Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal?

I am a new mommy and this scares me to death - that there are adults out there that would not speak up for these innocent children (to law enforcement) or stop what they saw. How do they look at themselves in the mirror every day? They too should be punished. As a teacher, my job would be in jeopardy if I never reported anything I perceived to be assault on a child, nevermind actually saw! Ughhh - disgusting

Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal?

I have a 9 year old son, the very idea that a freakin full grown pedophile pervert could perform anal sex on another boy close to his age makes me want to vomit. Cannot read anymore. As my DH said to his best friend, I don't care how close we are, if this was you, I would turn you in without blinking an eye. How can this effer and others who knew live with themselves? Sick sick

Why didn't the eyewitnesses call 911 the second that they saw this man doing this stuff, then physically remove him from the boys (if physically able to, I wouldn't be able to but another man might) to insure that the boy wasn't being hurt for one more second? Can you imagine what was going through the young boys minds, seeing someone walk by and thinking "omg someone saw, someone is going to help me and stop this" but then the witness keeps going

How can you walk past, see something so horrible happening and just walk away and go to your supervisor who obviously did nothing?

AND, okay so they messed up and didn't stand up and do the right thing by rescuing the boys right then and there while this was happening to them and told their supervisor, obviously the supervisor did NOTHING because the man was still there. Why wouldn't you go to police then?

They reported it like you would report a leaky faucet in the men's room . . . just alert your supervisor and go on with your pathetic day. Tell your supervisor, you don't see him picking up the phone and calling police? GO to the police station and follow up. . . do NOT REST until the pervert is in police custody. . . .i don't understand this at all!!!

I just read a NY Times Op-Ed describing the sound one witness heard before he saw him in the act and it made my stomach turn. HOW in God's name he didn't call 911 at that moment is beyond comprehension to me. I truly hope they prosecute EVERYONE who had any knowledge of this and didnt report it.

I've been following this on NPR and NYT. Paterno will be fired. BTW the people who saw something did report it to their superiors. It was TPTB that mishandled it and covered it up, including campus police.
I always felt that Coach Paterno was a man of great integrity and I am horrified and disgusted that he may have allowed something like this to be swept under the rug. I'm trying to reserve full judgement until more details and facts come out about his involvement/knowledge.

How did he allow anything to be swept under the rug? Why should he be fired? He did everything he should have done given what he knew. A graduate assistant told Paterno that he saw Sandusky in the locker room with a young boy and that there seemed to be something strange going on... not that he was giving oral or anal sex, not that anything wrong was ACTUALLY happening. Paterno was told something by someone else and reported the possible problem to his bosses. He didn't see anything and cover anything up. He reported what someone saw - to him it was heresay. He's the football coach, not the President or VP or Trustee. He can't investigate any allegations. He did what he could based on what he knew. Why should he be fired for that? According to the PA Police Commissioner, he did everything he was legally abided to do...he's not getting fired, and he shouldn't be fired.

Anyone that was an eyewitness or a supervisor of an eyewitness that was told about the incidences should be fired. And eyewitnesses and supervisors should all be charged with not reporting it to the authorities.

The whole thing is disgusting. ABSOLUTELY disgusting!

I've just read the indictment report. Paterno was told there was sexual activity and that's what he reported, but it seems like it was a game of chinese whispers - each supervisor's testimony gets less and less extreme as you go up the chain of command. I think the real fault lies with the AD and the VP in charge of campus police. Their testimony is all over the place.

It's easy to look at this story in hindsight and say so and so should've done X. But the reality is there is a chain of command that McQueary (the original eyewitness) and Paterno did adhere to. Paterno is revered as a god at PSU (by the way, class of '98 here) and has, in over 40 years of coaching, pretty much always shown himself to be honest and dignified, so there's no surprise that people are disappointed. But he fulfilled his professional obligation to report to his superiors. It's really a question of moral obligation and I believe that the situation would've looked very different to him (and possibly McQueary) at the time.

That's not to say that I'm not also sickened by what Sandusky did, not to mention the lack of action on the part of the AD and the VP.

Maybe I'm not up on campus policy but if you see a CRIME being committed PARTICULARLY AGAINST A CHILD, feel free to contact the police. NOT the campus police.

This is no better than the Catholic church covering up their sexual abuse scandals & allowing child molestation to continue.

I blame the eyewitnesses more than I blame Paterno. Everyone had a responsiblity but for someone who was witnessing a crime, they need to report it.

I'm so obsessed with this situation because I can't get over that no one did anything & swept it aside like it was no big deal.

I agree. Who witnesses a sex act on a child and doesn't IMMEDIATELY intervene???? What kind of adult walks away and then makes a report at some later point in time?

Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal? (updated)

Honestly, when you see and are told about a child being anally raped in a shower by a 58 year old man, the correct "chain of command" really needs to go out the window and the REAL police (not campus police) need to be contacted. I don't see how Paterno, McQueary, or anyone else could have seen this differently. Even if Paterno was just told the bare minimum- 58-year old man, 10 year old boy, shower- any reasonable thinking human being would do something more than just tell his boss and drop it.

I find it horrifiying that no one tried to find out anything about this boy after the incident. They didn't try to find out if he was ok. They didn't even know his name. They just had their meetings in the days after the incident, told Sandusky that he couldn't bering young boys on to campus anymore (i.e. don't bring your perversion on campus) and dropped it. This whole thing is disgusting.

So of course I had to read more, as sickened as I am, I can't pretend this is not someone's reality. I also said WT eff..where is the info on what this asst coach who caught him - CAUGHT HIM IN THE ACT OF HAVING ANAL SEX WITH A 10 YEAR OLD BOY - did in the moment? Did he intervene?? Apparently not. How? How can you not go in there and stop the hell that was going on for that boy???

And to make matters even worse, not that any child should ever be subjected to this, but these were underpriviliged boys being mentored. So they either have no father, a father working 2-3 jobs, a disabled father, a father in prison, etc. Boys in desperate need of some guidance and direction, entrusted by their parent, grandparent, guardian, single Mom working 2-3 jobs, etc. and you take them and instead you use them in the most horrible way possible??!?

I read one of the stories and a reader shared that he was sexually abused by his own grandfather many many years ago. He actually said he was envious of people who were later killed by their abusers bc at least the horror ends, he relives it very often. Can you imagine what these boys live with? I'm beyond sick and angry over this.

ETA: it is clear to me that all of the witnesses and such involved in this are so blinded by the football legacy and the football culture in the schools in our country. NO ONE wanted to screw up Paterno or Penn States rep. it was more scary to do that than to SAVE CHILDREN FROM BEING RAPED.

there are really no words to describe how completely horrified and enraged I am by this.

That's what I was thinking too, not only were they kids, but AT RISK YOUTH who, if anybody needs guidance, they do...completely used and abused. The worst part is that no matter what punishment these evil-doers get will still pale in comparison to the lives of these kids. "Sandusky spent three decades at Penn State running the defense and was once considered Paterno's likely successor. The charges against him cover the period from 1994 to 2009.

Sandusky, who is married and has six adopted children with his wife, Dottie, retired in 1999 but continued to use the school's facilities. University officials said Sunday they were moving to ban him from campus in the wake of the charges."Article

I completely agree.

And I'm sorry but the fact that "Joe Pa" is all of a sudden retiring effective immediately at the end of the season tells me there's way more to this and his involvement somehow is damning.

I am NOT saying he abused anyone but I do feel he must have played some kind of role (whether it was turning a blind eye, not telling anyeone sooner - who knows if the dude they're saying told him, is really the first person to have ever told him??).
