Cursive in school

Why aren't kids taught this anymore?

I find it so odd.

Really?

So many people I know said their kids aren't learning it.

My niece who is 18 wasn't taught it.
I only found that out a few months ago.

Cursive in school

I never ever use it, so I don't mind that it's not taught.

Me either.
Other than my signature.
I find it so cumbersome and it's illegible when I try it.

Cursive in school

The kids are not mandated to use cursive in their homework/reports. They are mostly learning it for signature purposes and so they can read it. The kids enjoy it and it's a fun activity for them to learn. Honestly they most likely will not be using it as they get older since they will probably all be using tablets/laptops to write but I like it that they are learning it. DD also gets keyboarding lessons in third grade.

Re: Cursive in school

I'm not sure if schools teach it in my district, bc my oldest is in first. But I taught him how to write his name in cursive for a signature and I'm sure I'll continue with the rest of the letters. I'd rather the schools focus on things that matter, and easy things like cursive I can take over.

My DS learned cursive as well. They are only required to use it in school for certain projects or tests. He is in 5th grade.

I ONLY write in cursive, it's so much faster and prettier. I hate printing, it's so slow. I think it's ridiculous that some schools aren't teaching it anymore. There are plenty of things in every day life written in cursive and plenty of people who write in cursive as well. It's a skill that I still feel is essential and it doesn't take all that much effort to learn. Plus, most kids actually love learning it. My DD has been hounding me to teach her cursive since she was in Kindergarten, she's actually taught herself some of the letters from a cursive writing app on my iPad.

This is just one of those things that really irks me, I just don't agree with removing it from the curriculum. At all.

Cursive in school

We teach all the letters in 3rd grade. The are required to know how to make all the letters and form/read words. However they are not required to use it to take notes or test. They continue to practice in 4th and 5th but they basically just teach it so they know how to write their name.

Cursive in school

I always say that it's such a shame that it isn't regularly used any more. I've had to ask the HSstudents I teach to sign and write statements in cursive, they actually say, I don't know how. .!??!???

You will always have to sign your name, whether it be for a car, house, etc. I do not of understand why it is not taught. Chat Icon

I don't think that you have to use cursive for that to be your official signature.
You could draw a middle finger on all your documents as your signature, as long as it matches everywhere.

Re: Cursive in school

My DS is in 4th grade and hasn't learned it yet. But I know another 4th grade class in his school is doing it. So hopefully they'll at least learn the letters and how to sign their name at some point.
