Daycare and Bottle Weaning (Very Resistant)

I know I am running a little late with the bottle weaning and I wanted to know how those of you with DCs in daycare handled bottle weaning. My DD is already 14 months old and very resistant to giving up the bottle (for milk--she drinks water from a sippy or little teacup) and being at daycare kind of complicates things even more. How did you get your DC to give up the bottle?

Just take it away cold turkeyChat Icon

My DS was in daycare at that age and I think they really helped him with his sippy cup

Re: Daycare and Bottle Weaning (Very Resistant)

My DD is 25 months old... and we got her off the bottle 2 weeks ago.

My day care didn't think it was an issue as much as I did. DD absolutely refused to drink milk from any other cup and when I spoke to my pediatrician about it, she felt it was more important that my DD continue drinking milk. What I did was manipulate the number of servings per day so I gradually eliminated the number of bottles she took... We cut out the day care bottle several months ago - maybe 6 months ago; her evening bottle 2 months ago and her morning bottle just 2 weeks ago like I said.

Now that she's off, I feel like I stressed over it for nothing.

Yay! I was hoping for a response like this. In all honesty, getting her off the bottle has not been in the forefront of my mind and it was only today that I realized--OMG--March 2--she's already 14 months old!!

So did you still send milk to the daycare with her wor did you cut that bottle out entirely?

Re: Daycare and Bottle Weaning (Very Resistant)

Honestly I thought daycare helped in this area since all the kids used sippies

I brought a sippy for DS and then i kept a bottle in his cubby in case he ever freaked out (he was attached to the bottle as well)

guess what?? he loved the sippies at school

His morning bottle at home was the hardest to take away. Literally he broke my heart crying for it. I made sure all bottles were out of sight and sternly said "if u want to drink here is the milk in the sippy"....he freaked out about 2 mornings and then started with the sippy

I thought DD being in daycare made the transition easier - they did it for me Chat Icon

I packed one bottle that they kept for "emergencies" and they used the sippys. She was resistant at first but when she got thirsty/hungry enough she took the sippy.

I think I went til 1.5 yrs with a bottle..and replaced one with a sippy cup at a time at least a week apart..and the last one was the one at night! I dont feel you have to rush "so early" in my opinion! I have no regrets and my DD transitioned smoothly

I had been giving DD the cup. But she still took milk from the bottle, same as you. When I got notice that she was moving up to the next room and they don't allow bottles, I had to stop her cold turkey. It worked.

Re: Daycare and Bottle Weaning (Very Resistant)

Abby is 18 months and only takes milk from a bottle if she is held. She will drink juice and water from a straw sippy cup. In day care, they hold her but they aren't supposed to. Im going to have to test my own will and see how much of her crying I can take.

Her pediatrician said that I should simply give her dairy elsewhere if she refuses her milk from a sippy OR to give her milk from a drink box like Quik or something like that OR to add chocolate to make it taste like something else in the sippy.

I cant answer your question but wanted to let you know DS was 18 months when I started and it was such an easy transition because I think he was ready.
