Re: Disney 2017

We just got back from Disney/Universal.

It was a relatively last minute trip that we attached to a trip DH took.

We went a little more budget this time - we rented a 2 bedroom time share at Legacy Vacation Club in Kissimmee. It was a bit dated and didn't have a ton of amenities, but we didn't care. We were there for the parks. It was clean and had a nice half indoor/half outdoor pool. DS loved the arcade too. I'd stay there again.

We've been a bunch of times and I have to say FP+ - along with my son getting a little older - has really changed the way we do the parks. I used to be militant about getting up early and getting as much done in the morning as possible. I've relaxed a lot on that. This trip we had leisurely in room breakfasts then headed to the parks 12-1ish, used our FPs in the afternoon, had a late lunch, then did standby late afternoon/evening after waits started to fall. We did any headliners like Mine Train (which I could not get a FP for) very late at night and didn't wait long at all. This worked really well for us but we're all night owls. The parks are still emptier in the morning but the evenings were fine too. I used to not be a fan of FP+ but I've totally changed my mind on that!

We did Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and both Universal parks. A few random thoughts:

MK - MK is just the best. There's nothing like it. I love all the classic rides. If you're not familiar with FP+ definitely get informed. FP+ is offered on rides that previously didn't have FP and that has increased waits. For example Pirates of the Caribbean's waits are on average double what they were prior to FP+.

A "cast member" came up to us in MK and offered us a FP to any ride if we played a game - we had to name 5 Disney movies with a one word title and we got a FP that we used for MT! It was so cool - it was the "magic" Disney is known for!

The food at the Plaza was very good if you're looking for a nice sit down lunch. (We're not buffet/all you can eat people.)

Epcot - If you like fruity alcoholic drinks you MUST try the Grand Marnier Slushie at the wine booth in France. Soooo good. I had always wanted to try it and finally did. (It wasn't so boozy that you wouldn't want to walk around drinking it with your kids.) They have a lemon one too.

DS loved the acrobats in China. Their showtimes should be on the times guide.

Do the Agent P mission if you have kids aged 5-10 ish that you want to entertain in World Showcase.

I did NOT like the new Soarin. I thought it looked very fake. The Eiffel Tower was literally curvy. We still had fun though.

We are sort of done with characters but we did do Baymax and Joy and Sadness. Joy and Sadness were a lot of fun and stayed in character throughout the meet and greet. Definitely see them if you know the movies. They are across from the Character Spot and for some reason their waits are never listed. We waited about 1/2 hour in the middle of the afternoon - probably our longest wait the entire trip. So you can probably go anytime.

Universal - I personally didn't care for Universal Studios. That's just me though - I don't care for simulator rides at all. My family enjoyed it. The Men in Black ride was fun. It's similar to Toy Story Mania at Disney. The Harry Potter section was INCREDIBLE but very crowded so it was hard to appreciate the details.

Island of Adventure was a little better. Anyone with young boys should definitely do IOA because the Marvel superhero characters were fantastic - interactive and fun with short waits.

Seuss Landing was cute.

Don't wait too long for Flight of the Hippogriff - the ride was SO short it was ridiculous.

The food at Universal was less innovative than it is at Disney and more "typical" - burgers, pizza, etc. I would plan shorter days for those parks and don't plan for more than one meal there, IMO.

Oh, and if you rent a car, Publix has a fantastic wine selection.Chat Icon

Enjoy everyone!

Great review!!! Sounds like so much fun!

Would you say Soarin' was scary? Debating on whether I should take my 5 yo on it.

Not at all. DS went on it for the first time around age 4 - as soon as he was tall enough.

That link has the dates from previous years that discounts were announced so that you can at least get an idea of when it's coming.

We just got back from our 10 day adventure. We had a mostly good time, though there were some definite highs and lows as with any trip. If anyone has questions about current conditions etc let me know!

Oh I'd love a recap lol.

Sure. Here's my review. We went for 10 days over Feb break and traveled with a group of 19. My immediate family is me, DH, and DS1- 5, DS2- 3, and DS3- 7 months. The rest of our traveling group ranged from 74 years down to 5 years. We had 6 day tix, not hoppers.

Accommodations- My family stayed the first two night at Pop Century because we flew down earlier than everyone else thanks to insane Feb break prices. Pop is nice, but the rooms are tiny. My kids love being at a Disney resort though and asked the rest of the week when we were going back to the hotel.

