cord blood banking question
Crashing from pregnancy board. How many of you did the cord blood banking? What are the benefits of having it?

I couldn't justify the cost. So we didn't do it and I do not second guess that decision at all.

I'm with Alli!
We didn't do it. My sister is an OB and she said she views it as a "pyramid scheme". She said that the list of diseases that is "cures" or "helps" are actually diseases that the cord blood "MIGHT" help or cure. There is no proven facts that is WILL help.
We donated our cord blood. It's free and if something happens (knock on wood) and it's still available we can use it if we need to.

I did cord blood and tissue. For us it was very important. Cancer runs in our family and if this can help gd forbid dd needs it we had to do it. Fm me if you want our contact at CBR.

We banked the cord blood back in 2008 when we had our DD but we decided not to with DS last year.
It's expensive up front and we figured that god forbid anything happened we have at least some banked cord blood if we need it or if it would help. Also, on top of all the other medical expenses we had OOP during my pregnancy and his birth, it was just too much of an added expense.

We banked for both of our girls. I think of it like an insurance. I think because it is evolving you never know what the benefits might one day be and you only have the opportunity to save it once. We also used CBR

This. Didn't do it for DD and not for this baby either. IMO, not enough research is done yet.

ITA agree with this
it "may" help but i have read a lot of things online (and spoke to my doctor) and was told when you do the banking they dont check the sample - they just store it. there are times that people do need it and when they go to use it the samples are found to be not usable...and many instances where it just wont work for what it is needed for.
because of the high cost, we couldnt justify the doing it knowing there is only a tiny chance you will be able to use it if you need it

I could not afford to put all that money into something that may or may not help my child in the future. There's a cost up front, and then a cost to store it as well...

We did. Honestly, we were in the process of looking into it when I went into labor prematurely. So at 32 weeks when I was delivering DD, we had to make a decision right then and there so we decided to do it.

How does the no charge one work? You donate the blood at birth but if you ever need it you have to wait for it to be available?

im pretty sure the no charge one is a donation - you donate your cord blood and they use it for anyone that needs it. it is not saved for you. but maybe some others who have looked into it more recently can clarify

I'd donate it but from what I hear, SB doesn't do that.

I banked it because I just felt it was the right thing to do for my family. God Forbid there ever was a health issue that my dd ran into and this could save her than to me that is priceless. I pray she will never need it. And financially we could afford it so why not. I get a bill once a year for it and its done. The biggest cost is the initial hit. After that its nothing.

I did delayed cord clamping which is free. Instead of freezing and saving the stem cells I had it all pumped into the baby while I was holding her after delivery. That way all the good stuff is in her.

I did not do it, I just felt after looking into it, that I did not think the stored cord blood would really be useful in 20+ years - that the materials themselves would degrade. I also felt (and feel) that the number of illnesses that it would treat were extremely low. I wanted to donate it, but the hospital I delivered at did not do that.

The no charge one is a donation as stated above.
When in L&D someone from the hospital (if it is available in that hospital) will come around and ask if you want to donate your cord blood (they had this at LIJ when I delivered in July). The cord blood will go into a bank and stored away until someone who matches it needs it. If they never use it and (G-d forbid) you end up needing it one day it will be offered to you.

same- did it for both kids but we used Maze which is based locally and has a one time fee- no yearly maintenance.

cord blood banking question
I have decided to donate the cord bold to the public registry. It can only be donated if your hospital participates in the program. It is free but it is for public use and can be used by anyone who is a match. I looked into private banking and did a ton of research and I could not justify keeping it private- there is a 0.04% chance that your baby will need it and in some cases the cord blood is not appropriate for treatment if needed. The samples are tested after collection and CBR will only charge you if the sample collected meets their standards. If you are considering banking give the different companies a call. I found both CBR and via cord to be very helpful. They sent me tons of research papers via email.

who did you speak to about getting it done t has at way?
Just speak to your doctor at your prenatal appointments. I wanted to do this (looked into banking but just didn't feel it was for us - also considered donating but they didn't do that at my hospital) but because I had c-sections, I wasn't able to.

We banked with Viacord. For us the price was worth the "what if". We said we would rather have it and not need it than wonder if it could help her should she be sick and need the cells.

I did it just in case we need it and I plan to do it with my next DC. I used Lifebank. They did do some kind of testing on the blood. I would use them again, but I'm planning to evaluate current prices and technology before I decide.
I probably could not do donation because of extended travel to the UK (also can't donate blood.)
