Daycare bottle propping
I've been happy with the daycare my 6.5 month old has been at since 12 weeks. I try to not to overanalyze everything since I realize it is not individual care and overall he is very happy and well taken of. And I do love his teachers.
I usually do not see his main teachers when I pick him up because they leave at 3:45 and depending on the day I get there between 4 and 4:30. Usually the manager is the one running the baby room. Today she had my DS on the boppy with a bottle propped with a blanket. First of all, it was too early for him to eat. She said he was fussy, but it wasn't even 3 hours since his last bottle. I think they just wanted him quiet. Second, I do not want him with a bottle prop. I'm usually very nice, but I lost it, in a calm way (I work in a school so I try to express my concerns in as productive manner as I can but I was upset). I let them know I do not want that and they were like really why? They claimed they do not do it all the time and there 2 new babies who needed to be fed too (at the moment they were in swings). And one of his main teachers was on vacation. I explained it can lead to ear infections. Aside from he has reflux. I understand there 2 new babies in the room but it's their responsibility to staff the room appropriately then, which I said.
Sorry if this is long. Just looking for support. And if I overreacted at all. I've been feeling good about being back at work and my daycare decision, but this made me upset today.

Daycare bottle propping
I would be very annoyed if they propped a bottle for my DS. I am pretty sure that is against regulations.

Daycare bottle propping
I am almost positive that is against state regs. The daycare my kids go to never prop bottles. I would be very annoyed, not only by the bottle propping but with the fact that the director questioned me. I am the parent, unless I am telling you I want you to feed my kid rat poison, don't question me.

Re: Daycare bottle propping
I will address it in writing tomorrow regarding the bottle propping. And yes you girls were right. I checked the NYS regulations and it is prohibited. I will be letting them know.

You did not overreact at all. That would really bother me. Daycare teachers (particularly of infants) need to be able to multitask. You had every right to speak up.

I'd also be upset about the bottle propping.
But eating early I'd let slide. Maybe your baby was hungry early.

Re: Daycare bottle propping
Yeah, I was more annoyed at the lack of communication with the feedings times. I was bothered at the time. But now I realize that's not a big deal.
I'm just not happy with how the manager handled the situation. She was the one who propped the bottle. And didn't think it was a big deal. I found out this morning that the manager ended up calling his teacher at home later to basically reprimand her about the situation. Of course I can't know for sure, but I doubt his main teachers have ever done that.
I've been so happy with his teachers and care overall. Definitely not happy with the management.

I think it's a bit alarming that the manager doesn't know the state regulations. I'm sure they could get in big trouble over that.

Re: Daycare bottle propping
I never gave it a second thought about propping bottles. I used to do it all the time never knew it was a big deal not to do this with DS being my second it was tremendous help when I propped the bottle and then do something else. so daycare doing would not bother me at all. is everyone saying that's against state regulations cause I never knew that.
Also the state law is 1 teacher to 4 kids so if there is one person covering 4 kids I feel they do the best they can
ETA: ok I read up on it a little bit. I will say I never propped the bottle when DS was in a crib or laying flat and it was mostly when he was at the point that he could hold the bottle himself and he was always in a strapped chair. I still don't see propping be that bad of a thing and I have no guilt doing it.

I propped bottles all the time with DD as well. She was up every 2 hours all night long for months . It saved my sanity. Nothing bad ever happened.

Re: Daycare bottle propping
For the record I didn't prop it with a blanket or towel or anything that could smother her. It was this type of device...made specifically for bottle propping...like in this picture.

I would be very upset about that. You are paying them to take care of your child. They shouldn't be propping bottles.

It is definitely against regulations. I wouldn't be pleased. They should be staffed so that each baby gets personally fed a bottle. IMO if you choose to bottle prop your own baby that's fine. but in a daycare setting its againt the rules.

This is how I feel too. I know my parents propped my bottles and I turned out fine. The issue here is that it is against the regulations, which would bother me.

what happens if a baby doesn't want anymore bottle when it is propped? I have never done it so I am clueless - but I feel like it would be hard for them to stop eating if they wanted too? the little ones at least.

This is one major reason why it's bad--babies have choked to death because they can't stop the flow.

Yes, I didn't want to be the one to say it but babies have died this way. They can choke, it's really not a good idea to do this.
