So I would be a liar if I said I wasn't freaking out now :(

It's nothing to freak out about... I ate a lot of stuff during my pregnancy other people wouldn't go near... but if there was something my gut was telling me not to eat or to stay away from I did. I think we all know soda, diet or not isn't good for us so when we come on here to ask questions like this we already know what we want to/should do. Is it the healthiest thing to be having while pregnant? No, obviously not but I am sure your baby is fine. If you're uncomfortable with it or if something isn't sitting right with you about drinking it just stop now. In the first trimester I drank a decent amount of Root Beer (not Barq's) because it eased my stomach when I felt queasy but once I didn't need it any more I cut out soda altogether and even since having DS haven't started drinking it again. I ordered it once and it tasted horrible to me! So now that I'm back on WW not having that soda craving is helping so much more! Chat Icon

So that was long winded... but really don't worry, stop drinking it now if you are concerned and swap in juices, iced tea and then let yourself have one every once in a while if you're REALLY REALLY craving it.

Diet soda

I don't drink diet soda at all - PG or not - because I hate the taste. I do drink Coke though and have been throughout this first trimester. It's the only beverage that doesn't make me feel sick. Same with when I was PG with DS and the doctor told me it was OK but to try not to have more than 1 per day. As important as I know water is, I cannot stomach it. I've mixed it into juice to get it in.

I think my biggest problem is I'm really not drinking much of anything which is never good. I can't wait till the nausea goes away so this isn't an issue anymore. :(

Re: Diet soda

I drink a ton of water along with V-8 Fusion Juice. But if I want or feel like a soda I go for it. I believe Diet soda is bad for you and it's filled with chemicals...I go for a regular soda and when I do the twins love it..I can feel them fluttering around like crazy!!! As long as it's in moderation you are fine!! Go grab that soda!!! I love a Cherry pepsi!!

Personally, I wouldn't touch diet soda with a ten foot pole, pregnant or not.

Even though there are no "proven" side effects, my own belief is that chemicals can not be doing any good to your body.

Ditto. Stop drinking it if you can!

I think stating your opinion is fine on these boards but demanding OP stop drinking it (EXCLAMATION POINT) is quite unnecessary.

To the OP... You're totally fine! Don't freak out. Enjoy your pregnancy and just have stuff in moderation. Congrats!

Sorry you think it's unnecessary. She asked for an opinion, so i gave mine. I wasn't demanding op to do anything. I guess that's just your interpretation of my use of the exclamation point.Chat Icon

Don't freak out. If you think you're drinking too much, cut down a bit.

If you're worried about the effects of diet soda, there's a ton of research out there on both sides of the spectrum so you can make your own decision based on what you feel is best for you and your baby. I think the best advice anyone can say in any situation (what you drink or eat, etc) is do some research then form your own opinion about it. What's best for someone else doesn't necessarily have to be best for you.

Re: Diet soda

I wouldn't drink it pregnant or not. But I don't eat or drink anything with any kind of artificial sweetners at all.

Don't freak. Do some research. If you feel comfortable continuing to drink it, then go for it. If you decide to stop, that's fine too. But freaking out will accomplish nothing Chat Icon

Re: Diet soda

I agree with those who said do your own research, I also want to add to talk to your doctor, or even ask your doc for a recommendation for a nutritionist who specializes in pregnancy. It may help ease your mind and help you make the best choices for you :)

Re: Diet soda

If you want to be talked out of ever drinking it again read the book "Skinny B*tch" You will have a hard time ever drinking diet anything again...... Aspartame turns into formaldehyde in your body... that's all I'm going to say!!!

I will say if you read the book, stop half way....it's too rigid in the end, I in no way would ever be able to follow all their recommendations...Vegan...no way!

I actually did turn Vegan after reading that book. It actually wasn't that hard and I felt great. If anything, it really made me realize the importance of avoiding processed foods.

Now since becoming PG I flew off the rails a little bit. I kinda just eat what I want (in moderation) Chat Icon

DO NOT freak out! First of all, MOST OBs say everything in moderation, with a few exceptions. I have been drinking diet snapple occasionally this pregnancy. I specifically asked my OB about artificial sweeteners in crystal lite etc. and she specifically said even those in moderation are FINE.

Everyone's experience is different and every individual decides what works for them. While I appreciate that you asked and people responded and shared their own personal opinions, I think it is extremely condescending for anyone to tell you to stop something completely unless they are your doctor. Not everyone did this on here, many just shared their own experience and what they chose to do, but do not listen to anyone but your doctor and your own decision-making when you choose what works for you and your pregnancy. Just my two cents. But I repeat, DO NOT freak out! You are fine!!!!

Diet soda

Crashing but I did it when I was pregnant in moderation. I was a diet soda addict and diet snapple addict. I also had GD. DD was born fine BUT I will not do it the next time.

DH and I used to go through a 2 liter of diet soda in 2 days easy. Sometimes even more than that. We gave up diet soda a few months ago and honestly I feel so much better. I really didn't realize how bad all that fake stuff is. You think it's better because it has no calories but really it is not. I feel that regular soda is just as bad too. All that HFCS and calories is not good either.

I would avoid it like the plague pregnant or not. Aspartme is awful stuff. Years ago, I got blinding headaches after drinking it. Try some selzter with fruit slices, great alternative !

I can see that!! Lol people have very strong feelings about this! I drank it occasionally when pregnant with dd and she's fine but lately without even realizing I found myself drinking it more than I should have because DH drinks it and there's always a bottle in the fridge. I'm glad I realized and will def try harder to avoid drinking it so frequently.

Do NOT freak out. You are fine! There is always a new "evil" food that people scare you into thinking is the worst thing ever. Don't chug diet coke all day, but do not think for a second you are hurting your baby!

Re: Diet soda

As someone with a bad stomach, i try to always avoid artificial sweeteners while pregnant or not. Its actually one of the first questions a Gastro doctor will ask you.

i would not freak out about it! There are other things i dont totally avoid that are on these "bad lists". I still have cold cuts. Chat Icon

Diet soda

I watched a documentary about all the chemicals in our food and they talked about Diet Soda and the artifical sweetners in it like aspartame- they can cause serious health problems- diabetes, memory loss, cancer... A lot of the studies are inconclusive, and it appears that you really have to drink A LOT of it (like everyday) to have any serious side effects. But the risk to me isn't worth it. I am sure once in a while you're fine, and I don't think it will harm baby. But I would cut back if you can. They also say that your body doesn't really know what to do with artificial sweeteners so even if something says "0 calories" Your body still stores them as if they are calories. In all honesty, you are better off drinking regular soda with real sugar because your body "knows" what it is and will burn it off more quickly.

Please read Dr. Mercola's article on aspartame. It's not good for you or the baby.
