Next week I have to go for CVS testing. Did anyone ever have one? Did it hurt? Did it hurt the baby? I'm a nervous wreck and it's comsuming me. Please help. TIA

Re: CVS Testing
I went in for the CVS, but due to the position of the two of the babies, the doctor told me that there was a strong possibility that she was not going to be able to get to one or two of them. Due to that possibility and the genetic counseling, we opted for the amniocentesis at 16 weeks. I had it done at NSUH by my high risk doctor.
I did a lot of research before going in for the genetic counseling and the testing. I drove myself crazy and my anxiety level was to the max. My advice is not to stress so much over it. Do the genetic counseling first and then decide from there. We did it because of a health condition DH has besides our age (he is 47 and I am 38). The key about the test is having it done by someone who has plenty of experience doing it. Make sure you ask the doctor who is doing the CVS, how many she / he do in a week/ month? When was the last time she / he did one? What is her / his success rate? Has he / she ever encountered any problems while performing one? How did she / he handled it?
Please feel free to FM is you have any other questions.

Re: CVS Testing
I had a CVS. "Hurt" isn't the right word. They insert a needle (either through the stomach or the vagina - depending on where the placenta is) and "scrape" off some cells of the placenta using the suction from the needle.
It's quick (I counted to 75ish - slow counts while I was deep breathing) and a bit uncomfortable, but not worse than the dentist. Afterwards felt similar to skinning your knee or burning the roof of your mouth, but just on your placenta and within one day it was gone. I even flew 36 hours after the test.
I highly recommend Dr Martin Chavez at Perinatal Associates. He is rated one of the best in CVS and his bedside manners are awesome. He takes his time, really explains things wonderfully and he treats you like a person.
My OB also recommended NSUH as well.
Please FM me, if you have any questions.

Listen, I did this with Dr. Kofinas. It wasn't painful, just uncomfortable...doesn't harm the baby and he's got some of the best stats in NY State, even the country. When I asked for miscarriage stats on him, I was told the rest of the country is 1%, he's far and away less than that. In fact, he told me he has done literally thousands of CVS and has NEVER lost a baby to it. Rest assured, you are in wonderful hands. And its over relatively quickly. The worst part is the anticipation of waiting for results, but you'll get some the next day...and depending on what you're testing for you'll get them back within a week.
Lots lf luck!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! You made me feel so much better, because I was so nervous about the miscarriage rate.
