Christening- Private vs. Group?
I'm new to my neighborhood and the only Catholic church nearby only allows Christenings twice a month. So it would be a group thing and we'd be limited on the dates. I've only ever been to a private Christening and I'm kind of turned off at the idea of it being a group affair. Is this pretty typical? I could probably have it in Queens where I used to live and have it private, but then we'd have the party out there and we were kind of hoping to have it closer to home. Not sure what to do- any advice?

Both of my kids' christenings were group christenings. I had no problem with it. For my DS there was 1 other baby being baptized, and for my DD there were maybe 6 other babies. The priest will ask the families to come up one at at time to baptize their baby.

I have done all of my kids private - I prefer it that way. There is nothing wrong with the other way either - sometimes there may not be any kids or only 1 or 2 more. You never know. Could you ask the priest who would do it privately in your old parish to do the service at your new parish. We have a family friend that is a priest do ours.

Hmmm I wonder if the new church would allow that- the priest would definitely do it though. I'll have to ask. I just would prefer if it was just us. I'm just imagining screaming babies for 2 hours while we get through all their ceremonies.

Was it very long? I feel like the baptismal ceremony is pretty lengthy and to sit through 6 of them....

Christening- Private vs. Group?
My kids both had group christenings. For DS 1 - I think it was 8 or 10 babies and for DS 2 it was 6 (most of which we knew already - one is now one of DS's best buddies).
I think it took about an hour each time. Which allowed for pictures with the priest and all.

Re: Christening- Private vs. Group?
We had a group christening for my DD. I want to say there were 8 babies or so in total. It probably lasted about an hour, a little less. Everything was done in a very orderly fashion, each part was broken down so that each family got their own turn at every step. It was very nice to share such a happy occasion with other families.

Ours was supposed to be a group, and DS ended up being the only one. The past 2 we've been to, only had max of 2 or 3 babies.

They do the readings all together, individually each family going up only take a minute or two. It's not long at all.

I'm surprised! I mean I figured they did all the readings together but at the private christenings I've been to the families are up at the baptismal font for like 10 minutes. I just thought it would be so long.
What about pictures? Could I have a photographer come to capture the day even at a group christening?

Christening- Private vs. Group?
My church only offers group christenings. Same thing with my sister's and my brother's church. I would say most of them were done in less than an hour. I think group setting is more of the norm now. The reasoning is that we are welcoming them into the church community so more community members should be part of it.

Our church does group christenings too. DD was baptized with 2 other babies. The whole ceremony was only about an hour. Each family was invited up to take pictures on the altar with the priest at the end.

Groups christenings are pretty common and I think the norm. My son was a private christening only because no one else was booked that day.

OUrs are groups christening as well.... With Hailey it really wasnt long at all. Pretty much the same as everyone else that has mentioned it... They allowed people time after it was over if they wanted a ton of pics and all that.

Gotcha! I didn't realize it was more the norm now. It does make sense like a pp mentioned that they are being welcomed into the congregation. Now I just have to see if the dates work for us!

We did the group thing for DD1. I think they will do up to 4 at a time. For DD2, the group dates didn't work for us and we scheduled a private ceremony. They were fine with doing it as long as the church was available.

My sister has done the group ones. Even with 6 or so families... It lasted less than an hour. Maybe 15-20 people per family would attend. The readings were done communally & the babies came dressed (versus our baptisms where we have babies in a different outfit & dress them after they are baptized in white).
Yes, people had photography arranged.

Re: Christening- Private vs. Group?
We just did DD's- it was private and also in Queens! I didn't want to do a group one so I called my old church where I went to school and we had a lovely private ceremony. We also had the party in Queens because it didn't make sense to come back out here.
Sounds like you're in the exact same situation- I was very happy with our decision. I loved the fact that she was baptized in the same church I made all my sacraments in. Her godmother is my best friend from elementary school so now I have pictures of us from our communion, confirmation, graduation and now with my daughter in front of the same church
