We did it with both my children. We made paymentd for one year until it was paid off. It was totally worth it for us.

We banked for both of our girls. I think of it like an insurance. I think because it is evolving you never know what the benefits might one day be and you only have the opportunity to save it once. We also used CBR
This except I have 2 boys. Tissue wasn't offered when DS1 was born but was when DS2 was. However, we chose not to bank tissue. My OB strongly suggested banking the cord blood in 2013, although I did my own research back in 2009 and already knew we were doing it again. Great experience with CBR both times, expecially 1st (DS was early, we didn't have a kit, etc).
DH's mom has multiple myeloma (blood cancer) and we talked to her cancer specialist about banking in 2012 (we had banked with DS1 already) and he said it was a great thing and was banking his child's (his wife was pregnant).
In the grand scheme of things we spend lots of money on way less important things (like a vacation, toys , Great Wolf, etc) so spending it for cord banking was worth it for us. It was financially harder the 2nd time around but it was important enough to me to make it happen (we paid in 6 installments).

I couldn't justify the cost. So we didn't do it and I do not second guess that decision at all.

I did delayed cord clamping which is free. Instead of freezing and saving the stem cells I had it all pumped into the baby while I was holding her after delivery. That way all the good stuff is in her.
This is interesting but shouldn't be confused with being at all similar to cord blood banking. Cord blood banking is saving stem cells (cells that can differentiate into any type of cell in the body) which could potentially be used in the future to cure illness, help with regeneration, etc whereas delayed cord clamping just means that the baby is receiving extra blood from the placenta for a minute or so after birth. Not at all similar and one does not replace the other.

who did you speak to about getting it done t has at way?
Just speak to your doctor at your prenatal appointments. I wanted to do this (looked into banking but just didn't feel it was for us - also considered donating but they didn't do that at my hospital) but because I had c-sections, I wasn't able to.
It was part of my birth plan so my doctor knew ahead of time. BUT when I was pushing a new dr came in to start his shift and when I told him I wanted to do the delayed cord clamping he was so excited and says he does it all the time anyway.
It's not really a "procedure" instead of clamping the cord and cutting thus severing the tie between baby and mom I requested skin to skin and breast feeding rigt away. So dd was laying on me and breast feeding all the while the blood from her cord was being pumped into her body. During this time the dr delivered my placenta and stitched me, I had a little episiotomy.
After an hour was up he clamped the cord and took a long needle/syringe and sucked whatever was left on the clamped side and injected it into the side that was still going to her to ensure she got all that bloody goodness lol.
It wasn't painful and I cherish those first moments of holding her.

I totally understand the difference between the two. However I was offering the OP another option because the cord banking is expensive and when I was pregnant I did a lot of research on both ends.
What I decided for ME was that with cord banking if god forbid you need your cells it may not even be a match for the child but for a sibling instead. Also as others have stayed we have no real evidence of how long it can be stored and stays good for and if something were to happen there are people who donate so hopefully a match can be found.
I looked at it from the opposite end. Instead if saving it for when she may need it I decided to give it to her at birth in hopes these extra cells give her some sort of protection.
This is what I felt was best for us. Of course with a c section it isn't possible and also my friends baby was compromised and they needed to get him out ASAP so while it was part of her birth plan it didn't wind up happening.

We did, with viacord. We figured we waste so much money on silly things in life... if we need it we have it.. and if we never need it, thank god.. but why take that gamble.

I saved the cord blood for my ds. I also think of it as insurance. I want to know I have the option of using it if god forbid I did it. Hopefully I will be blessed with more children and I will do it with them also.

I did not do it for my girls, but did do it with DS. DD#2 has a chromosomal problem, so I thought that maybe, some day, DS's cord blood might be able to help her. And even if not, it will be there just in case for DS, or for DDs. Yes, it was expensive, but given DD's issue, I thought it was an expense I was willing to incur.
