DC has tummy issues - please help!
DD is 5 years old and is having issues when she uses the bathroom. She is gassy, she seems to go kind of often, and her BMs vary so much- sometimes they seem ok, but sometimes they are just mucous, and then there is everything in between.
I'm worried!
I know I need to take her to a doctor - but I'm not sure who to call - a pediatric gastroenterologist? Our allergist? Nutritionist?
Any advice/Doctor recs would be so helpful.
I am considering just trying to eliminate dairy, gluten, etc from her diet (one at a time, etc)....but I feel like a doctor's input would be helpful obviously since I am not an expert!
TIA

Re: DC has tummy issues - please help!
I would start with the pedi gastro... Sounds like it could be IBS or a food intolerance... You can try a food journal and see if you can find a connection.

I would see a gastro before starting eliminations. If they want to test for celiac she has to have gluten in her system.

I would also add a probiotic. My DS takes one and I feel like it helps

crashing but mucous to me is no IBS or allergy. does she have pain? bleeding? urgency to go?
I would start with Peds not an allergist etc, if she has anything mentioned in my post

Re: DC has tummy issues - please help!
Last year my son kept getting diarrhea, I took him to a pediatric gi, they ran a bunch of tests (blood and stool) and his gluten allergy test came back off the charts. The doctor wanted to do a biopsy to confirm celiac but we thought the procedure was too invasive for a 2.5 year old and the blood test was good enough evidence for us. We put him on a probiotic after the gi suggested it (culturelle, which helped) and put him on a gluten free diet. Symptoms improved a lot! If you need a recommendation for a pediatric gi, I really liked the one we saw, dr. Guevarra from good Sam pediatrics in babylon.

Re: DC has tummy issues - please help!
Thank you so much, everyone, for your responses!
I would call my ped, but I feel like my pediatricians never really know anything. (I am considering switching, but that is another post!)
I think I will call a ped. gastro tomorrow - I have heard good things about Dr Guevarra and that office, so will probably call them.
Thank you!!!

Mucous is a HUGE sign of an allergy.... My son had it with his MPSA... It is also a sign of IBS... I have suffered with that for years.... PEdi GI is the way to go. Regular pedi will probably suggest it

My Dd's pediatric gastro is amazing. Im not sure where you are located, but he's in Mineola. Highly recommended.
That's where I would go first

Re: DC has tummy issues - please help!
Sounds like what my daughter went through - she was diagnosed with celiac, but there are several other things it could be.
A pediatric GI is the way to go, and I wouldn't eliminate any foods before you go. You need her body to producing antibodies to the food for accurate blood test results.
It also may be helpful to keep a food & BM journal, kinda strange, lol, but it could show a pattern of what she eats and how her body reacts.
We used Dr Gold with Good Sam, but it could take a while to get an appointment with him.
We've also seen Dr Sahn with NSLIJ, and he was good, too, but not my favorite personality wise.
I found both those doctors to be extremely knowledgable and very up to date with changes in medicine, Dr Gold is a bit more personable though. Good luck!
