Cough that won't stop!
Kind of long, so please bare with me...
My DS who is 3 years old has this cough for over two months now. It started right around when he started pre school and I thought it was a cold. Then one day he had a low grade fever so I took him to the pediatrician. The fever was low grade and only lasted one day. The dr said it was a cold and if he gets a fever again, bring him back in.
Another week goes by, coughing day and night. More at night. Obviously from a post nasal drip. I've been doing everything: humidifier in his room, Vicks rub on chest, feet and back and socks on the feet, saline spray with the nose sucker. The natural honey syrup... Nothing works.
I brought him back for a re check. They tell me after listening to his lungs with the stethoscope, he's wheezing so they say he should use the nebulizer for 10 days straight 4 times a day. It helps the cough. Not completely. Oh, he was also put on amoxicillin prior to the nebulizer treatments because they said he had a sinus infection... That also did absolutely nothing.
He's been off the nebulizer and in the past two days he's back to coughing a lot. Tonight my poor baby was coughing in his sleep every 20 seconds (I counted) :(
I talked to some RN friends and they and I agree it seems like allergies. So, I tried children's Zyrtec. I also tried Benedryl at night. They don't work!! If they were allergies, wouldn't those two allergy meds stop the coughing? Ugh, it's so frustrating seeing him go through this for so long. I am going to call a pediatric allergist on Monday and rule out any allergies and then I guess if the allergy tests come back negative, take him to a pulmonary doc.
We live in Florida now and he's never had allergy issues in NY. However, it could be possible he's picked up an allergy here...? I just want him to stop this coughing!!! I'm worried!

Re: Cough that won't stop!
Could be two different infections.... like one right after the other. The cough is always the last to go and can sometimes take over 3 weeks +.. so if it were two different colds, it could be that. It really sucks.. but hopefully he's coming to the end of it :(

Cough that won't stop!
If there's nothing coming up physically wrong, could it be something in the house? Maybe air conditioner/heating vents that need to be cleaned, mold in the house, something like that?

He did cough up some yellowish mucus yesterday... However, I did think of mold issues too.. Where we are now, renting until we decide where to buy, I called the maintenance company and had them send a central AC repair guy to do an assessment. He said the unit is very dirty and is going to propose a new unit be put in as well as cleaning out the air ducts. I asked him if there was evidence of mold, would he be able to tell once he cleans the air ducts and he said yes he would be able to tell.. He submitted the proposal to our maintenance company and once they approve it, I can have the guy come back here and start the process.
Our lease is up in March so if we did need to move if there is a mold issue, I'm definitely not going to renew and move else where , where I can know for sure there is no mold.. If that's even possible to find out in future rentals.. I really hope it's not mold but, I too am also having some sinus issues that I've never had before... :(

Re: Cough that won't stop!
I've gone through this recently with my 5 year old ' it turned out to be back to back sinus infections. Our ped recommended us to buy a air purifier & humidifer for the house to filter out the allergens. So far it's worked
Whenever my son had that cough though, we did delsym with Benadryl at night along with him humidifer & Vicks. Then during the day we were using mucinex. When his allergies act up, it's Zyrtec but the key to Zyrtec is to give at night

Re: Cough that won't stop!
DS gets this sometimes... It starts out as a small cold and he coughs for weeks. He coughs the worst in the morning and at night.
Good news: it goes away by itself. My ped was not concerned about it (no fever, no lethargy, goes to school, kid looks fine).
Humidifier doesn't work, but chest PT does. I put him on his tummy and pat his back (not too soft or hard). Makes him sleep better.
