Claiming IVF on taxes
Has anyone claimed IVF or any infertility expenses on their taxes? I plan on doing so this year. To date I spent apprx $24K+ OOP. I hope I can get some of it back incase I need to do another fresh cycle.
I have copies of all my receipts for my accountant. Will he also need copies of the checks too?

Yes, i did twice. You can only claim a certain percentage of the $. You can look on the IRS website but I believe its anything above 7.5% of your income. Good luck!!!

It's over 7.5% of your gross adjusted income. And if you hit that mark , you can also include mileage for any/all medical appts. And you can decut all other medical expenses so other co-pays, meds, etc. We were able to this twice when we did 2 IVF's OOP in 2 different years.

YES! We did this in 2008 when we conceived our first DS via IVF / ICSI. My accountant wasn't sure, we did our own research and found that you can and wound up getting an $8k refund!!!

They are still figuring out the tax law changes right now. There was a chance the threshold could rise to 10% but for years it has always been 7.5%. It's for any and all qualified medical expenses that you pay out of pocket, not just IVF. So if you are close to the threshold just for IVF you can also add OOP medical items for regular doctors visits.
It works that you are responsible for the first 7.5% of med expenses and anything over that can be written off on your schedule A if you itemize. So if your adjusted gross income was 100,000, and you had 15,000 in med expenses, anything after the first 7,500 could be written off as a deduction. (So in this case, the remaining 7500)
