So do I need to dump Ale's gift pails for her party this Friday? Are people going to walk out the door and throw everything in the trash? Or worse, throw it all out right in front of my face??
I'll chuck it right in the garbage AT CEC

NO WAY!!! There are lots of moms like me that don't even think about stuff like this. I'm happy whenever anybody thinks of my son. I don't think about stuff like this. Def. don't feel bad.

i agree...i throw them out--and usually in front of the people who buy them
ouch, really? I think that is kind of harsh....I do not blame you if you want to throw them out, but in front of the gift giver? I would be VERY put off with that, JMHO
I did this to people I have told I dont want those little toys that my kids could choke on in my house

Seriously? That would be the last time anyone in your home EVER got a gift from me. - How unbelievably rude !!
I completely understand that it's a parents' decision what their child plays with - but to throw a gift in the garbage directly in front of the person's face IMO is doing MORE harm to your child as far as manners and how to TREAT people then that cheap toy ever could -

I think what JBM is saying is similar to what I am saying....it's not necessarily about the toy..it's about ME telling YOU something as the MOTHER and you not giving a ****.
I am not talking about party favors and the like. I don't think people are giving out lead painted hot wheels at their princess parties....coloring books, sand pails..all that stuff is different.
so YES, if you take the stance that I am "silly" or a "Fool" or too stuck up or high strung or whatever you want to think of me, then YES, eff you..I will hand it back or throw it out right in your face.
you don't respect me, I dont have to tip toe around you either.

Thank you so much for coming to my defense
I swear--the high and mighty attitudes on this board sometimes could really drive me crazy
I have said repeatedly that I dont want that junk (the little things my kids can choke on---not pails, coloring books etc) in my apt
when my 3 month old chokes on the crap will the gift giver be at the hospital with me.
I even made such a good point that the gift giver threw it in the garbage herself

I disagree- soemone took the time to think of your child and bring them a gift - I think it's EXTREMELY rude and ungrateful to throw that gift in the garbage while the person is standing there to prove a point - b/c it does not meet your standards. - it doesn't matter what 'you've already TOLD them" If you feel the need to explain or remind the person of your standards, that's one thing (which I also think is kind of rude) If it's not yet age appropriate, all you have to say is "Thank You, we'll save this until Sean is old enough not to choke on these small parts" or whatever - People don't always know what is appropriate for a child at certain ages - I have a 13 month old - I have NO clue what a 3 year old would like - forget someone who doesn't have children at all .......... ??? -

that's fine. you are well within your rights to disagree and think anything you want of me. at the end of the day, what I want for my child comes first.
but I do want to point out the OP is talking about her MOTHER. and all of my answers are given with that mindset. that this is someone CLOSE to me. that I have spoken to before. not a little friend's mommy or daddy and I think that is also getting lost.
would I do it to you if you gave my son a gift? NO WAY.
but in the SPECIFIC scenario set up by the OP, HELLS YES I would.
so, that's it. in this specific scenario, I would be a *****. I am ok with that.

I guess I'm the minority. I don't mind my kids playing with them BUT only because they're older. Almost 4 and 6.5 yrs old. I would not want them playing with them when they were little though. At their age now, it's GREAT filler gifts. You can always find something to put in an Easter basket, stocking, or a reward gift for only a dollar!
I am with you. But DS was NEVER a put things in your mouth kid either. He generally plays with things appropriately.
And I dont mind if people buy things that are for an age range older than him. I have a bin down in the basement of toys for him to grow into and at random times I grab something and he gets excited to get something new.
ETA: For the record I have not read this whole post...this is just my opinion. BUt I do understand others not want them in their house.

I don't mind at all. Lily plays with all kinds of things.
If I had a problem with it though, I would likely accept it, and donate it or throw it out after the person left. Even if I'd expressed my dislike for those types of toys in the past....I think it's a bit rude to give back a gift or throw it out in front of the person. It's the thought that counts, no?

Re: Does anyone else not want their child playing with "dollar store" toys?
I don't have an issue with a lot of the stuff but my kids are past the putting toys in their mouth stage (for the most part ) They did go to a party recently and the take home goody was a metal water bottle was from Dollar Tree. I shop there so I knew it was and I tossed them, I really don't want them drinking from the bottles. I am not comfortable with certain things from DT, no biggie.

I don't care about the fact that it's bought at the Dollar Store.
I am with Jen on this one though- I hate when people give gifts that are not age appropriate. I have so many things saved for years to come. They put ages on the boxes for a reason.

Re: Does anyone else not want their child playing with "dollar store" toys?
Depends on what it is. Pail & shovel, bubbles, stickers, coloring books, ... these are OK to me. Someone had given me baby bottles and rattles from the dollar store and I threw them out. There are also many things from the dollar store cheaply made and not safe, like someone mentioned cars, I would throw that out too.
