CVS Testing - Update #2

Update #2:

Got the FISH results - everything is fine and it's a GIRL!!!!

*******************************
Update:

So I went for the CVS yesterday at Madonna in Brightwaters.

I had it done vaginally since my placenta is posterior and it was super uncomfortable! Luckily it didn't take long...

Today I had (TMI!) a big glob of brown mucous with a little red and I kinda freaked. They said spotting might happen - but this was not what I was expecting! My OB happened to call to check in on me before I could call him and he said that was normal and as long as I am not bleeding heavily and/or cramping I shouldn't be worried. He did say that I should be off my feet for at least 48 hours after the procedure, which is very difficult with a 21 month old running around!

I am anxiously waiting for my results - They were doing FISH so I should know the preliminary stuff by tomorrow I would imagine. We also opted for the micro array testing since my insurance would cover it. Did anyone else have that done?

*********************************

Anyone have this done?

I am scheduled for it next Wednesday and am a little nervous. I know the doctor is highly trained in it - but for some reason I feel even more uneasy about it than I did when I had an amnio with my DD.

Can anyone share their experience? (Preferably a good experience! Chat Icon )

Thanks!

Re: CVS Testing

I had it done and was so nervous. But honestly it wasnt too bad. A bit painful and uncomfortable but well worth it. It only lasted less than a minute. Let me know if you have any questions. Where are you going??

Thanks for your reply!

I'm going to Madonna - Having it done in the Brightwaters Office by Dr. Bergman.

I saw the genetic counselor today and she mentioned that they might have to go in more than once of they don't get enough tissue the 1st try - that kinda freaks me out. I want them to be in and out on the 1st shot! Did you have it done vaginally or through the abdomen?

Re: CVS Testing

I was able to have it done through the abdomen. She was able to get a very large sample. It lasted a bit longer than normal she said because she was in a really good spot and wanted to make sure to get enough the first time. The prep took longer than the procedure.

Re: CVS Testing

I had it done at the end of August! The hardest part was the "not-knowing" and then the wait.

The actual procedure is fast, and I felt no pain at all. Just a pinch from the needle and then a little bit of jiggling it around to get the sample. Since my placenta was up front, it was done through the abdomen. No pain or issues afterwards either.

The results were priceless. I was told that I had a 94% change of a chromosomal abnormality because my baby had such a high nuchal translucency measurement, and everything came back perfectly normal. And we even found out the sex at 12 weeks. Chat Icon

Good Luck!

Re: CVS Testing

I had it done. So much anticipation and nerves for nothing IMO. The test was so not a big deal, and it is over so quickly-- the discomfort is so short that by the time you think it might be bothering you too much, it's over.

Really- so not a big deal. If I had to do it over again, I would in a heartbeat.

I did mine through the abdomen at Mt Sinai.

Re: CVS Testing - Update

I had a CVS done on my first pregnancy once we knew there were many issues and the baby would most likely not make it. They wanted to see if the issue with what happened during that pregnancy was due to a chromosomal issue as we had gone thru IVF to get pregnant and had 4 frozen embroys waiting. The FISH results were back withing just a few days (3-4 days at the very most). The rest of the results were back within about 10 days. At that point the asked if we wanted to have the micro-array done as our ins would pay for it as well. We opted for it and those results took a bit longer to get back. I want to say close to a month. However, it may have taken so long for the micro-array because they may not have rushed it as they knew that I had m/c by that point so it was not results that were needed for the current pregnancy.

Sending you lots of Chat Icon that your results come back quick and normal!! Chat Icon

You will have the quick test results very soon!! Don't worry! And 99% of the time, they are the same as the full panel.

As far as the micro array testing, they kept pushing me to do it after my CVS test results came back normal. We sat and spoke with a genetic counselor. In the end, we decided against the micro array analysis for a few reason, the first being that my insurance would NOT cover it and it was an expense we didn't want to take. Secondly, it just seemed like it wasn't a sure guarantee of anything, that basically something could be wrong and not show up, or there could be nothing wrong and an indicator come back saying there was! Too much uncertainty. But I'm with you, if my insurance did cover it, we would have definitely done it!
