No. Just because it looks like they are on-line, doesn't mean they really are. My AIM auto-starts when I start the computer, and it's on all the time, so it often looks like I'm on-line, when I may not even be home (or the same state, even).

Nope. I keep my away message up until Im ready to chat. Sometimes, Im doing work, for work or Im busy with DS.
During the day, Im dowstairs on a laptop, however upstairs in the "office" we have a desktop and Im online 24/7 and my away message is up about 20 hours of the 24...LOL
The only one I joke around with is my SIL. If she;s on a while and didn't say HI, I find the biggest font possible and simply I.M. her with:
"WHATEVER"...LOL Always gets her attention.

totally. this is awful but sometimes at night when the phone rings at home, I see who it is and unless it's my mom or Dan's mom...I let the machine get it!

I am not even a little offended. I figure they are busy or in a rush- or maybe not even there at all. Sometimes if my work computer is turned on it looks like I am on IM.. but I am not.
Also - I don't often IM people to say hi unless I have some time to chat.
