Cursive in school
I never use it except for my signature so to me it's pointless.

Re: Cursive in school
I only write in cursive. It's just so fluid and easier than print. When I went to Kindergarten we weren't taught to print we were taught cursive. It was called the hemensport program. It was so ridiculous because we had to learn to read print and yet we were writing script. All through elementary I was only allowed to write in cursive. So my print is not great.i think kids should be taught how to write in cursive but at an older age.

Re: Cursive in school
DD is in second and we were told at back to school night that it would be taught this year. IMHO, it is an essential skill for more than just a signature. I can't imagine being a high school or college graduate and not being able to read my diploma because I wasn't taught cursive. I can't imagine going to DC and not being able to read the Constitution of the United States because I wasn't taught cursive. I can't imagine an entire generation of students being unable to study ancient writings because they weren't taught cursive. Think of the history that would be lost!!!!
To say it is pointless, or that students in the future will have no need is IMHO short sighted, and ignores what we (as a generation who can read and write in cursive) use it for.

I don't know, I think that's a little drastic...IMO only about 5 letters are significantly different in cursive vs. print. I'm sure it would still be readable.

Re: Cursive in school
I find it to be very important & think it's a shame if schools don't teach it anymore. Some kids today don't even know how to sign their name! My DH teaches kids who print their name as their signature! Everything is moving toward electronic, which is fine to some extent, but being able to write is important too. I find cursive to be so much easier for writing quickly than printing. If my kids' school doesn't teach it, I will definitely be teaching them!

Re: Cursive in school
Dd is in 3rd and is learning it. The first day of school she had to find her desk and the names were written in cursive. Dd taught herself how to write in script. But now it's part of the curriculum

Re: Cursive in school
I think it is a lost skill and needs to be taught. It is sad how many high school kids don't know who to write in cursive. Probably because everyone uses a computer to type reports, uses text messages.

Re: Cursive in school
I think it is necessary.
I use a mix of both, but I tend to lean toward more printed letters. It's just what I prefer.
As a teacher in Europe, when I have hand written essays (as an in-class exam), I have trouble reading them. Everything is in script, and some handwriting is messier than others. It slows me down, TBH. I wish I had paid more attention to it in school.
For this reason alone, I think it is necessary. They don't have to concentrate on it so much, but they need to at least learn it.

Speaking as a former teacher who taught 5th grade where half the class did NOT know script, they were completely unable to read what I wrote..............and I have VERY neat handwriting. I agree that it's not "drastically different" but it's different enough where if you were not taught it probably you won't be able to read it.
Technology is great but I still think we need to teach future generations basic writing skills so that (god forbid) they have to pick up a pen they aren't a bunch of incompetent writers. And don't even get me started on the what texting has done to our youth and their writing skills................you wouldn't believe the cr@p writing my 5th graders would hand in, filled with slang and texting shortcuts. I was embarrassed for them.

My niece is in 3rd grade and did not learn it.
You will always have to sign your name, whether it be for a car, house, etc. I do not of understand why it is not taught.
Actually, you won't have to sign your name. I was just commenting the other day that our CEO, and multiple Senior VPs 'sign' their name in print ......
I am sad that it's kind of a 'lost' thing - but it's not something I'd fight tooth and nail for my kids to be taught.

Re: Cursive in school
Funny when I went to visit my sister, she's a teacher, at school recently... we go to lunch together from time to time, I came in and she was just about done teaching a class. She teaches middle school. All the kids said hello, they are in 8th grade.
So, I forget what happened but my sister was in the back of the room and she said to me, "Oh! Just write on the white board that the project is due 9/29 and the reading fair is 9/30"... something like that.
I quickly, in cursive penmanship, wrote the info on the board. I looked, my sister laughed, and the class looked DUMBFOUNDED. Lost.
They couldn't read it.
And I have INSANELY neat handwriting. People ask all the time if I went to Catholic school. They say it looks like calligraphy --- so, it's not that.
They can't read cursive writing.
I was shocked. And it doesn't really matter if you are for it or not - whatever. I was just so surprised at that. And my sister was like, yeah none of them know how to read or write in that. She's like, I have to write in print all the time now. It's kind of sad!

Or a lot of documents lately are being signed via electronic signatures, verisign, etc
