Class mom email
The class mom emailed the moms the beginning of the year to introduce herself and requested money from everyone that will be put in the class "party" fund. She said the money will all be used for the parties the class has through the year. So, I sent in my money and that was it.
Earlier this month we get an email asking if we'd like to contribute to the class gift for the two teachers, but it's totally optional. No problem. Sent in my money to the class mom with DS. It's not a lot and I have something for them in addition to the class gift we are contributing to. So, the other day we get another email reminding us the money for the class gift is due this week. She only received from 6 kids (there are 20 in the class) and if we are not contributing to the class gift then to please send in food for the class party this Friday. SHe then gave us a list. I have no problem with that, but then again didn't we already pay for the food for the party? It's also optional to contribute for the gift. Just thought it was odd and another mom I'm friends with thought it was wrong to ask.

Just asking how other classes are like. I'm usually not one to start drama threads, but wondering if it is odd. I was the class mom when DS was in preschool, but preschool is a bit different then kindergarten. Much bigger class and more politics. As you see when it comes to my kid's schools I have no issue doing whatever for the class. Just got the idea from the other moms it was weird to ask and didn't think about it much since I already contributed. Once I reread it I did think it wasn't right.

Re: Class mom email
Yeah if you sent in money at the beginning of the year for parites, that money should be used for food for the holiday party. Sounds shady.
My DD is still in a daycare based Pre K program so we don't have class moms, etc but I would prefer to just buy the teacher a gift on my own and that's it. I don't like other people begging me for money. I'm not into the whole class mom thing. I like to be left alone to do what want. I was never a good team participator.

Class mom email
I think the reminder for collection was okay- I mean, some parents forget or miss the 1st email and need a reminder. I would be annoyed about the party- if you already sent in money in September- it's only December- they should still have funds to cover tha prty- unless some parents didn't send in anything for that either?

I've been class mom a couple of times. Unfortunately not everyone send in money for parties. I usually end up spending money out of pocket for a lot of things. She may not have gotten good response on the money for the parties so she is just sending it out thinking maybe those who didn't send in money would contribute somehow.

Re: Class mom email
We donate at the beginning of the year for parties, but there is always a list to donate for food and paper goods for each party. There are other items the class moms purchase, for crafts, etc.
Since probably not everyone contributes I wouldn't think the $10 I give at the beginning of the year would cover all expenses for all the parties.

Re: Class mom email
Thanks for the responses and makes sense if she didn't get all the money for the parties. Also, I had no issue for the reminder of the parents who may want to contribute, but forgot.
The email in Sept was for $15 to cover three parties they'll have. Hanukkah/Xmas party, Valentines and end of year. I do know class moms usually spend more too. I have done that as well and I have a friend who goes nuts when it comes to class parties with games and make your own edible stuff. It's cute.

Class mom email
I am class mom and we use the money collected in the beginning of the year for all parties and gifts. We are not allowed to solicit any additional money for anything. I have "donated" a few things to the class parties and have not taken the money out of the fund - but for the most part if I or any of the other 2 class moms spend money on a craft or good or supplies for a party we keep the receipts and take the money from the fund.

Re: Class mom email
Maybe she is getting a really low response from the parents and she figures if she keeps asking she will get some additional money. You may be surprised at how many don't contribute to these things.

Re: Class mom email
That does sound odd to me, but I probably wouldn't question her about it.
On a side note, I wish this idea of a "class gift" would just go away already. Yes, I know I sound like Scrooge, but I prefer to buy my own gift. As a former teacher, I always found it awkward to send thank you cards to families who didn't contribute...I never knew who contributed and who didn't because the card was signed "From the Class".

I was never going to say anything to her. I contributed to everything she asked for already. Just figured I'd ask what most do. I like to be involved. On the gift part... ITA. I never know if or when they'll ask for a class gift. I bought something for the teachers and the next day got the email about getting a "class" gift. I feel like I don't want to be the only one off the list if I'm the only one who choses not to contribute. Plus, it's not a ton of money. I was class mom last year, but there were only 6 kids in the class and I was pretty friendly with the other moms.

Re: Class mom email
It doesn't sound odd to me at all. I've been teaching for 17 years and the "party fund" money doesn't stretch very far. The class moms usually ask for donations of food and/or craft supplies to help stretch the budget till June.

Re: Class mom email
You all pay for parties? We give money for teacher gifts at back to school night which is for the holiday and end of the year gift.
Then we do a lottery at back to school and you pick items to bring (I.e. Holiday treat, bottled water, pretzels) when your name is chosen. We go through the class until every spot is filled. The lottery includes class trips, holiday party food and crafts. If crafts are done either the teacher picks and donates the items or more often the 5-6 parents pick the craft and buy it and split the cost.

Class mom email
It might be that she's using the money that she collected for parties for crafts and activities for the students to do during the parties. When I was teaching, I had a class mom once that was really into making the parties special for the kids and she threw a party for every holiday. From what I remember, some moms sent in some food for parties.

Re: Class mom email
Honestly - I don't even remember what I gave money for or what I signed up for - the first few weeks of school there were 500 letters asking for $$ and to sign up to contributie to parties etc. 10 months in advance ...... Our class moms don't communicate much - Yours sounds a little unorganized

Re: Class mom email
As a class mom, I do not agree with what that class mom is doing. I ask for money for the holiday and ask that everyone contribute something for the class parties. No one has had an issue with that (that I'm aware of). I've also had class moms ask for money once and use that for gifts. And we have send stuff in for parties, no problen with that either

Class mom email
I am a room mom and I have only collected money for the teacher Christmas gifts. I will most likely collect 1 more time for end of the year gifts. The letter I send ALWAYS say it’s optional.
If our class is having a party ( thanksgiving, Christmas, etc) We have a sign up sheet for items that are needed. ( cups, napkins, pretzels etc) So the parents sign up for what they wanna bring in. I haven’t had a problem doing it this way.

We send in money at the beginning of the year for parties too but we are also asked to bring something in. For example, this year for the holiday party they did a brunch. The class mom paid for the bagels and juice boxes and parents were asked to bring in other things, like cookies, munchkins, muffins. Some families do not contribute to the class gift or class fund so the money doesn't go too far.

That is what I did last year when I was in charge of the collection. But this year the mom organizing the gift has sent updates to everyone because I contributed and still got emails afterwards.

in our school they only asked for a holiday teacher collection... the parties during the year the parents sign up to bring something in, either the food, or the tableclothes, or papergoods, or token gift item.
I am guessing the mother must have a list of who contributed, but is easier to just send a reminder to all, instead of pulling out email addresses.

Class mom email
I am class mom this year and the parents were asked for $10 at the beginning of the year for parties. This money does not go very far with the amount of parties they have. Food, craft, goodies. We also use the money to get the kids a small Christmas gift and an end of the year gift, so these things use a bulk of the money . So in our class, we definitely need to ask for food donation help for the parties, and also asked for $10 for the teachers holiday gifts. All of this is optional. $200 or so dollars collected at the beginning of the year doesn't go far and I definitely spend money out of pocket.

Re: Class mom email
I'm a class mom, and at our school parents aren't allowed to give gifts individually. I send out one email, use what I receive and round up out of pocket so its a nice number, sign from every kid and move on with my life. I would never ask twice because I don't know what anyone's personal financial situation is and I would hate to make someone having tough times feel bad. Nor would I want their child to feel excluded because of problems outside their control.

Class mom email
Our class mom does not collect $$ for parties. The class gets asked for donations of items needed @ 1 week in advance of the event. Collections are made in December and in May for holiday and end of the year gifts for teachers.