After those first two nights we stayed off property in a house with the rest of the group of 19. The house was amazing. 8 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms, amazing pool, movie theater room, game room, 3 washer and dryers, gym. Just awesome. It's called the Lake View Estate and if you have a big group it's a great place. About 5-10 minute drive from the Disney entrance.

Wed Feb 15- Arrival day, pool at Pop Century, dinner at Rainforest Cafe in Disney Springs. I'm so glad the new parking garage is done at Disney Springs. Driving there was a breeze. Park in the Lime garage if you're looking for shops like World of Disney, Lego, Once upon a toy etc.

Thurs Feb 16- Legoland. Took about 45 minutes to drive there. Super easy drive, but a lot of it is on a Jericho Tpke like road with lots of lights. We enjoyed the park, but we got a late start due to the 7 month old needing to eat right at park opening. That meant longer waits than we had hoped for on the first few rides. We will definitely have to go back sometime and do more things. Check out the Florida PTA site for a great deal on tix ($35). Do not need to be a member of any PTA to use.

My parents babysat my kids that night so DH and I could go to Jiko at AKL for dinner. This place is amazing. So delicious. The taste of Africa appetizer was so yummy.

Fri Feb 17- Day off to move from Pop to the house. We went to Disney Springs for lunch at TRex and shopping before house check in. I never realized that TRex and Rainforest menus are basically the same. Lesson learned- one or the other but definitely not both in one trip.

Sat Feb 18- MK (Fantasyland). The 8am park opening was a bit of a pain, but we made it early and got so much done in the first two hours. If you have any 8am openings try to get there right at 8. It's even better than a 9am because no one wants to get up super early. My kids loved Small World, Dumbo and Pooh. The bigger kids in our group (7 years-14 years) were bored after a few rides. My kids asked to go in the splash area near Dumbo and Barnstormer and I felt bad I didn't have extra clothes to let them. Next time I will remember that. Ate lunch at Be Our Guest, which has great food and ambiance, but the line to get in and pay is a hassle. Also, the kids portions are super tiny. I only ordered one meal for my boys to split because usually they are so big. But this one was miniscule and they were both hungry after.

Sun Feb 19- Epcot. Went to Test Track first thing which may have been a mistake because the road was wet from the night before and it didn't actually open until about 9:30. Wished I had run over to Frozen first because we didn't get to ride that at all. My 5yo LOVED test track, especially the part before the ride where you design the car. Also visited the Seas and Soarin. I agree that the new Soarin movie stinks. It's so distorted and not even remotely interesting. The pacing is all the same too. I like how in the Cali movie there were some fast and some slow parts. We used Rider Switch for this and if you plan on it be aware that it takes FOREVER to get through this ride even using the FP line. Easily 30 minutes for one group to get through. And there wasn't anything else for me to do with the littles because the wait for the Land boat ride was 45 minutes!!! Best part of the day was lunch at the counter service in Mexico. I love the shaded seating next to the lake and the food is pretty delish. We did Hoop Dee Doo for dinner which was great for all ages. If you arrive by car leave extra time to use the internal shuttle to get back to Pioneer Hall.

Mon Feb 20- Universal. Just me, my mom and my oldest DS went. Everyone else stayed at the house for pool time. We went mostly for the Harry Potter stuff. One thing I did like was the security check at Universal is so much easier b/c they use xray machines. Quick and easy, no unzipping and no creepy man pawing through my lady products. The HP area was amazing, but 5yo cried all the way through the Gringotts ride. Too intense for him, oops. Unfortunately that meant he was too scared to ride anything else that day so we just looked in the shops, had lunch and left. We did ride the Hogwarts Express both ways though and that was super cool. But put on your walking shoes because the queues are soooo long and there was no line. So we walked like a half mile each time just to get on the train.

Tue Feb 21- Back to MK for Adventureland and Tomorrowland. My kids love Pirates, Jungle Cruise, and Magic Carpets so we did those three and then had an early lunch at the Plaza. One of my favorites spots in MK. It's small and quiet and the food is good. Afternoon was in Tomorrowland and it was packed. We used our FP+ on Speedway, Buzz and Space Mountain. We wanted to do Astro Orbiter but the wait was too long. And my kids got stuck on People Mover with my parents while we were on Space Mtn. We also did Carousel of Progress which my kids had no patience for. Won't do that again for a few years.

My biggest gripe with this day was the darn parades. We got caught before lunch trying to cross Main St and then as we were leaving that afternoon the 3pm one was going. I hate the parades. You can't see anything unless you wait forever for it. It crowds the street like crazy. And they are so loud!!! Ugh.

