I would never do it. To me this would be like shopping for baby things before you are PG (also something I would never do).

i wouldn't but to each his/her own. however, i do think it is kind of rude to waste the sales staff time when she has NO intention of purchasing of dress.

Re: Do you think this is strange?

i knew someone who was SERIOUSLY contemplating (and almost went through w/ it) going and putting $ down on a hall to hold a date - WITHOUT her boyfriend knowing - assuming: "he's going to propose in the near future anyway so i don't want to risk having the date i want being taken" ...if a guy and a girl discuss getting married and are sure of it but he is still saving for a ring and they have a specific date in mind that they really need to make sure is available - i can totally understand that - b/c, since both parties have discussed and agreed, you are technically engaged - just no actual ring yet - some people never even get a ring - stuff can be expensive - so i can see that, in certain situations but to go about that without the guy knowing - on your own - IDK Chat Icon Chat Icon

stuff like what i wrote about above and what is described in the OP make me wonder about these women a little - i think it is pretty impulsive and comes off as a little immature that you can't wait until you are engaged to go about doing wedding related things, JMHO.

Re: Do you think this is strange?

Here's the only scenario where I think it's not so strange. When I lived in Boston, my friends would go looking with me for gowns for my wedding. None of them were married, engaged or even dating anyone, so rather than stand around looking at me, they all tried on dresses, too. But that was just funny and silly because I was actually looking for a dress.
But whatever, it's a freaking dress. Who cares? My question is, how did anyone find out? Was she hoping that he'd find out and suddenly want to marry her?

if I was a guy...I'd run the other way...far, far, far away...

Yes, it's strange.

ditto. especially when she says she's no where near being engaged. it makes her look really desperate.

I can see why the friends say she's "acting crazy". It does come off as a bit desperate. I'm not at all surprised by their reaction.

It could be a flag for the guy too... it makes her look as though she cares more about the actual wedding than a marriage.

If she enjoys doing it, its not strange. I can imagine the fun of trying on wedding dresses...its like something out of a movie. Everyone is different...

eta....I don't intend on buying an Aston Martin but I do enjoy looking at the cars at the dealership near to my office....

I agree with this.

unless she was invovled in other pushy/freaky behavior...it's like playing dress up.

Re: Do you think this is strange?

I probably wouldn't do it before being engaged, but after being married for nearly 5 years, I'm ready to go try on dresses again. I miss it! Chat Icon

It sure is jumping the gun a bit and I would think, definitely scare the average guy away.

A lot of people count their chickens before they hatch when they maybe shouldn't....not something I would do, but I have heard of others doing it. I won't judge ...maybe she was excited, misled, sad inside, overly hopeful, etc. If I don't know her or her exact situation, who am I to say?

That's what I was thinking. Maybe the guy in her life started talking casually about marriage and if that was a HUGE fantasy of hers, she decided to do some preliminary checking out of dress styles, etc.

I know for myself, I'm constantly looking at wedding this or that. Heck, John and I went together to the B/E that LIW hosted. Alot of people would Chat Icon that type of actions because I'm not divorced yet but we both know that we are going to be together and I enjoy having something to look forward to (even if it's a long range out). Plus prices have changed since I was last married. I'm a planner, so I wanted to know what I was in for in terms of vendors, etc.

Re: Do you think this is strange?

its a little odd but who am i to say anything, i had bought some baby clothes before getting preggers. although someone else on here said she made a myspace page for her unconceived baby so i guess we're both a little "odd"

but if her boyfriend isn't anywhere near ready, it is a little odd
