Re: Cho Seung-Hui question

It seems like he never really got out of the 8th grade. His "writing" that is being reported is just a joke. It looks like an 8th grader wrote it. His video sounds like he nevr got out of the teenage angst. I think he was troubled and mentally ill.

In some other countries, they have institutions and that is how they take care of the mentally ill population. In the nineties, our brilliant gov decided to shut down a lot of institutions because it was too costly. Chat Icon

Yep! Although the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill was initiated due to the abuse of mentally ill and the deplorable conditions of the institutions, what ended up happening is that there are huge amounts of mentally ill patients who are unable to be compliant with their treatment due to their mental illness on the street and in prisons. The significant budget cuts to mental health does not allow for these patients to get the intensive supervision and follow-up that they require. In addition, insurance companies won't pay for extended services. I have patients who make serious suicide attempts and the insurance company gives them 2 days of treatment and then I have to call back after that time and keep trying to get more, but if the patient gets a little better, but from my perspective not good enought, they won't approve it. It makes no sense!

Mental Health needs significantly more funding and we need to find a middle ground between patient's rights and the public's rights.

Oh, and in response to the original question...I think it was a combination of things because most mentally ill patients don't murder 32 people! He clearly was ill, but not having the social supports and the ability to reach out for help contributed. I believe that we are all born basically good but throughout our lives things can go wrong that build up cause people to do evil things. even if he was a sociopath...that is still a mental illness.

Just my 85 cents!

What does the Iraq war have to do with the shootings at VT? Chat Icon Two separate issues, IMHO.

Re: Cho Seung-Hui question

After hearing part of his rant....a little bit of evil and mental illness.

As some said before you cannot kill 32 people and not be a little bit evil. The fact that he started, took 2 hours to reload and send a package to NBC detailing what he did...says evil to me!Chat Icon

I do believe he was mentally ill, but I believe in the devil and I'm sure he had his hand in there! You could see it in his face. Pure evil!

Re: Cho Seung-Hui question

There definitely needs to be more funding for mental health. What we have in our society today is obviously not sufficient.

Re: Cho Seung-Hui question

The reason why I mentioned about the weapons and the war was because our government seems to feel the war is more important than some of the other problems our countries faces, like the mental health problem.

Re: Cho Seung-Hui question

i think its obvious he was "evil" from the act that he committed, and also mentally ill....
but i am wondering what made him this way-
a lot of serial killers/mass murderers were abused as children...
i wonder what his childhood was like- not much was revealed about his parents except they owned a dry cleaner.

Re: Cho Seung-Hui question

I work in mental health with children and adults who are severely emotionally disturbed. The word "severely" does not always mean that they will all be bad or do bad things. Some simply cannot cope in what we consider the "real" or "normal" world.

I have had discussions with various people who serve in my agency as supervisors, psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. We ponder whether or not people (whether mentally ill or not) can simply be inherently evil. There are normal functioning people on the street with mean streaks, spitefulness, vindictiveness and hatred who are not clinically mentally ill. There are children and adults in my agency who are happy as clams and would never harm a fly, but are so mentally ill that they need to be in a clinical setting for the rest of their lives.

It is apparent to me that Cho Seung-Hui was one who slipped through the cracks. Not every mentally ill person is evil, but I think this one was. He suffered a tortured existence (in his mind) and never had the coping skills or the treatment necessary that led him to what he did last week. Some mentally ill people are pre-disposed to evil. Cho was one of them.

I think that it is very hard for people to understand that others can be bad and are very quick to slap labels on those who do bad things in order to justify their actions. Not everyone who commits crimes are mentally ill, or every murderer in history would have gotten off on "temporary insanity."