Wed Feb 22- HS. My youngest DS got sick the day before, so I just took my older two DSs. We got a late start, but still managed to meet Chewie and Kylo Ren first thing with very little waits. We then met Buzz and Woody and used a FP for TSM. As we were heading to Muppets it started downpouring and when we came out it was full on monsoon. We decided to leave then as it was really hard for me with two kids and the rain and I felt bad for DH stuck with a sick baby alone in the house and no car. So this day was kind of a bust and honestly until the new stuff opens there I will probably skip this park. We ate outside the park on the way back to the house.

Thurs Feb 23- AK. We had a good day here. Everest first. Then we saw the Lion King show which is fabulous. We FP+ Safari and saw lots of animals. Then we took a stroll down the Pangani trail. At this point we had a lot of time to kill before a 1pm lunch, but not quite enough time to actually do anything else. So we found some quiet seating and had beers, lol. Tusker House was wonderful for lunch although character meals always stress me out a little because there's so much happening. We went to the dino area after lunch where my kids had a great time in the Boneyard play area. This is so great for the little ones.

Fri Feb 24- I ran the Princess 5K in the morning so we didn't head out to MK until after lunch time. This day was a total disaster. We arrived around 2. It was boiling hot and we walked through the parking because folding the stroller to get on the tram is a hassle. So we were tired before even entering. The park was so crowded and of course people were starting to line up for the stupid parade already. We went to Tom Sawyer island which was fun especially for active little boys. Then we went to Splash where we intended to use FP+ and Rider Switch to take my oldest on. But he and DH got stuck on the ride which terrified DS and made it take 45 minutes for them to get off. Of course, I didn't know they were stuck so I didn't want to wander too far with my other too. I needed to change the baby's diaper and the bathroom near Splash is the absolute worst mess for taking a double stroller in. Awful. We barely fit and they put the changing table right in the area where people queue for the stalls. We had an early dinner at Liberty Tree, which was quite nice. But after that I started having back pain from running so we decided to leave. We had intended to do a few more rides and stay for fireworks. Of course my kids were devastated and cried the whole way out of the park. Not the way I wanted to end the trip!

Travel- We flew Southwest. They were fine on the way down. I bought DH the early bird check in and he saved us seats. On the way back I bought it for all of us and we ended up in group B anyway, which didn't help us since family boarding goes before group B. I'm pretty mad I wasted $60 on that. Considering they get so many families I feel the boarding process is not family friendly at all. You shouldn't make people with infants and young kids wait for a bunch of adults with extra cash to burn to board first. I also didn't like how they require the birth certificate for the baby and make you stop at the check in counter to verify the infant. There was no point at all to online check in because we just had to do it again due to the infant.

Sorry it's so long! For our next trip I'm thinking less days at a monorail resort only going to MK and just letting the kids decide which rides we go on. There were several times my 3yo asked to ride something again and we just didn't have time. Part of that was being in a big group, but part of it was me being too rigid with what we "needed" to do. Hope everyone else has fabulous trips this year!

Question: which is better BOG lunch or dinner? Food wise.

Menu is the same - the difference is the meet and greet with Belle & Beast after dinner, that is not available at lunch.

I don't think the menu is the same. Maybe the kids menu is the same but for lunch it is mostly sandwiches. Dinner had a few different choices, like a pasta, pork, salmon, a veggie dish. You can look up menus to all Disney restaurants on their website. Lunch was way cheaper. We did lunch one year and dinner the next. Both are good but totally different.

Yes, completely different for lunch vs dinner. The menu options are not at all the same. Also, you only meet Beast at dinner. Belle is not there.

Depends where I am starting in the park and when my ADR's are. Some FP's are in the morning, some are later in the afternoon. Chat Icon

Has anybody had issues getting a fastpass for frozen ever after? That's the biggest one for us.

Is it an issue trying to get it for the beginning of your trip instead of the end (since if your onsite you can book your whole trip at the 60 day mark)

I had no issues at all, there were plenty of times available. It was the first FP I booked to make sure I got it!

Don't book your FP's according to each day in order, rank the rides and then book your FP's according to that. It's annoying that you're jumping all over the place when you're booking but it ensures you get everything you want. I booked Frozen, Mine Train, Soarin, Toy Story Mania, first in that order then continued going down my list. Got them all! Chat Icon
