Did you get a bassinet?
Is it really necessary to have one?
People have told me they are useful, but I can't see registering for something that I don't want.
How long do you really keep the babies in your room?
Can they start out right in the crib in the next room?
What's the difference between the pack and play and a bassinet if the pack and play has a little bassinet on top? Is the mattress better?

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
It really is your own personal choice. We had one and DD slept in it for 3 months. I just felt more comfortable with her in my room in the beginning. Now she sleeps in her crib and had no problem with the transition.
I have a pnp with a bassinet and we keep it in the den. I don't think the mattress is any better but it is a lot bigger than the bassinet I had.

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
We had a bassinet. I think it was cozier than the PNP. It was also narrower and was an easier fit next to my bed. I had a C-section and it may have been tough to always go into the baby's room when I was still stiff from sleep. We put the baby in the crib early but we continued to use the bassinet some of the time. For a while, he was in he crib at night but transferred to the bassinet when DH left for work. That worked out great.

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
Funny there is this post...I didn't want one cause I got the pack n play with the bassinet feature so to save I never registered for one. I got one from my friend at the shower that said "you need one" well I put it together today and it looks great! I love it! I can't wait to have the baby in there sleeping next to me and rocking her. I would never had gotten one but so glad I don't have to lug the PNP around the house. It is nice to have the bassinet.

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
Not getting one. The baby is going in her crib in her own room as soon as it is set up. Until then, she will use the bassinet in the Pack N Play.

Respectly, I totally disagree.
We used ours for 3+ months and DS could have still fit in it when we transitioned him to the crib.
It was great to have him in the room with us at first and I didn't even breastfeed!

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
We got a PNP with a built in bassinet.
I had planned a vaginal delivery, but wound up needing an emergency c-section.
Having the baby in our bedroom turned out to be the best thing.

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
We got the PNP with the built in bassinett. We used it until he turned 7 weeks and outgrew the bassinett. (But I had a large baby) Now (at 9 months) we are using it again in our living room as a play pen. It's also great to travel with!!!!!!!!

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
I was set against it as being a waste. DH wanted it for the baby to stay with us in our room.
I am glad I gave in and got it.
I had a c-section and was BFing. Waking up every 2 hours and feeling like I was ripping everything inside me trying to get up, I was glad I just had to lean over to pick DS and BF him.
We used it until he was 2.5 months. He outgrew it in weight and heigth.
I will use it again with #2.
We have a PNP in our LV because we have 2 dogs so I wasn't going to move the PNP back and forth. The bassinet was also small enough to fit on my side of the bed and it was perfect.

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
We are not getting one; the nursery is right across the hall from us, and it's not even a hall, more of a foyer, so right to the crib. It's a personal choice.

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
I don't think it is necessary but they are nice and work for some people.
I am using the PNP next to our bed at night and she will nap in her crib during the day so she gets used to it in her room also.

Yes and our DD was in until she was 3.5 months. I was paranoid not to have her inches away from me This time around we are breaking it out too

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
No you don't have to have one BUT it IS helpful depending on your situation, comfort level etc. Some people are perfectly comfortable putting their newborns directly into their crib - I didn't for comfort reasons and BF reasons - but you can if you are okay with it.
I would highly recommend one if you plan to BF. I didn't buy one and planned on using the pack n play bassinet for a short time - but then I ended up with a surprise c-section and my parents and DH thought it would be easier if we had a bassinet right next to the bed (we couldn't do that with our pack n play not enough room where our bed is). So they got me one before I left the hospital.
If you plan to BF it is so helpful, and even easier if you have a section. I could reach in and pull her out BF and put her right back in without getting out of bed at night - so it was easier to go right back to sleep. The one I had went to 18lbs - so you could keep the baby in your room longer if you feel that is right for you. DD stayed with us until 5 months - much longer than we planned b/c DH didn't get to put up the monitor for a while. But that was what worked for us.

Re: Did you get a bassinet?
I didn't want one or plan on getting one... but my SIL just gave me her used one a few days ago. If I have a c-section it may come in handy in the middle of the night. I would prefer to put straight into his own room though.

No, you don't "need" a bassinet. When I had my DD 4 years ago, I didn't register for one- I didn't think I needed it.
I had the crib in her room, the pack and play in my room and a dome sleep/play thing.
I was all for putting her in her crib in her own room, until we brought her home. I couldn't sleep with her so far away from us. The pack and and play wasn't great either, it didn't seem too comfortable. The sleep/play dome was on the floor, and I couldn't keep bending down because of the unexpected c-section.
So, I went out and got a bassinet. I got it at Babies-R-Us, and it cost about $100. I got a unisex one, and will be using it soon for baby #2.
The baby can sleep in most of them until about 15 lbs. For us, that was a little over 3 months, some babies who are smaller, can stay in longer.
Ours rocked and also had wheels, so I could bring it into other areas of the house.
I would register for one. If you get it then great, if not, and you decide you want one, you can get it when baby is born. Also, you can get one second hand- Kidstuff in Lindenhurst and Once Upon A Child in Massapequa always have nice ones.

I registered for a pnp with a bassinet feature. For the first few weeks, the baby is going to sleep at night in that which will be right next to our bed.
