Did you eat before glucose screening?
I failed the one hour with DD1 3 years ago (but passed 3 hour). I'm almost positive I ate something light before the appt and that the lab said I could when I called to make an appt. Fast forward to this pregnancy. I got my script from my OB today and the instructions say NOT to eat for 12 hours beforehand. Now I'm wondering if that's why I failed the first time since I didn't fast.

Did you eat before glucose screening?
I was told no eating after midnight for both. Failed both and only by a very small margin on each. Sucks.
ETA: When I got to the lab, they said to me: You fasted, right?

Re: Did you eat before glucose screening?
I had breakfast about 2 hours before the 1 hour and I passed. They told me to eat breakfast like normal and only to fast for 1 hour before drinking the drink.

Re: Did you eat before glucose screening?
I've taken a few glucose tolerance tests and I was told to fast every single time by both the lab and whatever doctor I was seeing at the time. They want to see your baseline fasting glucose number, how it goes up after you drink the sugar drink, then how your body processes the glucose over the course of 1-3 hrs. You should be fasting at least 12 hrs before the test.
ETA - I wasn't even allowed to have water. Nothing until after the test was over.

I did not have to fast either time before. I had a normal breakfast, went for the test and passed both times.

No, I did not eat from the night before. I made sure to go to the lab first thing in the AM.

Re: Did you eat before glucose screening?
I did the 1 hour glucose twice (b/c I was high-risk for GD). I ate breakfast before both tests and I passed both tests. The 1-hour glucose test is not a fasting test.

Re: Did you eat before glucose screening?
I specifially asked the Dr and my lab and they both said I could eat before. Which I was glad of because I tend to pass out from blood draws if I don't eat something I just had a hard boiled egg and some almonds. I didn't want to eat anything with sugar or even carbs just in case. Just protein. I passed

The 1 hr test is a fasting test. Actually, all glucose tests are fasting tests. I've been seeing endocrinologists for a while and I have had GD twice and I'm always told to fast before any glucose test. In fact, the first thing Quest labs asked me when I went in for them was if I fasted and for how long.

Re: Did you eat before glucose screening?
Thanks for all the responses. It's crazy how the instruction varies from dr to dr and lab to lab. I'm going to follow my dr's no eating instructions this time around and hope for a different response.

It seems it depends upon the doctor. With ds1 I was scheduled for 3:00. They said no problem eating. So I did.
With ds2 as I was scheduling, the girl was trying to schedule me for early morning but I wanted late afternoon so I could do it during my lunch hour. She just said to be careful not to eat too much sugar or carbs. I had a light lunch around 1:00. Drank the syrup at 2:00 and had the blood draw at 3:00.
Passed both times.

Did you eat before glucose screening?
No but usually you're allowed to (as long as it's not carb-y / sugary) -- at least for the 1 hour. With the 3 hour you have to fast.
I went in so early to do the 1 hour that I didn't eat anything.
ETA: Quest asked me too if I had fasted beforehand but I know people who have taken the test through their doctors and no such restriction is placed on them.

That's not actually true. When I took the test the first time, I didn't know I was having it and the dr said that eating b'fast wouldn't affect it. The second time, my dr specifically told me to eat normally beforehand. The point of the 1-hour test is to see how your body handles sugar under normal circumstances.
I'm not sure why some labs/drs tell you to fast, but in general, the 1-hour glucose test is non-fasting. A healthy person w/o GD should be able to pass without altering anything in your diet.

I've never had a single doctor that said it was okay to eat before the glucose test. All of the labs I've been to as well the endos and OBs specifically said to fast. It was even right on the script for the bloodwork.
Guess it depends on your MD.

This is what my doctor told me and I passed with no problems. Mine was later in the day so I ate breakfast and an early lunch.
