Has anyone stayed at the Poly? Last time I stayed at the Contemporary and loved it but want to try another one this time.
We stayed at the Poly this past September and it was great. You can't beat the location. I also really loved the volcano pool. My only complaint was the beds - they were hard as a rock!

The beginning of December is one of my favorite times to go. You have to contend with Pop Warner and the parade taping, but after the parade taping ALL of the decor willl be up and Christmas is in full swing. Despite PW, reuinion, etc, crowds aren't bad. Just bear in mind that Pop Warner week is often blacked out from certain discounts. It doesn't bother me, apparently since I've done Pop Warner week twice

We are hoping to go in 2014, my oldest DD will be in 1st grade (my youngest still PreK.)
I'm on the fence about pulling from school...so if you could pick any time what would it be? Mind you im in NC, so my vacations are a little different than NY.
Loved Halloween...BUT I REALLY want to do Christmas time, I also really considering running a 1/2 marathon at some point too.
thank you for the suggestions!
We went for 4 nights this past December 7th to the 11th. It was great. Weather was nice, low crowds. The kids only missed 2 days of school. I pulled out early on Friday, and they missed Monday and Tuesday. We go often, so it was the perfect length of time for us.

My DH & I are hoping the year turns around for his job...and then we can start planning for 2014. I'm thinking sometime around Jan-Feb 2014...I'd hate to wait until Dec 2014 & I'm not sure Dec 2013 is realistic.

Do you know when PW week and the parade taping are for 2013? We're hoping to travel this year and were thinking about the beginning of Dec.

Pop Warner is actually late this year. Starts Dec 7. The parade taping is typically the first weekend of December

Does anyone have any experience driving to the parks but staying on Disney property? We're considering staying at the Art of Animation resort in a suite but I just don't want to deal with the buses (DD will still be in a stroller). We're thinking of renting a car but don't know if this will be just as much of a hassle.

I don't but some people really like to. One consideration is that if you have young children and you'll be spending most of your time at Magic Kingdom a car might not be as convenient as you think because at Magic Kingdom the parking lot is actually not adjacent to the park. You will have to take a boat or monorail from the TTC (where the lot is ) to Magic Kingdom. There can be long lines for this at the beginning and end of each day. Also, depending on where you parked, you may also need to get in a tram to get to your parking spot. I haven't done it, so I'm sure you'd love to hear from someone who has, but I feel like waiting for the bus, waiting for the tram, 6 of one half a dozen of the other.
One benefit of the car is that you can often park close to your room, whereas taking the buses they al drop you off at the same place and you have to walk back to your room.

Yes we have rented a car while staying at a value. It was fine, except that the MK is a pain in the butt since you have to park at the TTC and then take the bus or monorail over. If you get there at opening, you will have to take the tram from where you parked to the TTC since it's too far to walk. We usually took the resort monorail, the line was usually MUCH shorter than the one that went directly from TTC to the MK.

How did you book for 2014 already? Did you go directly thru Disney?

yup! my mom booked it... she called Fort Wilderness directly and booked the sight. Not sure why you wouldn't be able to book now...Its less than a year away... i would think a lot of people plan that far ahead!

I'm working with a travel agent and she said she wouldn't make the reservations until this summer.

oh... ok. hmm... maybe it depends on when in 2014 you're planning to go? We're going in February, so really early 2014... When my mom tried looking online, it said "no availablilty" at Fort Wilderness for the dates we were looking at....so she got nervous and called LOL they got her booked over the phone.

Aries, you can now book Room Only reservations for many dates in 2014. Package rates for 2014 won't come out until much later this year.
Agents will vary in how they handle this. I would do it differently, but she might be holding off because of the way Disney systems work. A Room Only and a Package are two totally different systems and it can be a bit of a pain to switch from one to the other so she probably just wants you to book into a package when the package is ready. There's a way around this, but your agent is correct that packages won't be out until the summer.

Ahh! This makes sense! We're not doing a package so my mom was able to just book the site early I guess...

Re: Disney 2014
We just came back yesterday.
We did 3 nights/4 days at Art of Animation. The Magic Express bus from the airport to resort was fantastic. The buses to the parks (we did Epcot and MK) made life so much easier. The only thing we used a car for was the morning we left, we did breakfast at Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary. We LOVED both parks and our kids had a great time. We stay only a few nights because we spend the rest of the week down at my inlaws in Boca Raton. I highly recommend Fast Pass for Soarin'. DH and I LOVED it. Actually, whichever rides you can get a Fast Pass for, DO IT! It makes it so much easier! For everything else, we had a special assistance pass because of my DD (she's special needs), so, we were pretty much fast passed through everything except shows.
If you have any questions, FM me! I HIGHLY recommend Art of Animation. Very kid friendly! My inlaws stayed at the All Star and they really weren't fans of it. They said it was "OK".
