Do you ever get nervous when home alone with the kids and someone comes to the door ??

Today, I had DD in my arms and my 3yo DS home and the bell rang....There was a guy at the door and a brand new black Charger in my driveway...We live on a hidden common driveway, kind of off the beaten path....I opened the door a little and asked " Can I help you?" ...The guy asked if there was someone around here renting rooms ....I just said "No sorry" and shut and locked the door...

This struck me as odd that someone in a brand new car was looking to rent a room in the first place, but even more that he randomly knocked on doors asking this when my house # is abundantly clear ...It really spooked me because really what would it have taken for him to shove me in my house and do whatever or god forbid take one of my DC's ..I made sure to write down the license plate #, he stayed in my driveway for about 2 minutes , assuming maybe looking at a map

Has this ever happened to anyone ? Usually I dont really think about it, but today was a little wierd and because we live on such a secluded block makes it worse...

THAT would creep me out and I don't get creeped out easily

I honestly try not to think about it b/c I'm alone with DS and the dog almost every night all night since that is when DH works

I freak out every time my doorbell rings....it's actually comical! I run to the phone and call my mom - I then hide us in the kitchen. I'm crazy I know!

I never answer the door when I'm home alone unless I am expecting someone of course. (even before DD was born).

well, I live in an apt, so it's not the same vulnerability.

But, when someone knocks (I would have to buzz someone up if I was expecting someone), I tiptoe over and look through the peephole to see if I want to open the door. I usually don't. I am not usually one to do that, but there are just so many crazies out there.

i always look out my window first, but htey usually see me looking out so then i field wierd if i dont answer, but i didn't several times because you never know who it might be.

It hasn't happened a lot, but I don't answer the door to unknown people when I am home alone w/ DD. I have spoken to people through the door e.g. "NO THANK YOU, GOODBYE," but I won't open it.

I don't get not answering the phone, though.

i don't answer the door when DH is not home unless i am expecting someone. even for deliveries, when i order something a signature is usually not required so i ignore the knocking and they leave it on the doorstep.

I feel no responsibility to answer my front door unless I am expecting someone. Usually its an annoyance or someone selling a stupid coupon book, so I just ignore it.

that happened to me about 2 years ago, a man came to my front door looking for directions to a pretty popular street.. i answered the window -- and wasn't very nice about it . I freaked because i figured he was up to no good.. It's amazing how far our minds go when we are alone with our children.. like hyperprotective mode.

That is just bizarre.....

Your road is not a road that someone would just turn down either....

I make a point of "locking us in" in the morning...

I very rarely open my front door to anyone if DH isnt home...or my neighbors arent out and about.

That must have been scary for you!

I hate when the bell rings and I'm home alone. I usually don't answer or look through the glass and shake my head.
One time, these guys were walking up and down the block with those big tubs of candy and ringing bells. One rang my bell and I stayed upstairs and didn't answer. I HEARD HIM TRY THE DOORKNOB!! Why in the world would he try the knob?! What would he have done if it were open! Still freaks me out!

That is really creepy and I have a feeling he was trying to see if you were home. If not, he was probably going to attempt to rob you. I would call the local preceint and report it. Other people may have done the same.

OMG! I would of freaked out!

I never answer my door when I'm home alone with the kids, unless its UPS ( I know both drivers that deliver) or my mailman.

Wow, I would have freaked!!

We have a large bay window where you can clearly see if our TV is on or if someone is home, so I feel bad/weird if I don't answer the door---when they can clearly see someone is home.

Last week, someone rang the bell at 8pm (DH was home, but in the basement) & it was some guy (w/ a badge) collecting signatures for some charity. I had DD in my arms as well.

I don't answer the door unless I am expecting someone or a package when I am home alone with the baby.

That does sound weird. I don't have any issues when someone calls and/or comes to the door when I am alone with DD and my mini Dachshund. Then again, I have several guns in my house and I know how to use them!

I always get nervous.. but I also have reason to. About a year ago there was a guy that was coming around "selling" magazines.. and he got a little creepy. I wouldnt open the screen door and then he asked to come in to use the phone, so I immediately shut the door. He ended up coming back and thats when I called the police.

99% of the time my front door is closed and locked.. and I always check to see who is outside.
