and I'm fine Chat Icon I totally agree with everything Jellybean said above...definately go see a ped cardiologist just to be sure, but mostlikely she'll outgrow it.

I developed one as a child after having scarlet fever, and I am fine. I have a mitral valve prolapse, which I guess is from that too,and it is fairly common! Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

I have one, and both of my girls have it. I also have a mitral valve prolapse, and so does my 4yo DD. I also have another condition where the muscles in one part of my heart wall don't snap back the way they should.

Honestly, I have had some problems during my life. When I am stressed or nervous, or have had too much caffeine (I know my limit) I tend to get heart palpitations. It is worse when I was pregnant, and after the delivery of my 3rd child they had to give me some medicine for it in the hospital. Neither of my DDs are symptomatic, and hopefully will stay that way.

It's really not a big deal. It has not inhibited my life in any huge way. Sometimes my heart gets a little funny and I have to rest for a little while before continuing with whatever I was doing.

Bringing your DD to the cardiologist will put your mind at ease, but it is a very common thing and she will probably grow out of it if there is no family history Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone have any experience with heart murmurs in their children?

A couple of weeks ago my ped heard one with my dd. She said not to be nervous because 99% of the time it is an "innocent murmur" and that it seems to be more common than not in babies.

Sure enough I took her to the cardiologist the other day and it was just what he called an innocent functional murmur and she will grow out of it...we just have to bring her back in 2 years. The dr was very reassuring that it is very common, and there is nothing we have to do no restrictions.Chat Icon

We took her to a Ped Cardiologist in St Francis Hosp. They were great.
