cooking vs baking

anyone else LOVE to cook and hate baking? I would cook at any moment, any day.... baking, no interest, its too slow for me!
(or vice versa... any bakers out there who don't like to cook?)

Re: cooking vs baking

I love to cook, hate to bake. I hate to bake for so many reasons
- measurements must be exact
- 1,000's of ingredients all have to come out onto the counter and they usually all make a mess (powders and things)
- the clean up is greater than cooking for me
- I have no patience to bake, let cool, then decorate - I just want it done! Chat Icon

I do it all the time and am good at it, but I do not enjoy it at all.

Cooking for me is theraputic. I will read a recipe online then go in the kitchen and cook it. I use my judgement, add a little this, omit that.... making soup (the art of chopping) is by far my favorite thing to make. I love to gather my fresh ingredients from the fridge and chop chop chop. Simmer and adjust seasonings. I clean while I cook so that by the time it's done, I have bare minumum to clean.

Re: cooking vs baking

I cook because I have to, I LOVE to bake. I get enjoyment out of the finished baked product and bringing it to someone's house and seeing them get happy over it and watching them enjoying it as they eat it

Re: cooking vs baking

I am a MUCH better cook than I am a baker. I only bake once a year, Christmas time, with my mom. The rest of the year, the baking is left up to everyone else.

I like both. I don't like to bake cakes though, neither DH or I are cake fans. I like to bake pies, breads and cookies.

Same here! I love baking!! I don't mind cooking, but usually I'm too lazy to cook until I'm really hungry and then I'm impatient for it to be done.

Re: cooking vs baking

I'm more of a cooker. LOVE cooking. I want to get into baking more, and I do bake sometimes, but definitely better at cooking.

I agree with what the other poster said...with baking it's so messy. I dont have the patience sometimes, and you have to be EXACT! Cooking, I throw a little of this, a little of that, and make the recipe my own.

I want to get into baking more and I'm going to bake different cookies Sat to bring to DH's uncle's Sunday.

Re: cooking vs baking

I love cooking because I just feel so much more ability to change things and modify and get creative. i find baking to be a very stringent art and I don't work as well in that medium.

Re: cooking vs baking

I love to do both.. but I am more proud of my baked goods than my cooked goods.. I think cooking is relatively simple and its an art.. each person is perfectly capable of making a wonderful dish with their own twist and turn.. but baking is a science, so more thought, more effort.. atleast to me.. I am a much better baker than I am a cook....my husband asked for steak when we first got married, and I said, I have no problem making you a cake that looks like a steakChat Icon

I never thought I could cook until recently. I just have to build up my confidence, and I have to follow directions to the T....I look at them like a hundred times!

Re: cooking vs baking

I love to cook but not so much bake. It is not that I dont enjoy the process of baking. I just don't llike all these baked goodies lying around the house eying me all day. So when I do bake, I bake healthy lowfat, whole wheat, multigrain etc. Atleast I feel better if leftovers lie around. Overall anything that calls for a stick of butter or more will not be baked in my house.

I love to bake. I really don't know how to cook that well, so I don't really enjoy it like I want to.

Re: cooking vs baking

my aunt is like that. she hates baking, i think my mother secretly does too and that's why she always pawns the baking off on me. i don't care, i love to do everything.

Re: cooking vs baking

it's weird because i think i've changed in the past year... i used to LOVE to bake but then when I started to cook more, I now prefer it. I like to make a nice special meal on Sundays and invite my parents over to eat. I do enjoy baking too, but just find myself liking cooking more. For instance on thanksgiving I cooked 10 different things and then just took the easy way out on desserts (mrs. smiths pies and cake and cookies from bj's!)

Re: cooking vs baking

I love to cook. I don't mind baking once in awhile, like around the holidays or if I have free time on a weekend. But I don't bake a lot. i'd much rather cook. DH loves to bake. I think it has to do with him needing a recipe and following exact instructions. I like to be able to use a recipe as a guide and change it how I please.

I'm more into cooking, but I love eating baked goods. There's a saying that cooking is an art and baking is a science. I think that's why I like cooking more- it's more forgiving when you screw up Chat Icon
