Does anyone else not want their child playing with "dollar store" toys?

This is not about being ungrateful as I appreciate whenever people think of DD. But I do not like my DD playing with dollar store toys that don't have the ASTM marking/regulation on them. Is anyone else with me on this? I appreciate when family thinks of her, but a few of them know how I feel about unregulated toys and keep buying her toys that are from these stores and also aren't even "age" appropriate. Is anyone with me on this and how do you handle it?

I have a closet full of age inappropriate crap. Ryan's older than your DD, so I'm generally not too concerned with his safety - but do regulate what he can have (took away those tiny army men figurines and jump rope that someone put in his Easter basket Chat Icon )

I'm not really strict about things being regulated - I'd be more concerned with something not being age appropriate and something he could more obviously hurt himself with -

I don't think there's much you can do other than donate/throw them away

I don't trust them as far as BPA, lead, etc. I throw them out. While I feel bad, they are cheap toys, so it's not a huge waste of money.

I feel so bad throwing them out. Unfortunately it's my MOM of all people. And it's not a money issue (lack of) at all. It's just plain lack of regard for my wishes. I rather her not buy anything for my DD than things that are NOT age appropriate and are made by some cheap unregulated company and made in CHINA, unlike big brands that even if made out of the country, are regulated.

I just feel bad throwing these things out but don't like my DD using them at all.

Re: Does anyone else not want their child playing with "dollar store" toys?

It depends on the gift.

If it's a plastic bucket and shovel, or a coloring book and crayons...no big deal.

If it's a couple of painted (toxic??) wooden cars with small, moveable wheels that and are clearly marked for ages 2+, then no, especially when the recipient of these said cars is only 4 months old and puts everything in his mouth!! Chat Icon

hand them right back to her!!!!

I'm sorry, but if I explained something to someone and they do it anyway...that is not my problem.

when she buys them...tell her you won't use them and that she should return them.

I don't mind coloring books but I do not let her have their "toys". I throw them out, but usually after they are gone.

Ok just threw out something she was given recently. I hate doing it but cringe every time she reaches for them. DONE.

I guess Ophelia is right. Not my problem she insists on wasting her money.Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone else not want their child playing with "dollar store" toys?

I agree with Erin and Ophelia. I let my kids play with toys that I think are safe. I get the email updates about recalls and I read every one of them. If I know someone who has something that was recalled, I will forward them the link. I feel, that as a parent, it is my job to make sure that what ever toy my kids play with are safe.

As for your mom, I agree, I would hand the toys back to her but also make sure she is not keeping them at her house for your DC to play with there.

I guess I'm the minority. I don't mind my kids playing with them BUT only because they're older. Almost 4 and 6.5 yrs old. I would not want them playing with them when they were little though. At their age now, it's GREAT filler gifts. You can always find something to put in an Easter basket, stocking, or a reward gift for only a dollar! Chat Icon

I get the recalls too and thats my point. When you buy some cheapie brand whatever, good luck even knowing the name of it after you throw out the packaging. So that's my issue with cheap, non brand name things.

Re: Does anyone else not want their child playing with "dollar store" toys?

ITA....my mom bought DD a bunch of crappy toys in the very beginning and I explained the danger to her and she freaked, my mother is the worry wart of the family..so I threw them out...since then she's only bought wooden toys manufactured in Europe...
If you told your mom then I would hand them right back to her maybe that'll get the point across!!!

ouch, really? I think that is kind of harsh....I do not blame you if you want to throw them out, but in front of the gift giver? I would be VERY put off with that, JMHO

Re: Does anyone else not want their child playing with "dollar store" toys?

I have always let DS play with balls, books, stickers, kites, sidewalk chalk and like things from the dollar store. The main reason he doesn't play with the other junk is because they are junk and I don't want to hear him cry when they break. Name brands and gov't reulations mean nothing to me after seeing how many things are constantly being recalled that are gov't regulated. That's worth less than the dollar tree store toy imo.

ITA with this.

Plus the amount of time that DS plays with something I don't really feel that much harm can be caused....

No, I don't get him stuff from these places. It's not a snob thing, but I do get the recall lists, and I have seen crayons, chalk, clothing, etc. made by companies I never heard of and noted "carried by Dollar Tree" or some such thing.

Name brand toys get recalled a lot too, but I feel like I see more from the dollar stores.

My other thing with this is, it's hard to know the names of these things, from these stores, when and if even recalled.

Re: Does anyone else not want their child playing with "dollar store" toys?

DS doesn't have any dollar store toys. If he did, I probably wouldn't care that much unless he is putting it in his mouth. He usually only plays with a toy for about 20 minutes.

Sometimes he gets little toys as favors at parties but I'm not too concerned about those.

I also agree that throwing out a gift in front of the gift giver is harsh.

Throwing it out is totally understandable...but in front of the gift giver?

Re: Does anyone else not want their child playing with "dollar store" toys?

no honestly. I personally think if it bothers you so much, then just donate them or throw them out after she leaves. Why make her feel bad about a $1 toy. Pick your battles.

Re: Does anyone else not want their child playing with "dollar store" toys?

If you don't feel comfortable, throw them out. I have to just add that I used to play with those cheap toys as a kid & I used to put them in my mouth b/c I used to put everything in my mouth & I was fine. It wouldn't really bother me if my DC was given those toys to play with.

So do I need to dump Ale's gift pails for her party this Friday? Are people going to walk out the door and throw everything in the trash? Or worse, throw it all out right in front of my face?? Chat Icon
