Claiming on Taxes question
Can I call my doctors office to get a copy of how much I paid this year for IVF? We paid out of pocket since my insurance did not cover anything except some meds. Im curious how I go about claiming it on my taxes. I did read about how if we paid more then a certain percent of our income we get some money back. Did anyone have to do this last year? Thanks I did read on one post that someone claimed acupuncture costs too.

Re: Claiming on Taxes question
I tried to claim all my oop costs but my accountant said that it wouldn't make a difference. I forget the rules but it didn't get us back any money. Totally sucks because the amount of money we spent is literally someone's salary.

Re: Claiming on Taxes question
I am not an accountant, but in NJ I think non reimbursed medical expenses over 2.5% of income are deductible if you itemize. I think it is 7 something percent for federal. I am not sure what % NY has. HTH - If you are in NJ I would talk with an accountant about it.

Re: Claiming on Taxes question
I think its something like 7.5% of net income.
You can call up your doctors office (i have) and ask for a break down, also your meds and traveling expenses. It ALL counts towards it. Get a final # and ask your accountant.

Also, don't forget to include many OTC meds----including pregnancy tests! (When I used to buy like 10 every month and DH would get mad at me, I'd just tell him it was a tax write-off. ) Mileage to and from dr's appts also counts, paying for parking, MANY THINGS!
Here's a link to the info on the IRS website: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf

Re: Claiming on Taxes question
My last IVF cycle was $28K...yes, 28,000!!!
I claimed the whole amount as a medical expense. If it is more as your standard deduction it works....if not then don't even bother claiming it.
Standard deduction (married filing together) is $11,600. Single is $5,600. If your expenses exceed those numbers, then you can claim it....

Did that amount include the meds?

Re: Claiming on Taxes question
Thanks everyone. I know I took something from Dr. B's office that I have at home that explains it. We have paid out of pocket since our IVF's were not covered at all by insurance. I will call the office tomorrow and see if they can fax over something over. I did save all my credit card slips that have how much I paid. I didn't think of over the counter and travel expenses to the city and his office.

Re: Claiming on Taxes question
any out of pocket expenses for doctors, copays, meds, dentist, etc. can be calimed in your itemized deductions. The total amount should be greater than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. (you can do a search on the IRS website for Schedule A instructions for examples of all of the medical expenses that can be deducted).

Is it 7% of income or 11,600? Anyone know for sure?

It's anything over 7.5% of your income.
