my dad sent me a text that according to some meteorology site we are in for a hefty blizzard between February 8-10. giving us between 30-40 inches of snow.

I am praying that this is all hogwash!!

Can they really tell the weather that far in advance? I'm not going to get pissed off about it.... yet.

ETA: Though I guess february 8th is in 10 days and most sites give a 10 day forecast. Just not sure how accurate it is.

did anyone else hear about a potential blizzard?

I doubt they can tell that far in advance.

It would be really weird since that is the same time as Nemo last year with that amount totals.

I doubt they can confidently predict that far out. Looks like the media outlets are just looking to hype something up.

I saw this on FB yesterday. Apparently it is coming from the Euro model....which is usually most accurate but has been somewhat off this year. They are calling it "Snowmaggeden" Chat Icon Those were the correct date 2/8-2/10

From Rich Hoffman's FB page:

Just an FYI- ECMWF (euro) model has been off most of this winter. Stop focusing on Feb 8th to 9th it's so far away. Focus on Feb 4-6th. GFS has been better all winter. Look at this - http://models.weatherbell.com/gfs/2014013012/east/gfs_6hr_snow_east_25.png

I follow Hudson Valley Weather on Facebook- it's this guy who's entirely self-taught- but he gets it right a lot of the time. He has said something about a potential something on 2/4 or so but said it's too soon to know.

They're saying there's POTENTIAL for a big storm because the subtropical jet will get going and that will cause there to be more moisture with these storms next week and that can bring with it a LOT of snow. There's supposed to be more cold air to work with after these 40's this weekend so that's why they're saying there's POTENTIAL for a big storm but no one in their right mind is actually predicting it.

I know there's been a picture of a model being floated around FB that has people in a panic but that's really just a bunch of bull.

Oh and just an FYI, all a blizzard is when there's a lot of wind blowing snow around causing white out conditions. You don't actually have to have a lot of snow to cause a blizzard, it can be less than a foot. So two different things when one says blizzard versus a BIG STORM.

There is also the POTENTIAL that I might loose my shit on my boss today and quit my job. There is always that POTENTIAL.
But I'm not banking on it quite yet.

Last week I heard we were going to have a massive blizzard this weekend so I don't take anything too seriously this far in advance.

Did you hear it might snow this month?
I heard that sometime in the month of February we may or may not get a blizzard, might possibly get a snow storm, could seriously get a light dusting of snow or may have the potential for some rain.
True story.

did anyone else hear about a potential blizzard?

I believe the Euro model completely correctly predicted Hurricane Sandy's path a few weeks in advance, so I wouldn't totally dismiss them!

ehh, Feb 8-10th isn't so far away...10 day forecasts are common...might be off but if they are predicting a possibility of something big I'm sure we can expect SOMETHING. might not be as big as the hype but I'm sure more snow is in our future.

Re: did anyone else hear about a potential blizzard?

People at work have been talking about this. 3 feet of snow seems to be the consensus but they are divided about whether it's on Tuesday or Saturday. I'm seriously so sick of this sh#! I know it's a long term forecast but of course I'm freaking out. Between the potholes and the time off work and shoveling and the freezing cold - it just seems like it's every other day without a break.

It better not be the 8th. It's my daughters first birthday party.
